Community Tasting Notes (average 89.6 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 33 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Brolawa on 1/11/2024: M4. CDT tasting at 84 Yesler. Beautiful wine with deep nose of wood and spice. Palate backs it up. (393 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 10/10/2021 & rated 90 points: Dom Pérignon / Vosne-Romanée Tasting-cum-Lunch (Restaurant Slagerij De Beurs, Amsterdam, NL): Second bottle from a full case. Lacks charm. Neither here nor there. Spicy, ripe fruit, not really disjointed but not really together either, quite tannic, drying finish. (2867 views)
Tasted by aChave on 4/24/2021 & rated 91 points: Lovely villlsge wine. Clear red with just a lighter edge. Medium red fruit with dark undertones. Eminently balanced with medium length and weight. Dry roses on the nose. In the heart of its drinking window. Excellent. Opened 3 hours ahead with a 75 minute decant. (2386 views)
Tasted by Fletch0007 on 1/29/2021 & rated 90 points: First bottle from en primeur case. Brick red to orange at the rim - looking mature. Floral nose of rose and violets, some blackberry fruit too. Medium bodied, still firm, fruit slightly lacking. Villages bottling so temper your expectations: I think this is very much ready for business and limited upside from holding further. (2595 views)
 Tasted by rhapsody5435 on 6/10/2020 & rated 90 points: 开瓶出来酒塞还算比较干净,浸塞也才1/3,但是酒色偏砖红了,让人担心已老去。醒酒一段时间(大约20分钟)后,透出熟樱桃和番茄的混合味,带有VR村的典型香料。虽然酒标是13度,但是感觉酒精并没有隐藏得很完美,稍有灼热感。可能由于热年酸度还是欠了点,稍显厚重了。这瓶酒属于已经成熟,不认为再放还有很大提升。 (3134 views)
Tasted by ES Oslo on 4/23/2020 & rated 90 points: Nice and balanced. Fully mature and open. Could last a few more years. Nice earthy, strawberry and sweet cherry on the palate. (3108 views)
Tasted by rwpalmer on 4/21/2020 & rated 90 points: I am so happy to have at last had an iteration of this wine that wasn't mean. Fine yes, but with fine Vosne elegance and maybe the merest hint of sweetness. Enough fruit to believe that this could still have an upside. (1960 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 7/6/2019 & rated 90 points: First bottle from a full case purchased en primeur from a reputable merchant. Attractive nose, open and ready for business, minerally and fresh, primary fruit and some tertiary development, with a modicum of Vosne spice box; medium bodied palate, silky attack, firm structure, lacks a certain 2009 generosity; tight and drying finish, but length is very good. Best with food - it accompanied spicy sausage ragù tonight, but I am not blown away. (2508 views)
Tasted by Duncan H on 3/17/2019 & rated 90 points: Light red with a few darker red patches. Very faded and orange at rim. Intense nose of strawberry and perfume. Quite soft on the palate and not at all edgy - well-balanced, supple and long. Delicious! And even better on day 2. (2091 views)
Tasted by strickt01 on 12/29/2018 & rated 84 points: Bottle 10 of 12 from a case and no less disappointing than those that have preceded it. Absolutely nothing about this wine excites me. Yes it is a mere village but the overriding sensation is one of perpetual anticipation. I have waited nigh on ten years so describing this wine as shy would merely be a kindly euphemism for characterless. It is dilute rather than mineral, anodyne as opposed to understated and as limp as it is limpid. I have never wished for a 2009 to be more typical of its vintage. (2096 views)
Tasted by rwpalmer on 12/9/2018 & rated 88 points: Medium garnet. Actually prettily scented and remarkably subtle for a Grivot of this era. Not exactly refined but not rustic either. Still plenty of life in my view--perhaps better to come. (1836 views)
Tasted by Richard P Howden on 9/16/2017 & rated 90 points: Light nose of red fruit, strawberry. Palate at first reserved but opens after a few hours into a burst of more red fruit, a hit of tannin and some acid wash. Good with pork. Enjoyable but not stunning. (3254 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 8/8/2017: Tuesday Night Double Blind $60+ (Roswell, GA): Light crimson ruby, see through, pale rim; sweet red cherry, cherry pit, fine tannin, good grip, very nice, good but a bit awkward, kind of dumb as my previous note suggested. (3414 views)
Tasted by jcha24 on 7/1/2017: This is fully mature. Drink up. (3248 views)
Tasted by hermesbach32 on 5/17/2017 & rated 90 points: Seems like a really good Burgundy, but has not had the class you would expect from a Grivot village wine from Vosne.
