Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 87.6 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 10 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by grafstrb on 2/3/2019: -- wine opened approx. one hour before tasting (screwcap) --
-- tasted non-blind on Days 1 and 2 --

NOSE: surprising hint of petrol, which I normally would expect from a wine this young; very powdery; lychee and papaya.

BODY: striking green-yellow color; medium-light bodied.

TASTE: salty; medium-high to high acidity; dry. No fall-off on Day 2, when it's still salty with high acidity and light to medium-light petrol note. Absurdly good deal at $12 --- I went back to the store and bought all remaining bottles. gut impression score: high 80s. Drink Now and over next few years. (1221 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 4/16/2017 & rated 88 points: Lovely complexity on the expressive nose, apple and elderflower, cinnamon and peach, good depth; the palate is dry but juicy, with subtle herbaceous bitters, lovely freshness and tension; good length. Remarkable quality for a mere Ortswein. (2148 views)
Tasted by Storm1977 on 11/10/2016 & rated 90 points: Meget lys bleg i farven. Nedfaldsæbler i duft. Let pæremos og hvide blomster. Hyldeblomst. Syreattack på tungen. Syrlige drops. En anelse sødme. Mineralsk grusvej. (2122 views)
Tasted by Aravind Asok on 9/26/2016: Open for several days now. We tried this with our halibut with okra/corn/tomato, but somehow it just didn't work. Much better on its own on a hot day. On the nose, salt and citrus, with a hint of pencil shavings and white flowers. On the palate, ok acidity, with more citrus and good salinity. I though the RS worked well with the acid, but a bit short on the finish, which has a touch of bitterness. (2003 views)
Tasted by Butzemann on 7/29/2016 & rated 84 points: pale yellow colour, smells of apricot and melon, light body, not much acidity, quite a lot of residual sugar for a wine that is called dry/trocken, in the mouth and aftertaste melon, short finish, the Rüdesheimer Riesling by Georg Breuer is much better (1680 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 6/20/2016: All steep slope, all from the lower. Crisp and clean. Fermented in stainless steel so closed in stainless steel. Clean and pure, lively. REally long and mineral. BLend from the three types of soil on teh slope. (1022 views)

#2014 Vintage Notes:
2014 Vintage Report by Terry Theise
2014 Vintage Report by Wine Spectator
"My gut still tells me the Saar (and to some extent) the Ruwer are better overall in 2014 than the more storied areas of the Mosel proper, but those that spent the requisite time living in their middle-Mosel vineyards made some of the most electric and "feathery" Riesling in a long time (maybe the finest in 20 years - yes, it's true!)" - Jon Rimmerman (Of course only a very short historical memory would call the Saar and Ruwer less 'storied' than the middle Mosel - jht)

Rheingau

VDP Rheingau (Official site) | The Rheingau (Wines of Germany) | Wikipedia about The Rheingau
On weinlagen.info

The small but fine wine-growing area Rheingau offers one for the culture of the vine ideal microclimate and best soil conditions. The Rhine runs uninterruptedly almost one thousand kilometres from Basel up to its muzzle into the North Sea, in a northerly direction. With a short exception - the Rheingau. The Rheingau mountains force the river to a change in direction here. The vineyards falling in this region to the south stretch really to the sun. The king of the white wines, the Riesling, finds ideal local conditions for the unfolding of his fine fruity and elegant type of vine character on the multilayered weathering grounds with loess, loam and sand additions.
