Community Tasting Notes (average 92.6 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 39 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Scapolite on 5/8/2024 & rated 93 points: Deep amber in colour with a wide rainy, translucent rim with decent legs.

Intense dried fruity tropical notes on the nose with dried candied apricots, crème burlee, honey, vanilla, pineapples, orange peels, and grapefruits.

Medium bodied with intense sweetness on the palate but quite balanced with the acidity. Creme burlee, a hint of smoke, vanilla, honey, candied apricots, ginger, and nutmeg. Lusciously sweet but not overly cloying with the acidity, this has a medium finish with the candied fruits lingering around.

Lovely. (526 views)
Tasted by sjfunkenhauser on 12/5/2023 & rated 92 points: Even though a difficult vintage, this is showing quite well. Missing a touch of intensity and precision you might expect in a knockout vintage, but still very enjoyable. Preserved stone fruit, exotic fruit, honey, vanilla and spices. A big and rich wine but with enough acidity to ensure it's not cloying. Very enjoyable.

Deep gold colour.

Pronounced aromas of peach, apricot preserve, caramel apple, mango, candied lemon, crystalized honey, botrytis, honey comb, nutmeg, ginger, vanilla, white flower and a hint of hay.

Pronounced palate.

Medium (+) body, high acidity, lusciously sweet, long finish. (1794 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 6/11/2023 & rated 92 points: Golden; aromatic, hints of saffron, peach, floral; palate is medium bodied, medium-plus acidity, medium-plus alcohol, peach, apricot; finish is medium-plus length. This would easily improve for 2 decades. 92+ (2795 views)
Tasted by up4wine on 12/31/2021 flawed bottle: Seemed like it might be a little (very little) corked. (3505 views)

Tasted by Heynetty on 12/14/2019: WSET Diploma - Class One - Grape Experience; 12/14/2019-12/15/2019: Tasted Blind

A: Pale gold
N: Pronounced Intensity. Lychees, pineapple, mango, vanilla, smoke, cloves, dried apricot, dried orange peel, ginger, nutmeg
P: Sweet, high acid, medium alcohol, full body, pronounced intensity, long finish.
Superb balance between sugar and acid ensuring the sugar is not cloying.Length and intensity are superb and complexity on this developing wine represents over 5 clusters from primary to secondary and tertiary in nature. Outstanding quality wine and the sugar and acid will keep this fresh for a long time while the primary and secondary flavours develop further.

Pretty obvious what this one was. It is ($50/bottle) (4618 views)

Tasted by DonDon on 1/5/2019 & rated 94 points: Absolutely beautiful wine. Many Sauternes are cloying and too sweet. Not this. This is one of the most balanced and stunning Sauternes i have ever had. The palate is very toffee apple and burned caramel which is amazing and without the honey and stickiness you often get because the acidity is lovely. I really think toffee apple is right here. You do get the freshness and acidity of apple but with dark caramel flavours. Loved it. Happily I have 24 if these and this was only bottle no 4! Will be interesting to see how this developes (3743 views)
Tasted by andrewstevenson.com on 6/1/2018 flawed bottle: Wine-pages Glasgow Festival of Wine Pre Offline (Cail Bruich, Glasgow): Corked. Very slightly, but it is corked.
There's a nice Sauternes behind, but it definitely feels scalped.
There's no obvious wet cardboard, but it's wrong. I've noticed before that botrytis is good at hiding TCA. (3612 views)
Tasted by RajivAyyangar on 1/30/2018 & rated 83 points: IMW Bordeaux Tasting - 2013 Vintage (Hyatt, San Francisco): Nice toasted rice and VA aromatics (moderate botrytis influence with a hint of new oak). Sweet and sluggish palate - only medium acid. Not particularly heavy, but the lower acid makes it seem plodding. This is nowhere in the same league as the d'Yquem. (3767 views)

