Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.5 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 80 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by timewithwine on 7/14/2022: The Paso Robles is, as always, 100% Zin. No real difference from when I pulled a bottle in April: very much burgundy colored; classic rhubarb, blackberry, Zin funk, coffee (much more so than the last bottle) and, yes, some mocha on the finish. The tannins are smoothing out offering up a balanced but powerful wine. 14.8% alc. Some sediment. With pork barbecue (from 3 Lil Pigs). 07.14.22. Recommended. (952 views)
Tasted by timewithwine on 3/31/2022: The Paso Robles is, as always, 100% Zin. This was the second wine of the evening before heading out to St. Louis. Burgundy color in the glass with telltale rhubarb, blackberry, and a touch of mocha on the finish. While the tannins aren’t edgy they still deliver a lot of power. 14.8% alc. Some sediment. With blue cheeses. 03.31.22. (and the balance on 04.04.22) Recommended. (1115 views)
Tasted by Keelaay on 11/14/2021 & rated 89 points: Still hanging in there but getting a little syrupy. Past its prime? Prob, but this Zin doen’t do much more than mellow with age. Should have drunk a few years ago per JO’s advice I am drinking it up. (1328 views)
Tasted by blackcrowb on 8/22/2021 & rated 88 points: A nose of raspberry jam, pond water and rubbing alcohol. On the palate there is crunchy, acidic fresh fruit but an opposing back note of overripe fruit and a bit cooked. It was better than I make it sound but I find high alcohol wines not that useful at the dinner table. I feel I am getting full from the wine instead of the food. (1389 views)
Tasted by timewithwine on 5/7/2020: For this week’s pandemic virtual tasting with Ridge, we pulled one of our favorite Zins : the Paso Robles 100% Zin, one of the few Zins Ridge makes that is always 100% Zin. This is also my first tasting of the 2012 vintage. It took a while for the wine to open up despite Eric Baugher’s notes on the back that it will be best in 2018. The wine is that young. Notes of brown sugar, molasses, blackberry, bramble berry and spice, but with very little rhubarb. It’s a remarkable wine. No sediment. (We also opened a Lagier-Meredith Tribidrag 2012 following the tasting for dinner. PM did not care for it, likely due to the perceived sweetness of the Ridge that was followed by the structured and brooding L-M. 14.8% alc. With (beef) London broil. Recommended. (1253 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 6/13/2019 & rated 92 points: A really interesting and balanced expression of a variety I tend to shirk from, with balanced, textured red fruit and enough spice and licorice notes to keep it quite interesting. Would love to revisit in 5 years! (1883 views)
Tasted by MikeLovesRed on 4/21/2019 & rated 83 points: Loss of all pepper note from the pallet.

Rich red fruit on the nose, sweet and tart raspberry’s, blue fruits, and hard candy flavors across the pallet. Light ruby color, low acidity. Past peak, will pair well with foods including charcuterie (1673 views)
Tasted by MichielV on 8/13/2017 & rated 89 points: W sunday night sausage. Not bad but very much a straightforward zin. Good fruity nose, nice red fruit color on palate a bit simpler than i expect from ridge zins. Good combo with food. (3492 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 5/20/2017 & rated 91 points: 39th Annual Zinfandel Retrospective - the 2012s (R&D's): Blind. Aromas of red and black raspberry along with hints of blue fruit and pepper. Good body with sweet tannin and flavors of raspberry and red berry jam. Develops just the faintest hint of raisined fruit as it sits, but there are also floral notes that appear. Excellent. 91+ pts.

