Community Tasting Notes (average 88.5 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 54 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by peterseville on 5/14/2022: Almost minty/eucalyptus on the nose. Plums, dark cherries, tannins still very forward. Chewy but also thins quite quickly. Think I like it… (435 views)
Tasted by chbeaumont on 11/4/2016 & rated 90 points: Rubied, strong colour; sumptuous, berried nose, hickory woodsmoke twang; plush, soft, bags of fruit, an inner core provides drive; good definition on the long finish. Fully ready, this has plenty of time in hand. (3588 views)
Tasted by pmgsmith on 1/6/2016 & rated 90 points: This has now taken on a deeper & more structured form with the fruit still high in the mix. Long silky finish too. Hit its drinking window methinks. Drink up & enjoy. Very nice. (4502 views)
Tasted by jose javier on 1/28/2015 & rated 93 points: Belleza de Vino. Salud (5526 views)
Tasted by chbeaumont on 1/16/2015 & rated 86 points: Rubied; slightly stewed, simplistic, one dimensional. Finishes well. No need to rush but unlikely to progress. (5246 views)
Tasted by cannym on 12/15/2014 & rated 91 points: Xmas Meal with Ann(e)s & David (Howies Waterloo Place): Deep dark ruby. Nose some spices and dark berries. Then, oooff! Big wine. Tons of dark fruits, black cherries, cocoa, dried meats. Decent acidity, good length. Fairly soft tannins. Rich & full, stood up very well to a venison casserole, Big, verging on blowsy but lovely. (5359 views)
Tasted by JuzMaintain on 6/25/2014 & rated 91 points: PnP. VERY much resembling an Amarone, perhaps a lighter version. Dusty raisin on the nose but considerably better with air and time. Black cherry and licorice were predominant. Solid 91. Drink now. (3432 views)
Tasted by Lemmy-W on 5/11/2014 & rated 90 points: Consistent with previous notes. a really nice wine. (2559 views)
Tasted by Phenol73 on 3/9/2014 & rated 91 points: Very clean, very precise nose. Dark cherry and plumb fruit, fennel, dill, soil, cocoa. This is superbly balanced and everything is where it should be. The nose can be a touch subdued compared to other Rioja/Tempranillo, but it is still very well composed and attractive. The palate is rich and very fresh. Acidity is pert and lively, tanins are big and well structured. Tanins are also slightly dusty on the palate; rustic. (2235 views)
Tasted by chbeaumont on 2/21/2014 & rated 88 points: Dark; initially pinched, angular; this opened up into an expressive wine, fleshy; youthful with potential to fill out further. (2159 views)
Tasted by Zellao on 2/5/2014 & rated 88 points: Very Nice Crianza (2498 views)
Tasted by KikeG on 10/12/2013 & rated 85 points: My bottle really needed some time in the Decanter. Horrible nose initially. Wine mellowed out after two hours and was just ok. Maybe this bottle had some flaws.. (2552 views)
 Tasted by lael300 on 10/2/2013 & rated 89 points: - Garnet color. (2112 views)
Tasted by lael300 on 8/13/2013: - Garnet color with fast forming legs. It's balanced and has flavours of blackberry, violet and cedar with a medium body. Narrow texture with a medium finish. (2176 views)
Tasted by pmgsmith on 8/8/2013 & rated 87 points: Very smooth, fruit forward (dark fruit); if anything a little too smooth. Perhaps a little closed, as it has a great colour, very fragrant nose but is a little thin on the palate. Good balance, soft tannins nothing not to like about the wine but just lacking something memorable, which is a shame as I've been following Capellanes for years. There is something not to like about the actual bottle mind: terribly overweight - why? (2087 views)
Tasted by Burgundynick on 7/14/2013 & rated 88 points: Like my last bottle, very good (2180 views)
Tasted by Burgundynick on 7/6/2013 & rated 88 points: 88 points, a great value wine, wonderful mouth filling red, a bit tannic but with good fruit. Finishing the bottle off the next day and it's a touch better, warm, deep dark fruits, good acidity and the tannins have softened. (1814 views)
Tasted by Levisson on 5/1/2013 & rated 90 points: delightful surprise in a argentinian restaurant in Fuengirola, Spain. beautiful colour and soft tones, lovely. (2228 views)
Tasted by elvinet on 12/5/2012 & rated 90 points: Color cereza, ribete cardenalíceo oscuro tirando a granatoso, capa alta y lágrima fina bien tintada.

Producer website

Pago de los Capellanes is located 1 kilometre from the village of Pedrosa de Duero, in the heart of the Ribera del Duero region. It is owned by the Rodero-Villa family and they now have over 70 hectares of vineyards.

The Tinto Joven is a blend of Tinto Fino (80%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%) and Merlot (10%), and is matured in oak casks for 5 months.

The Crianza is a blend of Tinto Fino (85%), and Cabernet Sauvignon (15%) and spends 12 months in a mixture of American and French oak.

The Reserva is made from the same blend as the Crianza but is made from the finest fruit available and is matured in oak for 18 months.

Tempranillo

Varietal character (Appellation America) | TAPAS: Tempranillo Advocates, Producers and Amigos Society

Tempranillo is the premium red wine grape variety from the Rioja and Ribera del Duero region in Spain. Tempranillo's aromas and flavors often combine elements of berryish fruit, herbaceousness, and an earthy-leathery minerality. Being low in acidity and sugar content, it is commonly blended with Carignan (Mazuela), Grenache (Garnacha), Graciano, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

WineAccess
The varietal is at its best in top Riojas, where oak aging is employed to generate increased complexity and harmony. From the best sites, these wines can be remarkably concentrated with great aging potential. New wines from this region are darker, and more robust, with more dynamic primary fruit flavors than traditionally styled examples. These wines seem to reflect the influence of Spain's other key region for Tempranillo, Ribera del Duero. Regardless of style, Riojas tend to be medium bodied wines, with more acid than tannins. These wines generally feature Tempranillo blended with Garancha, Mazuelo, and Graciano. For these wines, there are three quality levels, which will appear on the label. Everyday drinking wines fall under the category of "Crianza", "Reserva" denotes more complex and concentrated wines, and "Gran Reserva" refers to the most intense wines, made only in the best years.

The same labeling scheme applies to wines from Ribera del Duero, which, like Rioja, is dominated by Tempranillo and shares similar blending grapes. Again, Ribera del Duero wines are generally darker and more powerful than the most traditional Riojas. These wines also generally see less oak treatment than Riojas. From Rioja, we like wines from Allende, Marqués de Cáceres, Montecillo, and Cune. In Ribera del Duero, consider Dominio de Pingus, Emilio Moro, Convento San Francisco, and Pesquera.
Pair older-style Rioja with simple meats like chicken, leg of lamb, and pork loin. However, the newer style of Rioja and Ribera del Duero works especially well with bolder meat dishes or an aged Spanish cheese like Manchego or Idiazabal.

Spain

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
