Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 94.2 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 140 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by JRockEsq on 10/1/2022 & rated 95 points: Method: decanted for 45 minutes; Grassl Cru

Nose: cherry, cherry cola, forest floor, Asian spice, cedar, raw white mushroom

Palate: dark cherry, cranberry, baking spice; long finish of cedar, tree bark, light black pepper; dry; low+ very fine tannin; medium+ acidity

Overall thoughts: This wine is so expressive and quite concentrated, but it's wonderfully put together -- it's seamless; nothing seems out of place. A bit more complexity on the nose than palate, but sufficient complexity on the palate. This is an excellent wine that I think still has upside! 95 - 96 points. (1144 views)
Tasted by D'Yquembe Mutumbo on 4/15/2022 & rated 92 points: I wish that this wine lived up to the hype. Don't get me wrong, we enjoyed the rich Burgundian aromas, the lovely balance, and excellent concentration for a Pinot. But this still lacked the oomph of a wine that lands in the mid-90s or higher, it just didn't blow us away or get to the levels of the best Burgs. I would drink this again for sure, but at nowhere near the price point of where this is trading right now. (1741 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 8/7/2021 & rated 94 points: Open nose and rich palate with mature red cherry, raspberry, and spice with refreshing acidity on a long finish. (2083 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 7/10/2021: Orlando CT & Friends Offline (Fishbones): Funny to see my note from a few years ago because I took a similar approach here and had a bit of it when first served, but saved the wine for the end of the dinner as well. And much as it did then this really evolved into quite a lovely wine. It's got fruit (which to be fair is my preferred style of Pinot) but there's a lovely elegance to it. Darker and a bit restrained with some time. Lovely and quite enjoyable. (2407 views)
Tasted by schan109 on 6/25/2021 & rated 93 points: PnP and double decant before serving. Initially the nose is quite tight with some odd (plastic) smell. It opened up after 20 min, showing ripe cherry, black currant, flowers and herbs. Very fruity yet smooth. It tasted nothing like Pinot Noir in Burgundy. Bold and long finishing. (1997 views)
Tasted by dzeiger on 12/15/2020 & rated 95 points: Outstanding wine (2061 views)
Tasted by brettay on 10/21/2020 & rated 95 points: Elegant, subtle, balanced and beautiful. Red cherry, red currant, roses and loads of other flowers, anise, herbs, earth, and spicy cedar. Very complex but impeccably balanced. Really good but it forces you to concentrate and think a bit. (1839 views)
Tasted by JR1575 on 8/25/2020 & rated 99 points: It was very complex. Like camping in a eucalyptus forest and you had a cotton quilt when you look up stargazing the combination of the fruit, the smoke damp cotton herb black currrant and eucalyptus Extraordinarily delicious (1552 views)
Tasted by winestem on 7/21/2020 & rated 91 points: Pale color scared me a little but once tasted my fears were allayed! Drinking beautifully. Gorgeous, full and silky with a powerful finish that belies its age! (1662 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 6/21/2020 & rated 98 points: Coravined glass. Tasted over an hour so PNP. Light red in color. Absolutely gorgeous nose. For me it seems all about elegance, complexity and balance. Just outright lovely in all respects. You would never guess California Pinot. (1821 views)
Tasted by KenK on 6/17/2020 & rated 91 points: Entering into a second eveloution where fruits are lighter more strawberry, yet alcohol becomes more noticeable. Slightly faded, but still a very good drink. (1533 views)
Tasted by rm97 on 5/30/2020 & rated 94 points: Lovely though length a little muted (1202 views)
Tasted by andrewdodd86 on 4/25/2020 & rated 100 points: Dark raspberry and cherry, touch of orange, rose, dried herb big time, truffle, mushroom, dried leaves and tobacco.

Nose is ethereal. Transcending. Exit let’s forever, at perfect drinking peak.

It can be done differently, but not better.

Tasted by pjhr on 2/8/2020 & rated 95 points: Wow, drinking better than the previous 3 bottles. Open nose and layered palate with delicious red cherry, raspberry, and spice with perfectly balanced acidity on a long finish. In a sweet spot! (1374 views)
Tasted by slywka7 on 10/18/2019 & rated 95 points: A pop and pour. Aromas of dried cherry, mushroom, dried strawberry, radishes and touch of forest floor. Flavors of cherry, strawberry, mushroom, herb and a nice burst of earth. Ends with a 35-40 second finish with cherry and earth notes. This is very Burgundian. Improved with each sip. Not a trace a heat on this. Aging quite well but will say I have a cold cellar. Definitely not near a decline. (1529 views)
Tasted by esw423 on 8/24/2019 & rated 98 points: Spectacular wine. A little past its prime, but still drinking incredibly well. (1621 views)
Tasted by shaferguy91 on 7/7/2019 & rated 90 points: Maybe just an off bottle but this was clearly past its peak. Disappointing. (1652 views)
Tasted by andrewdodd86 on 11/10/2018 & rated 99 points: Cherry/raspberry central. Forest floor, mushroom, touch of earth. Just ethereal and gorgeous. 2018-2025 (2184 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 11/10/2018 & rated 97 points: Light purple. Decanted. Raspberry, clove, and a very pleasant touch of vanilla on the nose. Strawberries, raspberries, with amazing balance and subtle layer after layer of flavors. For me it is the balance and harmony that makes these wines exceptional. (2220 views)
Tasted by fotomill on 9/24/2018 & rated 92 points: Very delicate aromas of Korean raspberry (Rubus coreanus), boysenberry, flowers, reminiscent of some candy with a minimum amount of sweetness. Plus a touch of oak and vanilla. Medium bodied, medium ruby with some cloudiness plus a touch of brick color. (1861 views)
Tasted by shaferguy91 on 8/4/2018 & rated 93 points: A little too much raisin to merit any higher. (2001 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 7/4/2018 & rated 94 points: Continues to drink beautifully. (2042 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 6/15/2018 & rated 98 points: Light purple, nice fruit , dark cherry, savory elements, perfect balance, perfect hint of earth, fully mature, heating on all cylinders. Wow. (2091 views)
Tasted by andrewdodd86 on 6/15/2018 & rated 99 points: God that’s good. Had shed its baby fat. Zero tannin. Cherry dominated, has picked up earthy, mushroom & forest floor notes. In love. (1867 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 9/22/2017 & rated 94 points: Definitely more open than the last bottle. Quite ripe dark fruit on the silky palate and long finish, but still lacked the complexity of earlier vintages. But you have the love the last glass of a Marcassin! (2713 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