My #2, Domino's #7
Group #4, 48 pts (3519 views)
Tasted by bjschmitt on 5/19/2017 & rated 89 points: With home-made sausage pizza on sourdough crust.
Crimson, medium depth, good color to rim, aa pretty wine.
Prune (a bit more concentrated than plum), fig, and raisin nose.
Smooth on the palate, acid in balance, felt a touch of sweetness but my tongue said dry?? Nice finish. Something else lurking in the background, je ne sais quoi. Really good with the pizza. (2872 views)
Tasted by ptm on 11/27/2016 & rated 89 points: Decent floral nose - typical fruit forward Zin with raspberry & currant - relatively meager body but well-balanced - pleasant, easy to drink, but not much challenge (2943 views)
Tasted by bjschmitt on 8/7/2016 & rated 90 points: Drank this with beef tenderloin, shitake mushrooms, capri salad, and corn-on-the-cob.
Deep garnet with a touch of brick at the meniscus.
Enticing blackberry nose.
Raspberry and pepper, some nice acid on the palate, with a long finish. Tannin showed up with the capri salad (tomato/olive oil/mozzarella). Got better over time. (3157 views)
Tasted by mgstull on 2/22/2016 & rated 89 points: Nicely balanced with briar, blue fruit, a bit or raisin, and pepper. The alchohol was nicely balanced and not at all hot. (2770 views)
Tasted by pezscott on 11/17/2015 & rated 89 points: My wife rates this higher, at 92. I felt it was a little unbalanced or unresolved at the moment, but after a 2-hour decant and an hour in the glass, the oak and alcohol resolved somewhat to reveal wonderful jammy fruit. It has a very long finish, which is all the more pleasant with some air time. Would love to give this 5 more years to integrate better out of the bottle. (2839 views)
Tasted by mseeber on 5/17/2015 & rated 89 points: A few more years of life. vibrant and tannic. Concentrated fruit, strawberries, figs, black pepper, touch of oak. Weak nose, otherwise would score higher (3692 views)
Tasted by njAndrew on 5/10/2015 & rated 90 points: Dark fruit, blue berries, medium+ tannins, medium acid. A little fruit forward but had tannins to balk it up. Good bottle for a step below the Gyserville and LS. (3313 views)
Tasted by pgb67 on 4/27/2015 & rated 90 points: Dark and richer than the typical Ridge, with notes of spicy pepper, blackberry and raspberry. Has picked up weight since I last tasted it in the fall - I had tabbed it as an early drinker then, but now I say hold. (3037 views)
Tasted by wiscgrad on 4/24/2015 & rated 91 points: Agree with the pros. This is delicious right now. Everything I like about ridge zin. A bit sweet but perfect patio wine. (2604 views)
Tasted by DSP on 4/19/2015 & rated 92 points: Not one for the ages, I don't think, but really delicious now. Smooth, red/purple zinfandel fruit. (2415 views)
Tasted by bklynfoodie on 4/1/2015 & rated 79 points: JM_IS is right on...this wine is far too sweet and intensely cherry "flavored" (1786 views)
Tasted by JM_IS on 3/3/2015 & rated 84 points: Sweet. Smells of cherry and strong, but flavor is excessively sweet, although not cloying. Won't be finishing the bottle. (1912 views)
Tasted by danielbleier on 3/2/2015 & rated 86 points: Perhaps too young, came off competent if a little bland, red fruit and licorice (1779 views)
Tasted by wineotim on 2/16/2015 & rated 89 points: Very competent Zinfandel, structured, minimal oak, medium bodied, but lacks the wow factor. Expensive. (2559 views)
Tasted by CJM on 1/18/2015 & rated 87 points: Clear garnet. Plastic, leather, tobacco, cocoa. Medium to low acids, very low tannins. Blackberry jam. Medium to long balanced finish (1987 views)
Tasted by mercer22 on 10/27/2014 & rated 90 points: Graceful and confident. (2664 views)

Ridge Zinfandel Paso Robles

(Spring 2012 Ridge Wine Club notes)

Benito Dusi Ranch. The 1967 vintage was our first wine from this vineyard. It is planted entirely to zinfandel, unusual in a vineyard more than 80 years old.

Purchased by Sylvester and Catarina Dusi in 1924, the property has been farmed since the 1940s by their son Benito, the owner.

Wines from this location consistently show deep, juicy bramble fruit on the palate, along with notes of black cherry, gravelly earth, and rich chocolate.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
