| Community Tasting Notes (average 88.9 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 35 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by Vinum Rudy on 2/24/2024 & rated 90 points: The last one of six. Been in my cellar for 15 years. Past its prime obviously but a solid accompaniment for a northern deer osso bucco. (139 views) | | Tasted by darrenhe on 9/15/2023 flawed bottle: This has gone! Brown and medicinal! Sadly have another 3 in storage. Could be the bottle but other 2 haven’t been great! (292 views) | | Tasted by Pezzoloit on 11/6/2022 & rated 90 points: Great acidity considering age….2008 in 2022 flowers and long taste! (407 views) | | Tasted by Vinum Rudy on 2/13/2022 & rated 93 points: Beautiful. Paired with lamb shoulder perfectly. Soft tanins. (436 views) | | Tasted by Weinberg Falls on 8/27/2019 & rated 90 points: Charming and rounded Chianti Classico. Spiced plum and raisin on the nose. Rich and smooth dark stewed fruit on the palette. Not many abundant secondary flavours, as they are overpowered by the hot, Amarone-style, piquant finish from the alcohol. Shown as 13.5% but I'd wager a tad more from the chunky legs. Either way this is a lovely, inexpensive wine in a good place. Quite rich and nice for the vintage. (5205 views) | | Tasted by stadler on 5/29/2013: Robe rubis moyen, reflets grenat. Nez à l'intensité prononcée, fleurs, poivre. Evolution. Acidité moyenne +, tannins bien présents, alcool moyen +, corps assez charpenté. Arômes moyennement intenses au palais, note fumée, fruit rouge, poivre, note animale, finale longue. Très belle cuvée. (3653 views) | | Tasted by David J Cooper on 12/23/2012 & rated 91 points: Medium dark garnet. Great mid wieght nose that really is terroir driven. I think the lack of ripeness in the vintage really lets the earthiness of the region shine through. A long with the earth there is some nice black cherry, thyme and a hint of cranberry. The flavours put on wieght as the wine sits in the decanter. The nose is really strong as soon as the bottle was opened. (3364 views) | | Tasted by Eric Guido on 2/7/2012 & rated 90 points: The Italian Wine Masters (Metropolitan Pavilion): The nose showed plums, ripe strawberry, dark chocolate and herbs. On the palate, it was soft and enveloping with mixed berries in a sweet and sour display with great balance. The finish was long and fresh. This is everything I want in Chianti Classico. | Castello di Ama Producer website Location on Google Map
Castello di Ama’s 65.38 hectares of specialised vineyards, officially enrolled in the Chianti Classico Register, are located at elevations between 390 and 530 metres in calcareous-clay, pebble-rich soils. Part of the vineyards were planted between 1974 and 1978, at an average density of 3,000 vines per hectare, while newer plantings at a density of 5,300 vines per hectare, starting in 1996 and continuing to the present date, replace the outdated vineyards. The vines are vertically trained, to the open lyre pruned to the Guyot system, and to spurred cordon. The varieties, grafted onto rootstock 420, are 80% Sangiovese and 20% Malvasia Nera, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.
Sangiovese BlendSangiovese blend is used in CellarTracker for Italian wines to represent wines predominantly made of Sangiovese and blended with traditional Italian grapes. It is different than SuperTuscan which is a blend of Sangiovese with non-traditional (eg Bordeaux) varieties, often in closer to equal portions. For example, Chianti is at least 80% Sangiovese and will always be listed Sangiovese blend.Italy Italian Wines (ItalianMade.com, The Italian Trade Commission) | Italian Wine Guide on the WineDoctorTuscany Tuscany (ItalianMade.com) | TuscanytChianti Consorzio Vino Chianti | Chianti (wikipedia) |
