Tasted by Brolawa on 4/21/2023: U3. A little celery and light on fruit but still has depth. PNP at Iconiq. (831 views)
Tasted by KenK on 4/1/2023 & rated 88 points: This was just ok, well balanced and quite drinkable, but also clearly faded and a bit of a dry earth character. Drink up! (901 views)
Tasted by cubswinws on 8/20/2022 & rated 91 points: Still in prime shape. Oak in balance and nice fruit structure. (1376 views)
Tasted by leachriscellar on 11/26/2021 & rated 90 points: Decanted 6+ hours, still going strong. (1733 views)
Tasted by junetoaugust on 7/2/2021 & rated 94 points: This was shockingly alive, perfect cellaring def a factor. This displayed layered fruit flavors with a touch of licorice and herbaceous notes. Wine was consistent and kicking for 2 hours of enjoyment before starting to fade completely into tertiary flavors. So much more to be said, will be hunting for more of these.
--------------------- Detailed Notes--------------------
Despite the bottle appearing to have just come off the bottling line, I was very fearful of a DOA situation; so, I opened the bottle about 30 minutes before dinner. A quick taster confirm that we had an amazing wine before us with dark red & black cherry notes meeting me as I approached the glass. Given the success of the taster decided against any decanting or changes that could impact the wine, also really minimal sediment it appeared the wine had been standing for a couple weeks. In the glass a charming aged red ruby with some brick coloring as you swirled, again a lot more vibrancy in the color than one would guess. First glasses provided additional cheery notes, hits of plum, a touch of licorice sweetness, mint, herbs, allspice and other herbaceousness. On the palate there was a delightful vanilla, cherry licorice sweetness that was so silky and devein cutting across the other flavors. Wine is still capable of completely mouthcoating and demands your full attention with the medley of flavors, finish is full and extended to the next sip. Wine really started to fade after about 2 hours opened and became completely tertiary flavored focused for the final glass.

Rarely do I look up ratings, but was too curious given the age. In 1995, Robert Parker gave this wine 95 points, which I have to say I totally agree even 30 years in. However, he did say to drink over 12-15 years and with proper cellaring these still have years ahead. At least Wine Spectator just said drink after 1997. lol (1897 views)

Tasted by dave kammerer on 8/1/2020 & rated 90 points: Excellent bottle, perfumed nose with fine fruit. Still holding up after 20 years! (1947 views)

