Community Tasting Notes (average 92.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 137 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Eriklainen on 1/1/2024: New Years. Lovely. Again. As opposed to Ridge this is more full throttle. The Napa coffee touch is there but doesn't overwhelm. It develops nicely during the evening. At the end you are left with cool black currant, unlit Marlboro lights and some mint. Aftertaste is longish. (1114 views)
Tasted by JB12 on 11/25/2023 & rated 94 points: Decanted 3 hrs. Great cab. Long lasting legs. Smooth wine with dark berry flavors. Very drinkble now. (1230 views)
Tasted by Eriklainen on 5/29/2023: Damn this is good. Almost blushing drinking this velvet, all Burgundy geeks will have a myocardial. What really gets me is the shear depth of fruit, how it holds its alcohol and never feels over extracted. Truffled cassis, some tobacco, lilacs and even some roses. Heavy as hell and not for the fainthearted. Drink two bottles and you will catch diabetes! (2017 views)
Tasted by Es7e2003 on 2/19/2023 & rated 92 points: Big, powerful, brawny wine. Medium intensity on the nose. Blackberry, coconut, tobacco and vanilla. Medium acidity and high tannins. Long finish. Better on day two. Hold. (2389 views)
Tasted by LiteItOnFire on 2/19/2023 & rated 90 points: Fun to tatse this with the 2016 Griffons de Pichon Baron. While this has more of the cassis and upfront fun, it lacks the overall depth that would have made this a much better wine- and at what apparently is a $115 wine, it is not 2x better but is shockingly solid. Beautiful cassis, spice, forest floor, earth ,smoke but it ends there. If it didn’t, this would be a much more expensive wine.

Strangely has a nose of a Chilean wine, yet doesn’t have the associated grassy notes (just a passing note of interest). The wine is enjoyable nonetheless and more so than the griffon but less complex/interesting. Made me think of what I would pay at a restaurant for a quaffable glass/bottle and would guess this would be in the $50/$200 price range. Better than a Caymus at the same price point, far more interesting and less manipulated. (2904 views)
Tasted by drmilkweed on 11/24/2022 & rated 93 points: writing this many days later, just remembering rich black fruit, light spice, cocoa, cigar. both drinking well and room to improve. (2174 views)
Tasted by VinhoVerde on 11/12/2022 & rated 91 points: Dark red/purple color. Soft fresh cassis flavor. Ready to drink, though should hold 3-4 years. Nice positive aftertaste. (2149 views)
Tasted by ThomasB99 on 9/27/2022 & rated 92 points: Sounds crazy, but this is a dead ringer for a SoCal syrah. A really really good one.
Hardly tastes like napa cab, and I mean that in the best way. (1991 views)
Tasted by swade on 6/11/2022 & rated 92 points: Smoldering dark fruit accented by vanilla. The nose was earthy and quiet. Super polished. Fine tannins still giving some grip. The best is yet ahead. 92 (2245 views)
Tasted by JazzKat on 4/16/2022 & rated 92 points: Excellent leathery and tannic. Still young! Decant decant decant! Black brooding fruits! (2406 views)
Tasted by drmilkweed on 3/12/2022 & rated 94 points: Intense, concentrated black and red fruit, umami, tobacco. Drinkable now, but miles to go. (2370 views)
Tasted by markcic on 1/31/2022 & rated 93 points: So last night as I did the week before I pulled out a 2015 and opened and slow ox'd for three hours and took it to a local BYOB to meet a business colleague. The nose is dark red fruit with hints of mocha. The palate is dark cherry, dark plums, a little cigar box, mocha and a hint of spice. The finish was really nice. A very enjoyable bottle of wine.  Tasted by Chair on 1/15/2022 & rated 90 points: Quite full-bodied with a chewy backbone and elegant finish. Drinking well. Good for 10+ years, but won't last in my cellar. (2207 views)
Tasted by SDCSR on 11/17/2021: Very good. Not a good value though. (2659 views)
Tasted by ralaspech on 9/30/2021 & rated 92 points: Similar to previous except that all the components have come together beautifully in this bottle, but maybe still a year or two to peak drinking (2707 views)
Tasted by SnobNouveau on 9/28/2021 & rated 93 points: Really wonderful full body cab with a lingering finish. (2445 views)
Tasted by Stonger the Better on 7/17/2021 & rated 92 points: This will be a 93 or 94 in a few years. Good now. Great latter. (2780 views)
Tasted by mcj2001 on 7/5/2021: Very good. (2717 views)
Tasted by OaklandWine on 6/20/2021 & rated 92 points: Deep and dark with a fair bit of oak and tobacco. There is an intriguing slight floral note on the nose, perhaps of rose. This probably could have used another 3 years in the bottle. (2501 views)
Tasted by VinoDiver on 5/4/2021 & rated 92 points: Soft rich tannins compliment nice fruit. Paired well with eggplant parmigiana. (2729 views)
Tasted by Vinofitz on 4/9/2021 & rated 93 points: Has really come into its own. Still has vibrant fruit: darker reds of cherry and some licorice. Tannins provide great structure but are rounded and rich. Long finish with more tobacco. Great Howell mountain example without being over the top aggressive. (2702 views)
Tasted by winecadence on 4/2/2021 & rated 93 points: Nice complexity. Expressive nose. Blue and black fruit, plus a little cinnamon. Plush mouthfeel. Lengthy finish. Excellent. (2143 views)
Tasted by Cuellar's Cellar on 2/17/2021 & rated 92 points: A nice balanced wine that is ready today, or you can still lay down for a year or 2. This is my last bottle so I was pleased with the wine. Opened up nicely. Cheers (3022 views)
Tasted by ralaspech on 2/17/2021 & rated 91 points: Taut red currant and blackberry flavors with a fair bit of acidity and moderate tannins. Nice mineral component with a little green savory element on the finish. Didn't really open up despite 1-2 hours in the decanter--I think this needs to sit a couple more years. (2640 views)

Shafer

Producer website
John Shafer and his family founded Shafer Vineyards, located in the Stags Leap District of the Napa Valley, in 1979. From the Shafers' first wine, a 1978 Cabernet Sauvignon,
their wines have won much acclaim. Today, the Shafers farm 200 acres of vineyard in the Stags Leap District, Carneros and Oak Knoll regions. Their flagship wine, Hillside Select,
is produced from selected blocks of the family's hillside vineyards and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. They also produce Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay, Merlot, One Point Five
(Cabernet Sauvignon) and Relentless (a Syrah/Petite Sirah blend), which was named #1 wine of the year by Wine Spectator's "Top 100" of 2012.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
