Community Tasting Notes (average 92.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 169 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by MicklethePickle on 4/10/2024 & rated 92 points: Opened last night. Opened last night, finished today. Very dark color, and viscous, throwing a fine sediment. Attractive nose of red fruit, minerals, and iron. Lots to like here, and seems like it could continue on, and perhaps even improve, for many years, as firm tannin is still in place. 5-13-16-8: 92/100. (369 views)
Tasted by redz on 12/14/2023 & rated 91 points: I wasn't as wowed as others. coravin'd over 3 nights. Decant might help. (860 views)
Tasted by dfusina on 11/12/2023 & rated 92 points: Excellent. (959 views)
Tasted by Grinner on 11/4/2023 & rated 93 points: 25th Annual Lyon 10 Year Retrospective (Lyon Down Inn): Nice mix of red and black fruit supported by iron/mineral and herbal notes. Structure more obvious on day 2 =92pts. (986 views)
Tasted by DizzyOneCheck on 9/15/2023 & rated 94 points: Really excellent, and tremendous value for the $50 price point. Rich, layered, deep, wonderful balance of fruit - principally blackberry and plum but hints of raspberry, black cherry, and bramble - balanced with mouthcoating tannins and just enough acidity. Secondary notes of tar, pepper, and maybe green olive, but mostly just a remarkably balanced and delicious red blend with layers and layers of depth. Gave it a 2 hour decant, and it was still opening and evolving in the glass. (1073 views)
Tasted by davidrh1 on 3/25/2023 & rated 94 points: Dense and velvety, big flavors of blackberry and licorice. Delicious. (1595 views)
Tasted by libero on 3/15/2023 & rated 92 points: A very good, smooth, dark red blend. (95 views)
Tasted by wdcwineguys on 3/4/2023 & rated 93 points: Great bottle. Cork was in great shape. Black cherry, black licorice, boysenberry. Full bodied, long finish. A great wine for the price. (1335 views)
Tasted by baucoin on 12/16/2022: Decanted 2.5 hours. Seems about right. About a 94 for smoothness. Would try again in 2025. (1461 views)
Tasted by libero on 5/16/2022 & rated 93 points: It has been improved a lot in the last 5 years ago. (2334 views)
Tasted by vandal16 on 3/20/2022 & rated 93 points: Very busy Sonoma Red Estate blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (45%), Malbec (30%), Petite Verdot (12%), Carmenere (5%), Syrah (4%) and Merlot (4%). Beautiful dark purple color. Lovely aromas of ripe berries, currants, plums, leather and coffee. The plush pallet features those same dark fruits along with hints of black licorice and graphite. Sweet and toasty oak shines through on the long and silky finish. Bright acidity keeps the wine fresh tasting and well balanced. Outstanding! (2229 views)

Tasted by Mr. Magoo on 1/29/2022 & rated 90 points: 2013 Vintage. Decanted and had at M&B's. (1996 views)
Tasted by clayh55 on 10/17/2021 & rated 93 points: Excellent red blend. Balanced tannins and moderate acidity. Abundant black fruit notes and a voluptuous nose (2352 views)
Tasted by neurovino on 10/15/2021 & rated 94 points: A favorite napa cab, dust and all. Worth the price. (1865 views)
Tasted by Justinwine on 9/25/2021 & rated 93 points: Sensational red blend. In prime window , though most likely 10 years of plateau and maturity ahead. (1796 views)
Tasted by AlejandroAcostaPolo on 5/29/2021 & rated 93 points: Great wine, still evolving, tannins are still firm. Drinking now quite nice but I’ll be waiting till 2022 to drink next bottle. (1952 views)
Tasted by chanote44 on 5/2/2021 & rated 93 points: Smooth and delicious. (1896 views)
Tasted by Sugarb on 3/16/2021 & rated 93 points: Still a little early in its drinking life, but the pieces are definitely in place. The structure remains sturdy, but the tannins have started to fade a bit, and it did not require a long open before pouring - no decant. I foresee at least 5 more years of good cellaring for appropriate development, and then 5-7 years of good drinking. (1753 views)
Tasted by HorstPeak on 2/13/2021 & rated 93 points: Open bottle 90 min before the first glass, great black fruit, and long finish (1780 views)
Tasted by libero on 11/8/2020 & rated 93 points: Delicious blend, smooth and big mouthfeel (2124 views)
Tasted by travelculture on 10/4/2020 & rated 92 points: A very good wine, and perfect to drink at this point. It benefits from some air or a brief decant. While a blend with 30% Malbec, it tastes like a Napa Cabernet. Good fruit, and tannins are complementary. My criticism is that the alcohol at 15.5% shows through and adds a hot taste. Best with robust dishes. (1930 views)
Tasted by libero on 9/26/2020 & rated 92 points: GREAT BLEND ! (1800 views)
Tasted by Justinwine on 9/26/2020 & rated 93 points: My heart is breaking. Only three bottles remain out of 36. An all time favorite at under $50 per bottle. (1652 views)
Tasted by libero on 6/20/2020 & rated 93 points: Ready to drink. Dark red color, this blend reached the bull eye. (2108 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
