Community Tasting Notes (average 92.3 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 53 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by jshufelt on 6/5/2020 & rated 91 points: Pop and pour. Compared to our previous bottle consumed in late 2015, this one retains the deep gold hue and the rich, almost syrupy mouthfeel, but the fruit has receded. It's there, but the wine now leads with minerality, and stays there through the finish. I think we're probably at the end of the plateau, so pop one open and judge for yourself if you haven't already done so. (1102 views)
Tasted by MattMauldin on 12/21/2019 & rated 92 points: Decades of Decadence - "The 9's" (Buellton, CA): Intense spice and rich citrus fruit on the nose that carries through to the palate. Richly textured and full-weighted palate with great flavor intensity brought into focus with nicely balancing acidity. The wine sharpens and shows more finesse with air. Excellent. (1376 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 12/19/2019 & rated 91 points: Decades of Decadence -- the '9' Edition (Our Favorite Spot in Buellton, CA): Fully mature, but not fading. A really off nose, almost like cooked pork or something (?), but not found on the palate. Plenty of acid, alongside ripe orchard fruit and mild butterscotch. Pretty straightforward, in a good way, but I did miss an element of complexity. (1347 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 3/9/2018 & rated 92 points: Color of apple cider. Butter, oak, mint, and caramel nose. Mature. Ripe apple vanilla, butter,, integrated tannins, moderate acidity, long finish. If you are a Chablis fan, don't go here, if you like rich buttery Cali Chard you will like this. (1802 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 12/10/2017 & rated 94 points: Lemon yellow. Tropical fruits, lemon, butterscotch, tart apple and well balanced finish. This was magical with ravioli lasagna with spinach and sausage. Drank best at cellar temperature. Exceptional. (1996 views)
Tasted by sfbikeguy on 9/9/2017 & rated 90 points: Probably held a bit too long. Very enjoyable none the less. (1217 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 2/3/2017 & rated 93 points: Wonderful tropical fruit aromas and flavors on the mature palate and long finish with lovely complexity. (1459 views)
Tasted by jshufelt on 1/23/2017 & rated 94 points: Consistent with previous tasting note. (1439 views)
Tasted by mpsocal on 11/25/2016 & rated 92 points: It's not your typical California Chardonnay. There is flavor of lemon with a hint of butter. Outstanding finish. This is very impressive. (1204 views)
Tasted by slywka7 on 11/24/2016 & rated 93 points: Last bottle of SVD Dumol Chardonnay. Turning a nice yellow color. Nose of lemon meringue, tropical fruit, banana and pineapple. This is still drinking nicely with flavors of lemon tart, papaya, mango and a a touch of vanilla. Ends with a nice 25-30 second finish. This was probably better in it's youth but still drinking quite well and not fading like the Clare I had a while back. (1174 views)
Tasted by andrewdodd86 on 6/23/2016 & rated 94 points: Old note, I remember this being well made, bright yellow fruit, not too buttery, and oak was there but in check (1382 views)
Tasted by camben on 12/30/2015: Amazingly fresh and vital. Drank cold to cool. Oak was in check
I loved this bottle
Even on day 3 the last sip was still great (1295 views)
Tasted by jshufelt on 12/29/2015 & rated 93 points: Pop and pour. In the glass, deep gold. On the nose, lemon, melons, and a modest touch of oak. On the palate, a very balanced mix of fruit, honeysuckle, oak, and minerality, with a rich but not cloying texture, and a moderately long finish. This is what we've come to expect from DuMOL, and it's right where you'd want it to be. (1228 views)
Tasted by nortonnose on 12/2/2015 & rated 94 points: This was terrific. A Burgundy lover's CA chard! We've really enjoyed the few prior bottles and vintages, but this bottle tonight was truly on point. Perfect balance of lush, literally mouthwatering fruit, mouthfeel, weight, toasted vanilla oak and long finish. Wish I had more! (1389 views)
Tasted by Amerique on 8/4/2015 & rated 92 points: Huge butter bomb with delicious citrus fruit with a touch of vanilla oak, excellent structure, OK finish (1488 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 6/29/2015 & rated 92 points: Worldwide Chards (Edina Country Club): Intense wine with lemon, oak, spices and tones. Buttery finish and medium to long. Drink now to 2018. (1537 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 6/29/2015 & rated 93 points: Consumed one glass over about an hour. I really like this wine from a stylistic point of view. It is rich, bold and flavorful, yet handles itself with great elegance. Oak, fruit and acidity are nicely balanced. There is honeysuckle and banana liqueur mixed in with the more traditional Chardonnay characteristics. This showed significantly better than 3 years ago. (1505 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 6/28/2015 & rated 93 points: Worldwide World Class Chards (Edina, MN): Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 3 hours. Gorgeous notes of white peach and lemon drops on the nose with light vanilla bean, mild oak, and honeydew melon. The palate is deft and elegant, banana, lemon chiffon, light oak, lovely, nicely layered fruits with a silky texture, a touch of honey, nice acid and a long finish. Love it! 93+ to 94pts. (1876 views)
Tasted by brianofthevine on 3/13/2015 & rated 92 points: Lemon oil and citrus, nice finish. (837 views)
Tasted by WineHawkeye on 12/13/2014 & rated 94 points: Deeper yellow. Drinking perfectly. Typical DuMol brilliance at the perfect age. 94. (1767 views)
(2128 views)
Tasted by Stumpy on 4/8/2014: Seemed old and over the hill. Light caramel color and dead flavors. (1981 views)
Tasted by winelover1808 on 1/5/2014 & rated 89 points: not as great as prior bottles - but perhaps our palates were tainted after a great 2011 dumol lia viognier. this tasted too oaky, too much fruit and a bit too monolithic after the Lia Viognier. (2310 views)
Tasted by winelover1808 on 12/28/2013 & rated 94 points: huge layers of fruit and oak - but well integrated and well done. big crowd pleaser and very very enjoyable. long long finish. seems to be at its peak right now. great CA chard. (2227 views)
Tasted by Boon on 4/26/2013 & rated 86 points: Excellent. Buttery and smooth. Great finish. (2983 views)

Chardonnay

The Chardonnay Grape

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
