Community Tasting Notes (average 89 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 71 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by ashishnag on 3/25/2022 & rated 88 points: Agree with UltraC - nothing wrong but tannins are gone. Cool nose of mushroom and earth and enjoyable but nothing life changing (761 views)
Tasted by Ultra C on 10/3/2021 & rated 89 points: Nothing wrong with this bottle, it held up well. The tannins are gone, but a hint of fruit and acidity is still there, very soft, still enjoyable. (1025 views)
Tasted by retired_and_roving on 5/4/2019: Dallas CTers visit NYC offline: The nose on this had distinct notes of green bell pepper and hint of mustiness. On the palate, dark fruited, with some of that greenness that came through on the nose and spicy black pepper. Mature and time to drink up. (2014 views)
Tasted by dpolivy on 6/10/2016: Vindredi (Ridge Cellar Night) (Bellevue, WA): Green pepper and vegetal on the nose. More savory, with meat, leather, raisin, and dried fruit. Perhaps a bit over the hill. (3100 views)
Tasted by Fiddletown Robin on 10/18/2014 & rated 90 points: This wine was stored since purchased at 68 degrees. It held up wonderfully. Yes, much of the tannin is gone, but, so is that alcohol bite. What was left was a wonderfully smooth, yet, complex wine with berry flavors and smokey overtones. It really pays to store your wine at a consistent temperature. I would not let it go much further, however, as the deep flavor is starting to fade. (4336 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 7/11/2014 & rated 84 points: Black fruit, herbs, sweet oak, alcohol. Not one of my favorite Ridge zins. Less bramble and more ripe fruit and alcohol. Don't see this as improving. (4242 views)
Tasted by Burgessdpilot on 12/25/2013 & rated 90 points: Very light. Very smooth. No tanins left. Good fruit. Drink now. (4430 views)
Tasted by sbfern on 11/26/2013 & rated 80 points: Misses it peak. Sad that I left this bottle to age to long. (4150 views)
Tasted by dmitchell4 on 8/25/2013 & rated 90 points: Doubt it will improve from here. (3436 views)
Tasted by SMagowan on 5/17/2013 & rated 92 points: I was very pleased with this wine. There was a nice balance on the nose of oak, fruit and heady vapors of flowers and soil. On the tongue there was a dark richness to the tannins and a hint of elderberry, soft Italian leather and licorice somehow carefully blended together. 30 second finish. Bottles that have been stored well will last through 2014 easily, perhaps to 2015. ADDITION: I vacuum sealed and refrigerated for two weeks and drank the last glass on 5/28. It was great. It's the kind of wine you want to drink with an old friend and talk about fun things you did in the past. Really liked this. (2185 views)
Tasted by FPNova on 3/4/2013 flawed bottle: Corked....what a disappointment.... (2553 views)
Tasted by brooklynJ&O on 11/23/2012 & rated 88 points: I think this is the one I had at a family dinner. Not a big zin fan but I liked this. Lighter than I expected. Nice floral quality. (1950 views)
Tasted by marcellevi on 11/22/2012: N/R. My guess is it's past it's optimal window. The nose was pretty unpleasant. However, the taste was still fairly decent. It wasn't corked and it's been stored well (the same as the rest of the case). Could be a bad bottle, but I'd suggest drink up. (1807 views)
Tasted by timewithwine on 11/17/2012: Despite pulling one of these 2 months ago, it was just too good not to drink another. Intense black plum, rhubarb, Zin funk, dusty Draper perfume and spice (perhaps cinnamon). Just a tad hot on the finish, but up to that point it is as smooth as silk and just as seamless. A touch of mocha waves from the finish. This is an intense wine without being big. 14.6% alc. With grilled lamb burgers tapenade. The wine is intense enough that it almost overwhelms the burgers, but still nice. Recommended. (492 views)
Tasted by timewithwine on 9/23/2012: Four years have passed since I pulled this wine. It’s changed a might and settled down from its brambly fruit days. More restrained with an attack of plum and more pronounced rhubarb. The finish speaks more of rose dust than of blackberry, but the mocha element is still there, but not nearly as strong as it was. The color is still somewhat primary. The depth and clarity of the deep red hues always captivate with this wine. With only 2 bottles left, I suspect I’ll wait another while before opening another in hopes of those claret like qualities Ridge Zins develop. 14.6% alc. With duck pizza. Recommended. (491 views)
Tasted by kronfeld on 1/2/2012 & rated 89 points: - Crimsom color and has flavours of black currant and prune. Round texture - Balanced and somewhat tannic. Would like to try again in a year. Black currant and faint raisin/prune nose and taste. Slightly harsh (2485 views)
Tasted by Fishboy on 9/17/2011 & rated 85 points: Good but some raisin notes. (2467 views)
Tasted by FPNova on 9/4/2011 & rated 91 points: Purple with a red tint. Red berries and vanilla with spice and a little violet on the nose. Lavishly mellow black cherry and blueberry mouth filling flavors with a tantalizing sweetness on the back end. The finish is nice and long and a bit of spice emerges midway through it. (2371 views)
Tasted by Fishboy on 7/16/2011 & rated 85 points: Good zin but not unique (2347 views)
Tasted by marcellevi on 2/1/2011 & rated 91 points: Smooth, clean. Nose of blueberries, touch of oak. Incredible balance. High alcohol, very solid yet restrained. Really very nice. (2767 views)
Tasted by jschoenau on 12/25/2010 & rated 84 points: Nice, clean, unmemorable (2844 views)
Tasted by tarheel17 on 12/17/2010: the chapstick taste is much stronger: almost plastic, with a Vaseline sense. weird, but not bad. (2996 views)
Tasted by tplskylrk on 11/12/2010 & rated 87 points: OK. Nice zippy Zin made in that Ridge way. Berry, herb, bramble, little oak, leather, dried red fruit on the finish. (3157 views)
Tasted by tarheel17 on 10/5/2010 & rated 88 points: not as graphite-filled or dusty as I remember, but still mellow and soothing. Spice notes more pronounced, along with plummy, barely pruney fruit. Lasted easily 3 nights on the counter with a cork in it. A great stand-by Ridge. 87-88 (3452 views)
Tasted by tarheel17 on 8/18/2010 & rated 87 points: well-liked by the household, this was perfectly serviceable table wine. I noticed hints of pepper, greenery and chaptstick plus some other odd aromas on the nose, though the palate was somewhat deadened. Both tannin and acidity were soft, even gentle. Perhaps it lacked "zin oomphf", but it held its poise in a fashion we expect from Ridge. $19 good buy. $28 would be pushing it. 87-88 (3547 views)

The other Ridge winery facilities are at Lytton Springs in the Dry Creek Valley AVA of Sonoma County.

Ridge Zinfandel Paso Robles

(Spring 2012 Ridge Wine Club notes)

Benito Dusi Ranch. The 1967 vintage was our first wine from this vineyard. It is planted entirely to zinfandel, unusual in a vineyard more than 80 years old.

Purchased by Sylvester and Catarina Dusi in 1924, the property has been farmed since the 1940s by their son Benito, the owner.

Wines from this location consistently show deep, juicy bramble fruit on the palate, along with notes of black cherry, gravelly earth, and rich chocolate.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
