Tasted by paulst on 2/5/2024 & rated 87 points: Plummy damp basement nose; deep fruit without good balance; round washed out soft finish. (702 views)
Tasted by paulst on 1/18/2024 & rated 97 points: Sweet berry nose; soft, layered, rich and structured; broad mid palate; rather short finish. (781 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 1/9/2024: Smells a little savory but lots of full fruit to it, vwry round. (856 views)
Tasted by GuanYu on 3/18/2023 & rated 93 points: Ripe raisin, pink grapefruit, sandalwood and vodka. Wine in prime now. Well made and complex. Very New World. (1727 views)
Tasted by Amerique on 3/12/2023 & rated 95 points: rich, delicious full-bodied dark strawberry fruit with forest floor and mushroom flavors, excellent structure, long finish, one of the best Marcassin Pinots (1406 views)
Tasted by cch1966 on 1/21/2023 & rated 96 points: In the beginning a little shy on the nose. Showed flavors of strawberry, cherry and herbs after 5 minutes. Well structured and balanced Pinot. Smooth long finish. (1377 views)
Tasted by advinm41 on 1/15/2023 & rated 94 points: PnP. Ruby/Garnet in color with nose of strawberries jelly, cranberry, bing cherry, tilled earth, caramel and rose petals. Palate is outstanding, medium to full body, delicious red fruit, caramel, forest floor, mushrooms and balanced acid with fine tannins giving long peppery finish. Amazing! (1253 views)
Tasted by rosenst1 on 11/24/2022 & rated 92 points: PnP. Medium deep red.Complex nose of spice and dark fruits. Lovely on the palate with intense flavors, thick texture, and long finish which shows some spice and perhaps oak influence. Quite good but not great QPR, even from the mailing list. (1486 views)
Tasted by Senso-beak on 11/24/2022 & rated 93 points: Thanksgiving 2022. Opened and decanted/let sit for 3 hours. Youthful to ready. Broad nose of toasted deep reds - pomegranate, grilled strawberry, hoisin, red cherry, vanilla, Full bodied, hiding the potency well. Luscious, rich, fruity and smooth. Yes it's a big pinot. Classy. Finished with expansive freshness and briars, cherry notes at the last sips. Agree with @rosenst1 that these have become too expensive and we've been priced out of the mailing list, and just flipping them doesn't seem ethical. Fortunately we have several bottlings in the cellar that will last a good long time. (877 views)
Tasted by cadamson on 11/21/2022: While in no danger of being over the hill, I definitely see no further growth and would start drinking up over the coming handful of years. Quite good, albeit very big for a pinot. Soft, flavorful. (989 views)
Tasted by phol on 11/12/2022 & rated 93 points: Very nice in the beginning but after some time in the glass the wine transforms in to something to sweet and a little bit to much of every thing. Very new world Pinot but fun to taste any way. (854 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 10/21/2022 & rated 90 points: Open that bottle - Jason chooses 2010 Marcassin pinot noir (Dan's house): Pop and pour, drank about 1/3rd of the bottle over 2.5 hours. The nose was initially a tantalizing mix of flowers and scorched earth. The palate has many liqueurish qualities, blackberry liqueur, cassis, cherry liqueur. It didn't take long for the alcohol to become noticeable on both the nose and the palate. There's plenty of fruit here, and two other tasters weren't bothered by (or couldn't even detect) the alcohol, but it was a big detractor for me. If this was served blind, I don't know what I would guess, but it probably wouldn't be pinot noir. To me, Marcassin straddles the fence between acceptable and over the top, some bottles land on one side, some land on the other. For this wine, the plusses and the minuses result in the score indicated. (1239 views)
Tasted by I'd Rather Be Drinking Wine on 10/20/2022 & rated 96 points: Open THAT Bottle - at Dan's! (Dan's House): Love Marcassin! One of the best producers in CA, if not the world, at. least for my palate.....just wish after 15 years, I could get on the list! Thank God for friends! Is it big? Hell yes! Tons of fruit, lots of dark cherry with notes of cedar and spice. Creamy mouthfeel and also shows some blackberry and some slight cocoa notes too. One person thought it was alcoholic, but I couldn't detect any heat/alcohol at all.....just luscious red and black fruit with some cream......when asked if I would have pegged this for a pinot blind, I hope I would have, but looking tan objectively, I could have mistaken this for a creamy Sangiovese at first, but I think would have eventually figured big, creamy Pinot! Easy 96 points and typical Marcassin! Loved it! 96+ with no reservations! (1377 views)
 Tasted by europat55 on 8/7/2022 & rated 93 points: Nose: 93-94; Palate: 93; Tasted blind. (1173 views)
Tasted by Alfaro on 8/4/2022 & rated 96 points: Never tasted a Pinot like it! (1215 views)
Tasted by rosenst1 on 6/24/2022 & rated 93 points: Taken out to a dinner with friends. PnP, Medium dark red/purple. Wonderful nose of blackberry, cherry and both red and black fruits. Rich and dense on the palate with a bit of heat on the finish. This showed really well at age 12. (1203 views)
Tasted by Melli on 5/20/2022 & rated 96 points: Always a star...did not disappoint. (1288 views)
Tasted by huntinpagan on 3/2/2022 & rated 95 points: Purchased direct from winery. Popped and poured.

