Tasted by PANYC on 5/7/2024 & rated 92 points: Drinking well right now still has life left in it, really nice tertiary notes with nice finish but not as long as I would have liked. (179 views)
Tasted by ONEFIVE on 12/25/2023: Fruit forward nose. Tons of dried cherry, blue fruit, and a bit of sweet hoisin sauce and spice.
Lovely on the palate, with medium weight, med acid, med+ tannin. There is a lot of power here and the fruit is hanging on well.
Delicious. This will be better in 5+ years. (1183 views)
Tasted by Donsa on 10/18/2023: Delicioso, en Perfecto estado.
Para los 65 . (1560 views)
Tasted by RockinCabs on 7/17/2023 & rated 96 points: Nose: Dark cherry, dark red berries, leather, spice and nice herb notes. The red fruit just comes in perfumed waves with outstanding complexity at the edges. Cedar, leather, anise and chinese five spice all emerge.
Palate: The palate is equally well balanced and perfumed. The red fruit is precise silky and mature.
Finish: Just brilliant. A silky well integrated Cheval Blanc that was showing perfectly. (2534 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 5/3/2023 & rated 91 points: Red vine notes, perfumy, pot-pouri; soft entry, balanced, structured, but just a bit thinner mid-palate after the Diamond Creek. Good, but surrounded by 2 better heavy hitters (09 Diamond Creek and '85 Lynch Bages). Guessed '05 Right bank. Lawry's DD TOC Blind. Very good shape for '95. (2709 views)
Tasted by salil on 4/14/2023 & rated 95 points: My last experience with this was underwhelming and generally meh. This was anything but. Stunningly fragrant with remarkable clarity and brightness to the dark fruit, herbs, leather, and tobacco flavours, very polished on the palate with the tannin gentler than I'd expect for the vintage, and a remarkably silky texture. Beautiful wine. (2954 views)
Tasted by acyso on 4/14/2023 & rated 95 points: St. Emilion night (Chicago, IL): Wow. A stunning wine right from the get-go, this was fully mature and drinking so well. Lovely silky texture on the palate, with that perfect balance of fruit, herbs, and leather on the nose. There's just the right amount of sweetness from the fruit on the palate too. So many left bank 1995s have been utterly charmless, dull wines, but this is something completely different. For me, this is comfortably showing mature, secondary characteristics, but you definitely get the sense that there's many more years to go here. I really like how the wines turned out at the estate in this era; this bottle is no exception. (3028 views)
Tasted by RayOB on 4/5/2023 & rated 97 points: Drank in London
The prime example of CF from a wonderful vintage. Drinking beautifully (1902 views)
Tasted by burlingtonm on 4/3/2023 & rated 95 points: Vertical from 1966 to 2014 at Wine Watch: one of my favorite wines as this showed really well with rich fruit, great balance, elegance and a long finish. (1503 views)
Tasted by MS86 on 3/31/2023 & rated 98 points: Clear, medium ruby fading to a clear rim.

Evocative, feminine, stemmy bouquet of stone, violet and herbs.

Palate is simply beautiful. Balanced and textural with fine tannins. Velvet.

Flavours of violet, red berries, espresso, dark chocolate, plum, mint and kirsch.

Stunning, delicate wine. Still opening with decades of life ahead. (1178 views)
Tasted by rgawlowski on 3/11/2023 & rated 96 points: Still young, but already great; beautiful garnet color, smooth fruit with nice acidity; excellent bouquet and long finish; better after 2hrs+ decant. (1367 views)
Tasted by liber on 2/17/2023 & rated 95 points: 12th of 24, decanted 90 minutes, perfect cork and level, little changed from last bottle in December 20, increasingly generous and layered tempered by CF herby green edge, limited upside, 25+ years. VF (18.5). (1471 views)
Tasted by yaCellar on 2/4/2023 & rated 97 points: Wildly delicious an hour following double decant. Plenty of life remaining. (1438 views)
Tasted by Drinkslogger on 1/20/2023 & rated 97 points: Rose bouquet and cedar on the nose. Drink now. (727 views)
Tasted by Ash in Hermosa on 11/12/2022 & rated 96 points: No decant. No tannin. Musty, forest floor, leather nose. Blackberries and prune. I wish I had a more experienced pallet to comprehend this level of wine, but suffice it to say it was thoroughly enjoyable. We ate it with dry aged bone-in New York strip and some bluepoint oysters. (2074 views)
Tasted by dkentaustin on 9/1/2022 & rated 97 points: Deep garnet with subtle amber edge. Red currant, cigar box, wet tobacco leaves and sweet vanilla oak. Chalky chocolate dusk laced with a light caramel flavor and fruits that gracefully dance along the palate. Still beautifully young and vibrant and easily the best bottle of this we’ve tried. Can’t wait for the next!

