| Community Tasting Notes (average 88.6 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 16 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by canan on 6/9/2022 & rated 93 points: Lovely and perfectly aged wine. Lots of aged impressions with just a minor touch of cherry fruit. Elegant and intense but still a good depth. The tannins are completely integrated and smooth. Amazingly light intensity with an excellent balance! (491 views) | | Tasted by DrStan626 on 2/21/2015 & rated 91 points: Decanted but didn't need to. Darkest purple color wine I've ever seen. Needed to breathe. (3137 views) | | Tasted by canan on 5/2/2014 & rated 91 points: Interesting and edgy wine. Quite reductive in the beginning but it opened up nicely the second day. (3457 views) | | Tasted by JLPwine on 2/9/2014 & rated 90 points: Decanted for two hours - could have used more. Beautiful nose, chocolate, spice and cherry. Nice finish. Good, but not sure if it was great. It definetly seemed to come into its own an hour into dinner. Not my favorite brunello, but did enjoy. (3481 views) | | Tasted by madia on 6/27/2012 & rated 94 points: "Open Cellar" at Wine Route Tel Aviv (Wine Route Tel Aviv): This Brunello aged lovely. It is complex and exquisite, showing red fruits, farm and earthy odors. Light bodied, good balance. Approachable. The best of the tasting. (4912 views) | | Tasted by pjaines on 9/15/2010: Young as a pup - great nose of morello cherries, spices and dark fruit - rich and deep fruit on the palate - quite firm tannins but the deepness of the fruit give this an assured and complex feel. Tannic and crunchy on the finish - really has years left yet. The palate doesn't quite match up to the nose - a touch of heat on the finish. Just peeping into its drinking window but can be left for many years yet. (4761 views) | | Tasted by Krugsters on 4/25/2010: Nice but not outstanding. Earthy notes. Forgettable. (2660 views) | | Tasted by mugginsthedog on 8/6/2009 & rated 88 points: Acceptable but slightly dull. Slightly better the next day. (3108 views) | | Tasted by winejnky on 8/13/2008 & rated 85 points: Earthy Tuscan nose, acidic and unbalanced flavors, not enough fruit. Lacking in fruit & depth, 2001 Brunello should be much better than this, which is only slightly above cheap Chianti. No better after 24 hours of air time, disappointing. (2373 views) | | Tasted by dke on 6/13/2008 & rated 91 points: Again very nice nose of flowers, strawberries and slight raw meat component. This time it was decanted for ~4 hours, with great fuller body, cherrie strawberry taste with medium tannins and medium acidity. Very nice. (again at the Friday meeting). (2092 views) | | Tasted by dke on 5/17/2008 & rated 90 points: Beautiful nose, cloves, sour cherries, floral background. Nice taste of cherries and earth, with hint of orange(?). Lacking slightly on the mid palate, finishing with nice acidity and still strong tannins. it picked up some weight after 1hr decanting. Longer decant or several more years needed. overall 90+pts, nose 92+, body 89-90. (2084 views) | | Tasted by rdma on 3/12/2008 & rated 87 points: We noticed a nice whiff of vanilla followed by a smooth finish. The tannins become much more tame with decanting. (2169 views) | | Tasted by jamieirving on 5/20/2006 & rated 79 points: Decanter Great Italian Fine Wine Encounter (The Landmark Hotel, London NW1): Made from 100% Sangiovese Grosso this wine is light red with brick characters. A porty nose is followed hints of green pepper and spice.

Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]
Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.Italy Italian Wines (ItalianMade.com, The Italian Trade Commission) | Italian Wine Guide on the WineDoctorTuscany Tuscany (ItalianMade.com) | TuscanytMontalcino Montalcino websiteBrunello di Montalcino Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino (Official DOCG website) |
