Community Tasting Notes (average 93.9 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 43 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Burgnick on 1/19/2024 & rated 89 points: Dried fruit, sous bois, forest floor, graphite and earth. Dark fruit driven palate but quite rustic. (623 views)
Tasted by jfpwine on 12/1/2023 & rated 95 points: From magnum. Now we are talking. This is a beast, with a bright ruby color and a garnet rim. Powerful and perfumed nose of red fruit, just a hint of sous-bois. Opulent and open on the palate, balanced with a great acidity. Persists for a long time in the mouth. This is excellent and worth your attention. (508 views)
Tasted by dream on 7/20/2023 & rated 97 points: This wine is slowly starting to reach maturity although it’s still quite youthful but what a glorious Burgundy it’s become! There is a rich concentration of spicy cherry fruit and a spectacular floral/mineral lift that makes the wine just soar on the palate. There is still plenty of structure here but the velvety fruit is so complex and delicious and the mouthfeel is layered but also crunchy. The finish sports beautiful notes of minerals, sweet earth and violets. The proverbial "iron fist in a velvet glove." Simply stunning tonight and perhaps even some upside with more bottle age. Wow! 97+ (859 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 2/10/2023 & rated 88 points: The weight of a grand cru wine without any of the charm. Dark rather than red fruit. (1390 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 9/7/2022: Curious showing. Astonishingly youthful, tightly wound, and ungiving. Hard to believe this is nearly 30-years-old. Dense, tight, powerful. Freddy needs a minute to stretch his legs here. Visibly dark and concentrated in the glass even. Gives up a little more on the nose towards the end of the night but not much improvement. NR - High potential I guess but showing 90-91 now. (1671 views)
Tasted by yuti1225 on 5/27/2022 & rated 92 points: ALL Musigny Night (Taichung, Taiwan): The nose is the least pronounced one in this flight. It has some blackberry and clove, with a hint of sous bois. Again, blackberry leads the palate when the wine touches the tongue. Afterward, the dried cherry with nicely integrated tannin dominates the mid-palate. However, the flow is immediately abrupted by a bitter finish. Therefore the palate is somewhat disjoint and fragmented. Really love the Mugnier of post-2000 much more. 92pt

『In the mood of Leoš Janáček』 (1709 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 11/20/2021: Wedding Anniversary Celebration (Acquerello, San Francisco): Opened 2 hours earlier. Surprisingly deep ruby, in fact, quite a bit more saturated than a Rousseau Chambertin in the glass next to it. Lots of high toned, mature perfume, wafting red fruit, and the barest hint of green. You can't really capture a wine like this in words, but suffice it to say complex, balanced, silky, sappy, and long. Everything is perfectly weighted, it is amazingly youthful at age 28, and there should be no issue with this wine seeing its 40th birthday in fine form. Great Burgundy, and interestingly, much better than a bottle 5 years ago. (2398 views)
Tasted by Alex G. on 8/27/2021: Gorgeous! A stunningly clean, pretty, and seductive wine. I guessed '93 Vogue as it didn't quite have the character I associate with Mugnier, quite a surprising reveal. This was a stunner that bested the '98 and '99 Mugnier today, and a hair better than '93 Vogue -- i.e. #2 today behind the otherworldly '52 Bouchard Musigny. (1774 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 6/4/2019 & rated 90 points: Jasper Musigny. Slightly advanced, but decent fruit underneath. Undernourished wine. (2695 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 3/27/2019 & rated 93 points: During a Paulee dinner, so only brief impressions. Could not keep up with the top wines of tonight. Dark fruit, brooding, not really singing. (2858 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 12/4/2018 & rated 94 points: Chalky nose initially but opened up with time. Initially light stewey notes on palate, but this cleaned up. Reasonable acidity on finish (2002 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 7/15/2018 & rated 92 points: Tight and not yet well integrated. A rather aggressive bottle on the finish. Not clear where this is going. 92- (2183 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 4/21/2018 & rated 92 points: FWE gala. Attractive. (2241 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 2/9/2018 & rated 94 points: Jasper Mugnier. Very pretty and delicate aromatics, but either the wine or this bottle was beginning to tire. (1807 views)
Tasted by BradE on 8/30/2017: Sadly this bottle was flat and uninspiring. Not DOA, but simply lifeless. (2158 views)
Tasted by BradE on 6/22/2017: For me many of the 93's are still too tight, but this was a gorgeous bottle that was fully ready to drink. Loved it, and a pleasure to drink along side the 01. (2252 views)
Tasted by dream on 6/1/2017 & rated 97 points: A simply stunning red Burgundy that's just entering its drinking window. This is classic Mugnier with a very finely-grained dense character that is contemplative rather than in-your-face. Very pure and sappy with a great cherry perfume and excellent acidity. This is such a complete wine that I could see it being perfect one day given its balance and grace and its perfect middle palate. Finishes with a very fine complexity with notes of minerals and floral spices. 97+ (2008 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 5/30/2017 & rated 95 points: Becoming approachable but the acid appears to be fading more quickly than the tannins. Rich dark fruit. Still needs another 8 years and should emerge as a better wine if it can maintain its balance. (1585 views)
Tasted by Edclr on 3/25/2017 & rated 99 points: Hard to imagine a better bottle but there's always a hope out there. This is everything one could ask for in an old Burg. Some bricking around the edges, still primary red fruits, silky texture, really long finish. Just a mouth coating texture. Blew away the 90 Prieur Musigny served alongside. But was nicely followed by 85 Dom…and preceded by 2012 Chevalier Montrachet. Also an 03 Corton Pougets. Great lunch. (1840 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 12/22/2016: Two Vintages of Mugnier Musigny (San Francisco): Even ruby throughout. Some secondary perfume and dark fruit, but the more it sat out, the more it showed somewhat stalky notes and cooler green menthol aromatics. Medium weight, not particularly silky, still seems young and not completely evolved. Second time tasted-not as good as in 2010 and overall disappointing and well short of ethereal given the expectations for this great cru. I wonder if it will always have a harder edge. (2164 views)
Tasted by nikos on 11/24/2015: Color was still black and at first the nose needed to be coaxed some. We decanted and came back to this later. Opened a bit after an hour. Deep rich and expansive. clearly a great wine that still needs 10 to 20 years. Amazing. I find most 93's open for my taste so I was quite surprised. (2825 views)
Tasted by ricknat1 on 2/19/2015 & rated 98 points: This was the epitome of Musigny with an amazing nose and flavors that could not be beat. The flavor is explosive, red fruit, smoke and floral notes come together with great precision, perfect balance and overall are as good a Musigny gets. The 99 we had with it was almost as good but its 99ness (which I love) made it just shy of the perfect typically of the 93. Will last forever. this was the best bottle yet. Double decanted and left open for 90 minutes before drinking. (3183 views)
Tasted by reichken on 7/19/2014 & rated 93 points: Very nice nose of earthy red fruits, not a ethereal musigny as it was a little more 93 than moose, good bottle not great (3330 views)
Tasted by ricknat1 on 3/29/2014 & rated 96 points: At first this was out of balance but int he end it was the best of the 93s we tasted. big, powerful, balanced and elegant. (3359 views)
Tasted by Pacalet on 8/7/2013 & rated 95 points: Dark red in color, still very youthful, nose of menthol, dark red fruit, undergrowth and spices. Big palate, full of energy yet with great balance. Powerful yet not overboard, starting to drink well and will be ling lived. A big and well made Musigny. (4259 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