Tasted by bestdamncab on 10/26/2019 & rated 98 points: Magnum Birthday Party (Yan's China Bistro, Walnut Creek, Ca.): Magnum Birthday Party, nose of black cherry, mint, herbs, allspice, pepper, and a touch of bell pepper, same on the palate, big body, rich fruit, mouth filling fruit, elegant fruit, and a long, long, flavorful finish and aftertaste. Uploaded 2 magnum photos. (2291 views)
Tasted by larrybbaldwin on 2/15/2019 & rated 93 points: This was singing. Still with ruby red glints with garnet edges. Floral notes over menthol notes in the nose it is soft and elegant in its old age. (2034 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 9/2/2018 & rated 87 points: Wines Enjoyed at Pre Labor Day Celebration and BBQ (Casa de la Mata - Chicago IL): Pleasant enough black fruit with oak-based spice, showing so much vanilla and chocolate. (2916 views)
Tasted by AlphaMikeFoxtrot on 8/26/2018 & rated 96 points: Silver Oak from back in the day. This is holding up beautifully. Intense ripe red and dark fruit. Tasted blind and everyone called an 8 - 10 year old Cab. Cedar and eucalyptus. Some tannins and full bodied. It’s a shame Silver Oak’s current offerings aren’t anywhere near this good. (878 views)
Tasted by tomlee on 1/6/2018 & rated 91 points: Violet in color. 13.5% ABV. Pristine nose of red fruits, licorice and graphite. Incredibly elegant. Holding up well with ample fruits and mostly resolved tannins. Currants, black cherry and anise on the palate. Medium length on the finish with chalky tannins. This was out of magnum so I would say that the wine in this format has aged beautifully. I suspect regular bottles might be on the decline. Regardless, just a great example of what a master the late Justin Meyer was in the wine cellar. Drink soon. (2814 views)
Tasted by PDavisMarble on 11/25/2017 & rated 96 points: Decanted for 20 minutes. Moderate sediment. Deep crimson. Camphor, mint, and cedar with a hint of moist earth. Starts with chocolate and mint, then cigar box and toast, finishing with an explosion of blackberries and blueberries that lingers for a long, long finish. This was the best bottle of the case. Thank goodness for patience. This could age for a couple of more years, but is in a perfect drinking window. (2572 views)
Tasted by TinMan on 7/29/2017 & rated 95 points: Classic Napa Silver Oak and drinking VERY well at the moment. Dark ruby red color and balance black earth, rock, dark fruit, and minerality... (3006 views)
Tasted by PDavisMarble on 5/30/2015 & rated 93 points: Slight brown rim to deep red. Earthy, tobacco and saline nose. Some cedar. Bittersweet chocolate that moves to camphor, mint, cigar box and finally currants. Long finish. Justin Meyer did it again. Sad what SO has become when this is what it was. (5285 views)
Tasted by jbean007 on 1/27/2015 & rated 90 points: I'm pretty much aligned with others on this one. Nice nose of vanilla, with distinct red cherry and a touch of cedar on the palate. A bit on the thin side but still full of flavor. Oh, BTW, it still drank quite nicely on day 2 after vacu-sealed overnight. I would drink soon but holding OK for now. (5331 views)
Tasted by PDavisMarble on 8/30/2014 & rated 90 points: Crimson with a tinge of brown at the rim. Funky nose that blew off after 20 minutes. Evolved to tart raspberries and semisweet chocolate with tarragon and roast meats. Top notes were tart red fruits with a subtle undertone of currants and grilled bread. This bottle was sliding down the other side. Still nice, but past the peak. (5082 views)
Tasted by levinml on 2/20/2014 & rated 90 points: Making a concerted effort to drink wines listed as outside their drinking windows, and this is a perfect case in point. Still drinking OK, with that distinct Silver Oak taste intact. But definitely thin and much less than it probably was 10 years ago. My fault. If you have any, drink soon. Still good, but fading. (5681 views)
Tasted by ewineguy on 1/24/2014 & rated 90 points: We enjoyed a bottle of 1991 Napa Valley Silver Oak. I got this bottle act auction a while back. It was very good. The color was dark and almost a chocolate hew to it. I opened it 2 hours before dinner but did not decant as it was a large format. First whiff was very promising with a floral big black fruit thing going on. Maybe some plum or chalk smell. In the mouth, it was pretty acidic. The first could sips had a bite to it. I would also say there is a slight bit of oxidation going on. If this was stored properly for all these years (Always a question when you buy from auction), this one is reached and possible past its prime. I have one more and will be drinking it soon. (5302 views)
Tasted by spirosp on 12/28/2013 & rated 89 points: Cedar, oak and medium red fruit with some residual acidity. Tannins gone but so has the fruit. Has peaked and is declining. Drink now. (3638 views)
Tasted by 82Latour on 4/4/2013 & rated 91 points: Matt's 30th!! (Casa de Matt y Anne): Rich luxurious wine. Oak, plum aroma. Light fruit on the palate, big tannins still. Wine is youthful and the finish lingers med+ finish. (4253 views)
Tasted by AustraliaManiac on 12/25/2012 & rated 95 points: A bottle of this made it all the way to Brisbane, Australia, thanks to my brother-in-law. The wine was superb. The advanced age really muted the tannins, making it silky smooth, start to finish, yet still robust. Brilliant! (3685 views)
Tasted by Cobraworld on 11/27/2012 & rated 85 points: time to put it to rest. (3383 views)
Tasted by PinotPaul on 8/4/2012 & rated 89 points: Wonderful nose of oak and residual red currant. Unfortunately, the wine is starting to turn. Slight acidic mouthfeel. Tanins are completely aged out. Very smooth. Nice finish but almost no fruit or complexity. Should have drunk several years ago. (3723 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
