Tasted by dlowrey99 on 9/10/2021 & rated 92 points: screw top, pnp, 60 degrees. in an excellent place right now, developed and rounded profile, rich, balanced. white flower, grassy nose. trop fruit, ripe pineapple, cyellow apple, acid contrast, dark caramel finish. paired spectacularly with mushroom swiss turkey burger, with caramelized onions. 13%. (995 views)
Tasted by chefdilletante on 4/9/2021: Great place right now. Weighty. Honeyed with gobs of beeswax. (1133 views)
Tasted by wayfarer on 10/19/2018 & rated 90 points: Quite a different experience than first bottle, now 5+ years ago. This was quite nice aged chenin, pretty much as described by eugene..and jnewman. The inklings of tertiary flavors were interesting and pleasant, and complemented the white fruit, citrus, floral quality. Nose was not to me as robust as jnewman found, even with airtime, but still nice. Very nice balance and good length. (1725 views)
Tasted by Eugenedinapoli on 1/16/2018: medium gold. honey, pears, oxidative notes (marzipan). textured mouthfeel. what a bargain (1930 views)
Tasted by jnewman77 on 3/2/2017: I don't drink Savenierres often, but its always interesting and fun to explore. The nose is wild with acacia, peach blossom, jasmine, orange peel, fresh hay, beeswax, and hints of damp stone. The palate is rich, unctuous and yet still feels somehow fairly fresh. It finishes beautifully and is quite tasty, but still seems to have years of positive development ahead. (2532 views)
Tasted by 560 B&W on 6/15/2015 & rated 88 points: Pnp. Some interesting notes but too much bitter on the finish. 13% (3327 views)
Tasted by Johnfromspokane on 4/21/2015 & rated 87 points: This oozes Savennieres funk. Not my particular favorite style of Chenin, but that's a small part of tasting wine, right? A fine example of the style. (3007 views)
Tasted by Sfrye on 2/6/2015 & rated 90 points: Many people have said this wine is flat, but I'd argue it's subtle. You certainly pick up some minerality. We enjoyed with with braised swordfish with peppers, olives and onion. I thought it was perfect as it didn't have so much acidity that it overpowered the fish, but complimented it. I'm going to look for some more. (3077 views)
Tasted by sleepyhaus on 1/12/2015: Another disappointing showing. meh. (3049 views)
Tasted by AtoZ on 4/22/2014 & rated 88 points: Kind of light and lacking. There but not there. (3422 views)
Tasted by Bruce 1er on 4/15/2014 & rated 90 points: Light body, dry, with a crisp finish. Interesting earthy bouquet. Has a tin element that gives it a unique character (not unpleasant). Very good. (2250 views)
Tasted by Billigan on 3/27/2014 & rated 91 points: Really classic showing here, with that lovely, complex nose of beeswax, lanolin, hay, honeydew, and a bit of orange peel. A nice hit of acid on the palate, followed by a lovely, unctuous texture, and long, slightly sweet finish. Like any good Savennieres, it's a nice, cerebral wine that went really well with dinner and is a super bargain. (2391 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 2/2/2014 & rated 85 points: I think this was borderline flawed. It was a bit stinky on the nose. I really like these boutique Chenins until, they cross over to the wierd side and start show sour milk and dirty diaper aromas. This one was on the edge. The palate was much better than the nose. (2906 views)
Tasted by K&J on 12/13/2013 & rated 90 points: Creamy edge, almost a light, oily texture. Intriguing, nuanced, savory. (2330 views)
Tasted by jnewman77 on 10/21/2013: Very tasty. Melon, peach, and apricot aromas. The palate is rich, almost oily, but has enough acidity to keep it interesting and refreshing. It finishes with nice balance. Overall a lovely Chenin blanc that still has years of development ahead. (2088 views)
Tasted by sastewart on 9/30/2013 & rated 90 points: Very nice, fresh flowers, stones and balanced acids. Medium bodied, with some salinity with nice pear and good minerality. 90 points (2069 views)
Tasted by Gordonium on 7/28/2013: My notes were consistent with others' positive reviews. Freshly cut lawn/meadow, flint, matchstick, and tonic water, with mineral and saline notes. A lot going on here, but in a particularly Savennieres way. If that's what you like, then this is well worth the money (I paid $20). Paired nicely with two dinners: gilled portobello burgers and zucchini on night one, and sausage pizza on night two. (2343 views)
Tasted by DaddyNeedsPow on 6/13/2013 & rated 92 points: A wonderful Savenniers with serious complexity. Popped and poured, not quite chilled but had spent some time in the refrigerator. The nose on opening was fascinating: cut dandelion and matchstick, showing crisp and dry on the palette with a quinine and mineral note. The nose proceeded to evolve at a rapid pace over the first dinner course. The creme soda note was particularly surprising. A perfect pairing with pan-roasted calamari. (2295 views)
Tasted by Nealefisher on 5/26/2013 & rated 89 points: Decent - not particularly exciting. (2383 views)
Tasted by kleng on 4/12/2013: Lots going on in this bottle. Much richer than I remember, with white fruit, rockiness, definite wooly notes. Very interesting and complex, maybe doesn't win for pure pleasure and deliciousness but gives a lot to think about. (2359 views)
Tasted by chefdilletante on 3/29/2013: I think the dichotomy among reviews is based on reviewers' expectations of Savennieres. True, it is Chenin Blanc, but it's not Vouvray or Anjou or Montlouis. Savenniere, IMHO, just isn't as friendly when young as the other Loire Chenin Blanc appellations.

This is a very fine Savennieres. It's by no means a monumental one, a fine acid backbone carries some good nuttiness, and a finish of salinity and minerality (like a little version of my comments on Baumard's single vineyard Clos du Papillon).

No, you are not going to get a nice pow of tropical fruit to go with your acidity. This is not a Huet Vouvray and it's not a Chidaine Montlouis. But that's what's so beautiful about Chenin Blanc: There is no hiding between terroir and glass. What nature puts into the vineyard is what you get out. (2371 views)
Tasted by the godfather on 3/25/2013: tasty vin (2054 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 3/24/2013 & rated 89 points: Nose: There is a flintiness on the nose with some crushed rocks, slate, some wax, and lemon curds.

Taste: Fuller bodied with crisp medium/high acidity. There is very good balance with tones of crushed rocks, wax, and lemon curds.

Overall: This is a very good savennieres. It's on the brawny side with a good mineral base. (1995 views)
Tasted by Madkat on 3/18/2013 & rated 79 points: Going to agree with recent ratings, this is just not good.... in any way. Little fruit, little nose. Mouth is full in a weighty sense but nothing comes through until the finish which is bitter / sour. Don't know if we are all getting bad bottles, but I find little to like in this wine. (1991 views)
Tasted by baseballvino on 3/18/2013: Not a fan, but usually love all Chenin Blanc. Waxy taste, like parafin. Very little fruit. Dry, almost bitter but not quite. No one liked it. May have been off bottle, so will not score. (1630 views)

Savennières

Savennières is a small, relatively well-known Loire Valley region producing wines made from the chenin blanc grape.

They are not conventionally fruity, and benefit from extensive aging.

Savennieres often have smells like white truffles and animal notes, even when young. They can last for a tremendous amount of time, and some people mistake the evolved aromas after 10-20 years with oxidization, but I have yet to taste an oxidised chenin blanc, since the amount and type of acidity (many g/l and tartaric) preserve the fruit in a much more effective way than e.g. chardonnay.