p.s. frog legs, escargot, French onion soup and beef Wellington (2745 views)
Tasted by joshabramson on 4/22/2022 & rated 97 points: Underrated vintage for Cheval Blanc, this drinks great right now. Minimal air required. Lots of deep, rich, ripe fruit and super fresh! (3466 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 1/1/2022 & rated 96 points: Tasted this next to the 1998 Latour and Margaux and it had the edge over them. It married great earthy aromatics with deep blue fruit and forest floor with a rich yet precise palate. Great wine. 96+ (5027 views)
Tasted by KenK on 12/16/2021 & rated 93 points: Beautiful aromas and nice depth of ripe spicy dark fruits with a clear streak of bright acid.
Very good, lots of breed and complexity. Beginning to show some real nuance only aging brings. Still I was slightly disappointed relative though my very lofty expectations only due to the noticeable acid streak. (3933 views)
Tasted by Papies on 11/18/2021 & rated 95 points: Requires a good amount of decanting and a good hour was useful here.
Definitely still quite you and with lots of life ahead, bright and with a rich feel and a lot more youthful than for example L'Evangile 1995 we had a few weeks ago ( Papies 94 and really well evolved now) .
Juicy in a way and still has a richness of fruit and much like 6 months ago when we had this last still full of energy. This would definitely with some more bottle age but delicious and effortlessly elegant now too. 95 (3690 views)
Tasted by Malarky997 on 11/14/2021 & rated 94 points: Hint of pepper (2973 views)
Tasted by NickBurwood on 10/24/2021 & rated 92 points: Wouldn't turn this down but has proved somewhat disappointing when set against high expectations.
Medium bodied, with a somewhat viscous core of red fruit preserve suffused with hints of smoke and smooth tannins. Acidity, quite pronounced, brings balance. Overall a nice bottle if underwhelming.
Will be drinking up over the next year or so. (2641 views)
Tasted by dkentaustin on 10/3/2021 & rated 95 points: Ruby red color. Cigar box, red currant, rhubarb and minerality. Good tannin grip with a lovely, lighter weight on the palate…very welcoming, elegant and approachable. Incredibly interesting given the Cabernet franc and merlot combo making it very distinctly Cheval Blanc.

p.s. seafood cioppino and asparagus (2241 views)
Tasted by KenK on 9/27/2021 & rated 95 points: Nice sweet ripe red berry fruits with a seemly sweet creamy richness that comes across beautifully. Nice dark rich fruits with a tobacco flavor, smooth seamless and quite long. Impressive. In a perfect drinking window now, we’ll endowed and so smooth. I really liked this one. (2394 views)
Tasted by dream on 8/21/2021 & rated 94 points: This bottle was a bit softer than the last but the beauty and silkiness of a fairly mature Cheval is quite apparent. Light on its feet and layered with a stunningly elegant and complex finish with notes of dark chocolate, earthy gravel and smoky minerals. Yum! (2433 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Saint Emilion Grat Classified Growth, Classified Growths, Grands Crus Classes, GCC

In 1954, while the "Graves" growths had just published their own classification, the wine syndicate of Saint-Emilion, composed by wine growers, brokers and wine traders with the approval of the INAO - Institut National des Appellations d'Origine (A.O.C), decided to work on a classification for the wines of Saint Emilion. Initially, four grades were defined. These were reduced to two - First Great Classified Growth (A and B) and Great Classified Growth - in 1984.

As of Medoc's 1855 historical grading, the Saint-Emilion Great Classified Growth classification is not only based on qualitative criteria by tasting the wines on a ten years period previous to the assessment, but also on commercial considerations such as:
- sales price levels
- national and international commercial distribution
- the estate's reputation on the market

Properties who don't manage to join the club of about sixty Classified Growths are given the denomination of Great Growth ("Grand Cru"), while the remaining wineries of the A.O.C are simply reported as "Saint-Emilion". It is to be noted that the owners must officially apply to appear in the official classification. Thus for example the famous Chateau Tertre-Roteboeuf, whose quality and reputation would easily justify to be listed among the First Great Classified Growths, does not appear here by the will of its owner, François Mitjaville.

The Saint-Emilion Great Growth classification was revised in 1969, 1985, 1996 and 2006. The only two guaranteed vintage (A.O.C) who can apply to the classification are the "Saint-Emilion Grand Cru" and "Saint-Emilion" areas.

By grading 61 properties, the 2006 revision confirmed many growths from the former classification, but also caused a number of surprises and a few inevitable disappointments. Many observers thought that the impressive progression of Perse's Chateau Pavie since 1998 would be rewarded by an upgrade into the First Great Classified Growths (A) category, but finally such was not the case.

Among the estates promoted to the First Great Classified Growths B category are Chateau Troplong-Mondot and Pavie-Macquin, whose efforts made since the Nineties fully justify their new grade. It should be noted that no First Great Classified Growth was relegated to the lower Great Classified Growth class.

Promoted growths from the status of Great Growth ("Grand Cru") to Great Classified Growth ("Grand Cru Classe") are: Chateaux Bellefont-Belcier, Destieux, Fleur Cardinale, Grand Corbin, Grand Corbin-Despagne and Monbousquet.

The demoted growths from the status of Great Classified Growth to Great Growth are: Chateaux Bellevue, Cadet Bon, Faurie de Souchard, Guadet Saint-Julien, La Tour du Pin-Figeac (Belivier), La Tour du Pin-Figeac (Moueix), Lamarzelle, Petite Faurie de Soutard, Tertre Daugay, Villemaurine and Yon-Figeac. If the recent samples of some of the above mentioned properties may justify their current downgrade, there are great chances that estates like Bellevue, Tertre Daugay or Yon-Figeac will be upgraded to their previous rankings by the next revision in 2016 as the progresses noted after 2000, but not entering in the range of vintages (1993 - 2002) appointed for the criteria of selection for the 2006 classification, are noticable.

The two following estates have completely disappeared from the Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classification: Curé-Bon-la-Madeleine (integrated meanwhile to Chateau Canon) and La Clusière (integrated meanwhile to Chateau Pavie).

Finally, no estate considered as "garagiste" has integrated the classification. Valandraud, Mondotte, Le Dome, Bellevue-Mondotte or Magrez-Fombrauge have, for the least, the potential to be ranked as Great Classified Growths. In sight of the very fine quality reached by the above mentioned estates in recent vintages as well as all the innovative wine making methods used by the "garagistes", it remains to be seen whether the authorities will dare to cross the line in 2016..?