Is maybe in a down phase, will wait 2-3 years until opening the next bottle, maybe with more tertiary flavours, it will seem more round and complex
It was still long and showed a very nice acidity!
But already seems a bit developed... (2814 views)
Tasted by Sixchips600 on 9/2/2016 & rated 92 points: This bottle was back to previous form. Although it went through a dead phase at about 3-4 hours open and re-emerged day two. Had with Michel Gros VR 09 and this wine by a point. Had more refined and energetic nose of red fruit and Vosne spice. Focused palate and nice acidity. (3581 views)
Tasted by Sixchips600 on 3/9/2016 & rated 90 points: Less impressive than a bottle 2 years ago. Nice wine with good black fruit and slice but came across a bit simple and light. (2956 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 8/4/2015 & rated 90 points: Tuesday Night Double Blind $40+ (Bin 75): Pale red, see through, very pale rim; light floral, sweet penetrating red strawberry, light cherry, cocoa, stony, playing it closer to the vest which makes me think cooler year but then I go back and get blueberry (Vosne side of NSG, Vosne?), some green in there too; good fruit on the palate, lacks a little focus, still youthful, not super interesting right now, some grip on the finish; seems to have shed its exuberant 2009 ripeness and it is going to take a nap for a bit, we will see when it wakes up, not sure if air would have done the job for the bottle we had. (4109 views)
Tasted by Cote d'Or on 3/22/2015 flawed bottle: From restaurant list, decanted tasted over 1.5 hrs
-semi-translucent, some color development early bricking
-muted, touch of Vosne spice
-med- acidity, med weight/concentration, shy but opened up a little after an hour, simple, pretty dark berry and a bit of spice element, trace TCA?
-may have been slightly corked but seemingly more advanced than expected too (4155 views)
Tasted by Sixchips600 on 11/21/2014 & rated 92 points: First from a case. This was really impressive. Silky texture like a rousseau or Cathiard. Good balance and elegance. (4101 views)
Tasted by yofog on 9/7/2014: Pretty serious for its level, with deep, silky fruit and a little coffee. Nicely ripe and there's some oak here but it's pretty. Some herbal and fresh candied notes, good tannic grip on the finish. (3916 views)
Tasted by Mel-o-Vino on 4/6/2014 & rated 88 points: I have a feeling I would have given this a higher rating if I'd been in a situation where I could decant. It was very tight when I first poured a glass. Over the course of the next hour, it gradually opened up and changed. Beautiful, delicate red fruit on the nose. Light fruit and stone (minerality) on the palate. More earth developed near the end of the night. The finish was short....not ready to show it's stuff. My mistake for opening too soon. (4205 views)
Tasted by MemorialWineFan on 12/20/2013 & rated 89 points: In a situation where I could not decant. Opened bottle and let it sit thirty minutes. Drank the bottle over the next 30 minutes with a friend. Great nose to start. I wish I could have had it open longer or decanted to see what it would become. I was surprised how smooth it is right now. I had expected a more tannic start. It was a good bottle and both of us enjoyed consuming it. (3803 views)
Tasted by Ridgerunner on 12/7/2013 & rated 91 points: really enjoyed this bottle tonight (3365 views)
Tasted by Ridgerunner on 10/9/2013 & rated 91 points: Admirable entry level Burgundy! (3066 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio

Vosne-Romanée

Vosne Romanée is one of the smallest wine villages in Burgundy. The wines possess diverse characteristics, but they can generally be considered to have complexity and longevity beyond nearly all other wines in the world. The village has six grand crus: Romanée-Conti, La Romanée, La Tâche, Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, and La Grande Rue. While there is monopoly control of four of the six grand crus, the village has at least forty growers sharing its vineyards. The top premier cru includes Les Malconsorts, Cros Parantoux, Les Chaumes, and Clos des Réas.
