  • Heaters (Chicago, IL): One of the best bottles of syrah that I've ever had. An absolute smokeshow, both literally and metaphorically. It smells distinctly like the bark of a brisket with its mix of herbs and smoke. There's black fruit as well underneath it, as well as the savoury, saline elements that you would expect from a bottle of syrah made by someone who knows how to make syrah. On the palate, this is fully resolved and mature, and like the nose you get many of the same smoke and saline elements. The fruit, while dried at this point, provides a bit of sweetness to counterbalance the acidity. Silky tannins and a long finish that evokes a summer barbecue. Magnificent.

  • Part of a mini vertical courtesy of a very generous host who purchased these on release and has cellared them in ideal conditions.

Huge colour with the most wonderful depth of silky fruit, the integration of fruit, tannins and ripe acidity is super. Beautifully balanced with fabulous length but the weight of tannin is immense and gives a slightly dry note to the finish, if this had been served as a stand alone wine it would have completely seduced us... but we had the 1990 to follow

  • Medium-dark garnet-red, some faintness at edge, bricked there. Powerfully aromatic wine right from the get-go, with a bit of everything and wholly correct: huge mixed garrigue, wood fire smoke, menthol, tar, game-y meat (pork roast ?), plum, roasted or burned fruit skins. On arrival, firm, fine tannin and balanced acidity. The flavors echo everything from the nose, very complex, and the fruit is a stronger element here than expected. Finishes clean, giving a sustained sensation of tannin melting away and flavors emerging. Dynamite ! Bottle #6 of six.

  • Medium red-garnet color, some bricking. Stunning aromas: floral and savory with black pepper, violet, old cigar box, mixed mints, Missouri bbq pit, cider, plum. On entry, a bracing wave of acid, tannin, fruit and bacon. menthol. Development superb in the mouth, simply gets better and better with each sip. Finishes long, extremely complex, teasing, such mid-life perfection for 20y+ Cote Rotie; an under-regarded vintage on release. Bottle #5 of six.

  • Dark red. Menthol upfront then tons of red fruit, meat, blood, iron and pepper. Meat and pepper flavours and a rich long finish. Outstanding.