Tasted by Phenol73 on 11/20/2016 & rated 94 points: (Decanter FWE 2016) :: Alongside the '05 & '10. Tried the Suduiraut after the Coutet, and found them more feminine and less dense and concentrated. Real elegance in these wines. TN: On the nose, lots of slate, white flowers and some nutty tones. Rich and fleshy palate; complex and enchanting with a persistent finish. Tremendous. (3562 views)
Tasted by "Rhône Rider" on 8/30/2016 & rated 94 points: Super! Rik, frisk med ananas, aprikos, nøtter, ingefær. Frisk intens, lang og konsentrert. 94 (2003 views)
Tasted by chatters on 7/19/2016: working with wine 2016 seminar 2 - sweet wines (Hilton Hotel, Sydney): Very slightly funky with the wild ferment element more obvious which lends a cheesy note on the nose. Then apricot, apple and marmalade, sweet spice. On the palate it's juicy, fleshy, and sweet by extremely powerful when compared to the Barsacs. A little front of mouth and mid palate grip. Obviously still very young. Finishes with orange marmalade and apple compote married to cream and slight vanilla. Long and broad. nice and readily drinkable despite it's youth. (3673 views)
Tasted by phol on 6/21/2016 & rated 96 points: It tastes like apricot, pear, peach and honey excellent lovely, oily texture, super nice (3474 views)
Tasted by yofog on 4/2/2016: Extremely rich and weighty, and with noticeable oak, I think this needs more time to come into focus but shows serious promise. (3551 views)
Tasted by dhammer53 on 2/20/2016: Tasted this and the '09 at the Robert Parker event in NYC. Besides being very sweet (even for me), it tasted as if someone poured a bag of sugar into the wine. I couldn't even drink this. (2872 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 2/1/2016 & rated 96 points: A superb wine! Luscious textures, fat, rich, honeyed tropical fruits and vanilla, and candied lemon peel on the nose. Sweet and spicy on the palate, with a beautiful, fresh, honyed tropical fruit, vanilla and candied citrus rind finish. (3528 views)
Tasted by partylikeakennedy on 1/31/2016 & rated 94 points: These guys could bottle a cat turd and I'd still say it was fantastic. (2336 views)
Tasted by Purple Tooth on 1/31/2016 & rated 97 points: The richest Sauternes in the house for 2013. Richhhhhhhhhh, loooong, and FAT! Succulence to glue it all in and frame it in tight! This is ready to drink now! DRINK or HOLD... For me, this wine either hits hard or misses, and this time, it lived up to its pedigree once again and hit really hard! (2986 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 1/30/2016 & rated 89 points: 2013 UGC Bordeaux Tasting (Bently Reserve, San Francisco CA): Rich moderately aromatic nose, slight orange marmalade; palate is full bodied, medium acidity, a bit of depth to the fruit with orange, orange peel; medium finish. Good effort, though falls short given its reputation. 88-89 (2504 views)
Tasted by bestdamncab on 1/30/2016 & rated 93 points: Union Des Grands Crus de Bordeaux San Francisco. Nose of orange, mango, honey, and spring flowers, more of the same on the palate, rich mouth filling fruit, sweet, tasty, needs 3 years to peak, big body, long, long finish. Retail $70. (2069 views)
Tasted by RajivAyyangar on 1/30/2016 & rated 85 points: UGC Bordeaux Tasting - 2013 Vintage (Bentley Reserve, SF): Well-balanced nose (fruit, botrytis, savory/waxy/non-fruit notes). Not super aromatic. Lighter on the palate than other Sauternes. 8.5. (2700 views)
Tasted by acyso on 1/27/2016 & rated 93 points: UGC 2016 (Chicago, IL): Suduiraut has always been one of the fatter Sauternes to my palate, and this one is no exception. This is still showing a little bit of a bubble gum note on the nose, which I'll chalk up to being just put in bottle. Very rich on the palate, and the acidity is only moderate, but the immense stature and richness seem to be able to carry on without it. This stuff is already so delicious, why bother aging it? Chateau Suduiraut Sauternes Bordeaux France

Just down the road from Yquem, is the large, beautiful estate of Suduiraut, 40 km from Bordeaux. On the left bank of the Garonne, Comte Blaise de Suduiraut built the this noble and aesthetically brilliant Château that is replete with stunning gardens designed by the very famous Le Nôtre. Suduiraut is one of the great wines of Sauternes, reknowned for their aromatic complexity and wealth of exotic flavours. The Château’s privileged sandy soils are well-drained and layered with gravel. In September misty mornings are followed by warm afternoons that allow for the development of botrytis cinerea, or noble rot. This in turn delivers the rich and distinctive taste of sweet but balanced wines kissed by honey and marked by lively acidity and opulent textures.

Christian Seely is the managing director of Château Suduiraut. He and his outstanding team are dedicated to the complete success of the Château. Their experience of assemblages of Sémillon (90 %) and Sauvignon (10 %) offer a full-bodied wine of a beautiful gold colour with amber tinges. The wine lies in wooden barrels for 18-24 months. This Sauternes displays harmony, power and marked complexity.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Sauternes

Le Grand Crus Classés de Sauternes et Barsac 1855 (Crus Classés de Sauternes et Barsac) - Read more about Sauternes, Barsac and its wines
– Read more about the 1855 Sauternes Barsac Classification

Forty kilometres south of Bordeaux, Sauternes is an AOC that includes together 5 communes, including Barsac. For centuries, humans have been patiently learning to master this region's climate, soils and grape varieties. But Mother Nature did a good job laying the foundation. The Sauternes terroir is distinguished by a geological predisposition to gravel and pebbles that cover limestone streaked with veins of clay. In the communes of Fargues and Sauternes, a layer of hardpan (iron-oxide cemented sand) in which vines flourish can be found. The vineyards at the highest elevations and farthest from the river have the best terroirs and produce the majority of the Crus Classés, including the monumental Château Yquem.Sauternes wines are made from Sémillon (80% of vines planted) and Sauvignon (15%) grapes. A bit of Muscadelle occasionally is used to give the wines an untamed touch. Sauternes have an "aged gold" colour that is denser and darker than other dessert wines. When they age, they develop a stunning amber colour. The nose has aromas of flowers and fruit that melt together to create a bouquet of remarkable complexity and balance. The primary aromas include almond, quince, mango, pineapple, stewed peach, dried apricot and passion fruit. There are also floral notes, with touches of linden, acacia, mimosa and honeysuckle. And as is typical with Sémillon, there are also notes of beeswax, almond and hazelnut. In the mouth, Sauternes wines have a powerful style that is viscous but extremely elegant. Its strong sweetness is captivating. Finally, its aromatic finish is something that simply must be experienced.

2013 Vintage Notes:
"the extractive ratios in th[is] year are in the phenomenal range and there's ripeness/botrytis to cover two treks around the globe [...] so appealing is the immediacy of the wines. Many can be enjoyed now for their sheer joy and delicious nature. [Some] should also age" - Jon Rimmerman

2014 Vintage Notes:
"a golden vintage for Sauternes. It may not have the depth or weight of 2010, but it has some of the richness. What has set 2014 apart is the intense lime and lemon flavors that cut into any overblown cloying character and allow both the fruit and the honeyed noble rot to sing." - Wine Enthusiast
