Tasted by acyso on 7/10/2022 & rated 98 points: Heaters (Chicago, IL): One of the best bottles of syrah that I've ever had. An absolute smokeshow, both literally and metaphorically. It smells distinctly like the bark of a brisket with its mix of herbs and smoke. There's black fruit as well underneath it, as well as the savoury, saline elements that you would expect from a bottle of syrah made by someone who knows how to make syrah. On the palate, this is fully resolved and mature, and like the nose you get many of the same smoke and saline elements. The fruit, while dried at this point, provides a bit of sweetness to counterbalance the acidity. Silky tannins and a long finish that evokes a summer barbecue. Magnificent. (2096 views)
Tasted by Chimer on 10/11/2018 & rated 95 points: Part of a mini vertical courtesy of a very generous host who purchased these on release and has cellared them in ideal conditions.

Huge colour with the most wonderful depth of silky fruit, the integration of fruit, tannins and ripe acidity is super. Beautifully balanced with fabulous length but the weight of tannin is immense and gives a slightly dry note to the finish, if this had been served as a stand alone wine it would have completely seduced us... but we had the 1990 to follow (1813 views)
Tasted by Hodby on 11/19/2014 & rated 95 points: Medium-dark garnet-red, some faintness at edge, bricked there. Powerfully aromatic wine right from the get-go, with a bit of everything and wholly correct: huge mixed garrigue, wood fire smoke, menthol, tar, game-y meat (pork roast ?), plum, roasted or burned fruit skins. On arrival, firm, fine tannin and balanced acidity. The flavors echo everything from the nose, very complex, and the fruit is a stronger element here than expected. Finishes clean, giving a sustained sensation of tannin melting away and flavors emerging. Dynamite ! Bottle #6 of six. (4235 views)
Tasted by Hodby on 3/26/2013 & rated 96 points: Medium red-garnet color, some bricking. Stunning aromas: floral and savory with black pepper, violet, old cigar box, mixed mints, Missouri bbq pit, cider, plum. On entry, a bracing wave of acid, tannin, fruit and bacon. menthol. Development superb in the mouth, simply gets better and better with each sip. Finishes long, extremely complex, teasing, such mid-life perfection for 20y+ Cote Rotie; an under-regarded vintage on release. Bottle #5 of six. (4750 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 7/7/2011: Dark red. Menthol upfront then tons of red fruit, meat, blood, iron and pepper. Meat and pepper flavours and a rich long finish. Outstanding. (5178 views)
Tasted by godx on 7/2/2011 & rated 94 points: Jeff Leve Rhone Offline (Vancouver, BC): Medium red in colour, showing some bricking at the rim. This has a gorgeous and fully developed nose of barnyard, sweeter red fruits and funk with gamey and floral notes too. Very complex. In the mouth it’s got a pure entry with a silky and supple mouth feel and sweet and resolved tannins. Meaty and red fruits flavours with smoke and olive tapenade coming through on the long and smooth finish. My WOTN. Outstanding. (5601 views)
Tasted by jpijg on 6/4/2011 & rated 95 points: Nose is expressive and very floral : rose, violet, with hints of tobacco and autumn forest. In the mouth the wine is powerful, with good concentrtaion, but tanins have been rounded by time. Rose, violet blends beautfully with kirsh, tobacco. Minerality, hints if smoke and autumn forest add complexity and balance.
Wine was decanted for ~ 1 hour, which was about right. (4498 views)
Tasted by IAMVLAD on 3/10/2011 & rated 89 points: missing the black [white?] pepper component that i associate with cote rotie. reluctant nose. (2282 views)
Tasted by LeatherPalate on 8/5/2009 & rated 92 points: Aged Rhones with the bad boys (Bistro Champagne Lincoln Square Chitown): Poopy diaper nose with lard.
Not a full as the Verset on the front end but comes in with a really nice finish.
Raspberries,tar, and lavendar.
This came after the Verset and may have been lost in the shuffle for me. Would like to spend a couple hours with this beauty. (2747 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 8/1/2009 & rated 93 points: Northern Rhones 90 and Older (Bistro Campagne, chicago IL): nose: extremely funky that is loaded with tones of bacon fat, black cherries, dark floral tones, and some tones of manure. Wonderful depth and balance that can only come from the northern rhone

taste: wonderful and medium/full bodied with melded tones of bacon fat, black cherries, raspberries, and dark floral tones with a tinge of spice tones and bits of lavender. Very classy tones that are extremely balanced

overall: drinking beautifully and is certainly not for fruit forward fans at all. This is pure aged northern rhone through and through in all its beauty. Was great on pop n pour, but certainly emerged more in the glass and added a satin quality to it (2766 views)
Tasted by wineamateur on 4/27/2007 & rated 92 points: Dark hued with a touch of ageing. Sweet lavender with tar and cough syrup on the nose. Clean and fresh. Some liver and blood aromas. Sweet and mouthfilling, with lively acidity and a beautiful lightness of touch and poise. Splendid. (2573 views)
Tasted by MicklethePickle on 2/29/1992 & rated 91 points: Tasted at Singer & Foy survey of new Rhones. Extremely deep, dark ruby color. Darkest so far. Excellent nose, too. Some bacon fat and those kinds of aromas. Nice, complex. A tad green. The palate is very fine. Definitely has the bacony elements I admire in these wines. 5-12-16-8: 91/100 (338 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

Côte-Rôtie

Guide to Cote Rotie - Read about the Northern Rhone Valley

• The Appellation cover three communes - Saint-Cyr-sur-Rhône, Ampuis and Tupin-Semons - on the right Rhône river bank, within the Rhône "département".

• Soils : In the northern part of the vineyard, the Côte Brune, consists of extremely steep, terraced slopes of ferruginous mica schists which are covered with schist sand (arzel). The Côte Blonde has a varied geology with gneiss and granite predominating at the most southern side of the appellation.

• Climate : tempered continental. Dry, hot summers and frequent rainfalls during the other seasons. History : one of the oldest vineyards in France, first developed by the Romans. It is said that during the Middle Ages, "The Seigneur de Maugiron" bequeathed a hillside to each of his daughters, one was brunette and the other fair. Thus, were born the names of "Côte Brune" and "Côte Blonde".

• Area planted : 230 hectares (568 acres), for an annual production of 8,400 hectoliters (93,333 cases). Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2,3 US tons/acre).

• Grape Varieties : Syrah (80% minimum). An addition of up to 20% of Viognier grapes in the crop is allowed.
