Tasted by brasstab on 12/28/2022 & rated 92 points: Even better than last time. Elegant. Bordeaux vibes. (880 views)
Tasted by bootaylor76 on 12/24/2021 & rated 93 points: I wish I had more. Tannins were soft and elegant with nice dark fruit with a hint of cocoa. Love 2011 vintage and wish I had more. Drink up all you won’t regret it!

Tasted by SandNJ on 1/31/2021: Not as good as I was expecting (2771 views)
Tasted by GA_Seattle on 10/10/2020 & rated 91 points: Green bell pepper character on the nose, presumably due to cool vintage. Black fruit and leather fade into red berries and vanilla. Medium acid, medium finish with a distinct vegetal note. (2918 views)
Tasted by tfesmgk on 5/23/2020 & rated 90 points: A little flat. Good color & nose but didn’t get the fruit nor tannins I’ve had in the past (3162 views)
Tasted by cdp1276 on 5/22/2020 & rated 94 points: Decanted for over 4 hours before serving. Bold, complex, dried stone fruit, currant and medium oak with rather dry slate finish. (2564 views)
Tasted by RBurgundy99 on 4/9/2020 & rated 96 points: This was a real treat in these trying times - definitely my top wine of quarantine! The tannins have softened just enough but still lots of fruit left to keep things interesting. Could probably age more but no reason not to treat yourself now. (2416 views)
Tasted by cdp1276 on 3/15/2020 & rated 94 points: Decanted and open one hour and seems to be evolving. Recommend longer open time. Plenty of time left for some bottle aging. Big ripe and velvety as you would expect. (1686 views)
Tasted by Vinofitz on 9/21/2019 & rated 91 points: Always a strong bottle but at this point the fruit is held back but the tannins are still strong and a bit biting--- felt unbalanced in that way. Still flavors of tobacco and dark licorice and some dark fruit. (2025 views)
Tasted by jshufelt on 8/7/2019 & rated 92 points: Consistent with previous tasting notes. (1820 views)
Tasted by NapaCabSavLover on 7/14/2019 & rated 93 points: Birthday dinner with grilled ribeyes and friends. Ruby red. Lush, currants, coffee, hint of leather. (1830 views)
Tasted by TriBeCawine on 6/13/2019: Not as good as caymus (1706 views)
Tasted by brasstab on 12/24/2018 & rated 92 points: Who says 2011 was no good in Napa? This one was stellar. As with all Shafers. Classic. (2351 views)
Tasted by Miceri on 11/30/2018 & rated 94 points: Dark red; expressive, deep, blackcurrant nose, hint of caramel; rounded, broad and intense, slight hint of tannins, long aftertaste; powerful but still with (some) elegance (1996 views)
Tasted by wmccone54 on 11/17/2018 & rated 93 points: In spite of the challenging vintage, this winery did a great job in minimizing much of the greeness and underripness prevalent in many Cabs of the vintage. Balanced, long length, intense aromas and flavors, and very complex. A very slight touch of herbaceousness adds to the complexity. Perfect with a char-grilled steak. Solid structure will support further aging. An outstanding wine. (1828 views)
Tasted by moega on 11/11/2018 & rated 91 points: Still going strong, as good if not better than the last bottle. Smooth, medium-purple, rich and medium finish. (1837 views)
Tasted by JB12 on 5/29/2018 & rated 91 points: Reading the reviews. I decided to let this one breathe for 3 hours before drinking. I did taste a little at the hour mark. It improved and was quite decent. The fruit was even and the wine was nearly smooth to the end. The finish was long. (2998 views)
Tasted by boomecho on 5/10/2018 & rated 85 points: Aerated through a Vinturi into decanter then let breathe for 90 minutes.
Deep murky red with a pronounced cherry red rim. Luscious red berry fruit nose, some heat noticeable.
Disappointing on the palate, although quite smooth with nice berry fruits, however, no complexity, thin mouthfeel, short unmemorable finish. The wine did not improve over the evening, A lacklustre effort(compared to the 2011 Caymus SS) from a challenging vintage that is unlikely to improve with further cellaring.
Unless you get this wine as a gift, the low QPR makes this 2011 Shafer one to avoid. (2268 views)
Tasted by jshufelt on 4/26/2018 & rated 91 points: Consistent with previous tasting notes. (2270 views)
Tasted by moega on 2/10/2018 & rated 91 points: Really started to enjoy this much more on Day 2. Extremely smooth. Lots of fruit, blackberry forward. Deep purple color. Medium finish. (2224 views)
Tasted by lslayton@me.com on 1/7/2018 & rated 92 points: Spectacular, served with chateaubriand. Notes of blackberry, smooth long finish (2810 views)
Tasted by markcic on 10/16/2017 & rated 91 points: Opened and slow ox'd for 9 hours then poured through a soiree. Dark fruit on the nose. The palate was dark berries, currents, wood, red meat and a hint of vanilla. The finish was moderate to long in length and very smooth. Again a good effort from a tough year. (2742 views)
Tasted by Stevethebeav on 8/26/2017 & rated 91 points: This is a very long and soft cab. Lacks depth and complexity which would make it very special but it is very nicely balanced. Earthy notes. (2773 views)
Tasted by SMHalps on 8/17/2017 & rated 89 points: Better than most 2011's, but not up to most Shafer One Point Five vintages. A day after opening, the nose is overwhelmingly alcoholic. (2844 views)
Tasted by jshufelt on 5/30/2017 & rated 91 points: Consistent with previous tasting notes. (3376 views)

Shafer

Producer website
John Shafer and his family founded Shafer Vineyards, located in the Stags Leap District of the Napa Valley, in 1979. From the Shafers' first wine, a 1978 Cabernet Sauvignon,
their wines have won much acclaim. Today, the Shafers farm 200 acres of vineyard in the Stags Leap District, Carneros and Oak Knoll regions. Their flagship wine, Hillside Select,
is produced from selected blocks of the family's hillside vineyards and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. They also produce Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay, Merlot, One Point Five
(Cabernet Sauvignon) and Relentless (a Syrah/Petite Sirah blend), which was named #1 wine of the year by Wine Spectator's "Top 100" of 2012.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