Medium garnet color tending toward translucent. Slightly reticent nose of bing cherries, raspberries, light smoke and earthy tones.

Medium bodied with a nice touch of fresh acidity. Dark cherry and boyesnberry fruit, hint of five spice and earthy forest floor. Really balanced and layered flavors. Smooth and polished tannins. Long finish (45 seconds +). Finish mirrors the palate.

A great example of Marcassin pinot. Firing on all cylinders. Drink or hold. (1545 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 2/15/2022 & rated 95 points: Wonderful complexity on the nose and palate with red cherry, raspberry, and hint of asian spice with a vibrant structure and long finish. Paired beuatifully with Osso Bucco at Old City House. (1405 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 12/14/2021 & rated 93 points: Early dinner gathering (Capital Grille, DC): Served blind. Expressive youthful nose displaying concentrated sweet black fruit, blackberry, black cherry, blackberry jam, cinnamon and earth. Excellent concentration, silky and polished, sweet fruit, medium acidity, earthy mineral, and a long concentrated sweet black fruit driven finish. There is noticeable heat at the end. My guess is the 09 or 10 Marcassin but didn’t mention to anyone. Definitely a domestic Pinot. (2156 views)
Tasted by VinoDiver on 9/3/2021 & rated 100 points: Solheim Cup 2021 Weekend - Inverness Golf Club - Toledo, OH; 9/3/2021-9/6/2021 (Toledo, OH): Outstanding pinot. Bigger than I remember it being yet wonderfully in balance. Even with boldness it did not overpower the chicken corn chowder it was paired with. It worked nicely with the sweetness of the fresh corn, saltiness of the bacon and the homemade sourdough croutons. (2188 views)
Tasted by dsimmons on 8/1/2021 & rated 97 points: One of if not the best pinot ever. Drank at a group tasting. Elegant fruit flavor profile. Wonderful balance. Al round delicious. drink or hold. (2522 views)
Tasted by dafmd on 4/11/2021 & rated 95 points: Decant 60 min; ruby; dark berry notes; reticent nose at first light berry pinote; medium bodied; silky smooth texture, sweet berry and cooking spice; leisurely lasting wonderfully balanced finish (2267 views)
Tasted by shaferguy91 on 2/3/2021 & rated 93 points: Decanted for 1 hour. Really was surprisingly good. (2516 views)
Tasted by rcb25 on 12/24/2020: Well made,, but clearly a big wine right from the start. Heavy oak influence, with some pretty fruit, but needs a couple more years in bottle to resolve itself. If you want to drink it now, almost certainly decant it for 2+ hours. (2262 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
