Fairly muted nose of cherry and violets. Tannins were smooth and pleasant after a 3 hour decant. Leather, earth, cherry/red fruits. Good mouthfeel and finish. A very nice bottle but it really lacked the wow factor I expect from a $100 bottle. Still, everyone enjoyed this and it held its own in a great group of wines the 7 of us consumed on a pleasant Sunday afternoon. Well this is 10 years early, it needs some taming. I love younger nebbiolo though when I am going for a polenta so here we are. This is so compelling with a nose that changes on you by the minute and what I would rate to be a sort of immortality given the towering structure. Min 4 hours slow ox now, decant too. Very eager to see in 10 years!! Från Ravera i kommunen Novello. Klassisk men fruktig stil, 36 månader på Botti. 100% ren Nebbiolo Rosé, en druva som ger lättare, blekare och mer parfymerade viner. 14,5% alkohol.
Intensivt ljust röd. Rödbärig doft med lakrits och viol. Begynnande mognad.
Torra tanniner, sträv, mjuk frukt, fin syra, elegant, viss hetta (varm årgång) men inte störande. Första gången jag provar, gillar den eleganta och snygga stilen, nyfiken på en svalare årgång typ 13 och mer lagring. 92p
(1880 views) | | Tasted by HowardNZ on 1/1/2019: 2018 Visit to Elvio Cogno with Valter Fissore (Ravera, Novello): Made from 100% 27 year old Nebbiolo Rosé clone (Valter noted that it ripens about 10 days later than his two other clones). “The clone difference is major”, said Valter, “as well as the vintage”. A much lighter colour than the Bricco Pernice. Also, a more pungent bouquet. Perfumes, spices, red liquorice, and red berries, with a touch of citrus. On palate, clean, fresh or very intense. Also, very elegant and but it expands across the palate, growing in power. Very long. Very good but I expect I will ultimately prefer the 2014 and 2013 Vigna Elenas. Vigna Elena er kun 1 hektar stor, 380 meter over havet og ligger sør-øst vendt. Jordsmonnet består av kalkholdig leire.
På duft har vinen bra intensitet med mørkere saftige bær, noe balsamico, lær, og snev av neglelakksfjerner. Tillegg forsøker vinen å kamuflere seg med 2013-årgangens våte løv. Vinen er fyldig og tiltalende med en fin juicy stil med kirsebær og med en bra mineralsk tone. Lett balsamico også her. Tanninene litt rustikke, men kler vinen. Lang utgang. Bra utført. 93 poeng. On the palate, I found soft textures with wonderfully pure cherry, spices, savory minerals and inner earth tones. Following in the footsteps of Elvio the maestro, the Elvio Cogno winery continues to produce wines that tell the family history without altering the traditions, styles and flavours the Langhe area conjures up through the variety of its grapes. The great wines of Elvio Cogno are born in the old granaries of a farm converted to address the great challenges of winemaking. Through careful, rational vineyard management-without pushing things to an extreme or forcing, with low yields per hectare and respect for the organic balance of the vine. Valter Fissore and Nadia Cogno cultivate rigorously autochthonous varietals: nebbiolo, barbera, dolcetto, and nascetta. Cogno wines seek to transmit emotions, to be remembered. They cheer the soul of anyone who tastes them with enthusiasm and sincerity. The vines are grown in various plots within the Ravera vineyard (cru) of the Novello municipality.NebbioloNebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.
Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.
"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.
Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Due to geographic and political isolation, Piedmont was without a natural port for most of its history, which made exportation treacherous and expensive. This left the Piedmontese with little incentive to expand production. Sixteenth-century records show a mere 14% of the Bassa Langa under vine -- most of that low-lying and farmed polyculturally. In the nineteenth century the Marchesa Falletti, a frenchwoman by birth, brought eonologist Louis Oudart from Champagne to create the first dry wines in Piemonte. Along with work in experimental vineyards at Castello Grinzane conducted by Camilo Cavour -- later Conte di Cavour, leader of the Risorgimento and first Prime Minister of Italy -- this was the birth of modern wine in the Piedmont. At the heart of the region and her reputation are Alba and the Langhe Hills. This series of weathered outcroppings south of the Tanaro River is of maritime origin and composed mainly of limestone, sand and clay, known as terra bianca. In these soils -located mainly around the towns of Barolo and Barbaresco -- the ancient allobrogica, now Nebbiolo, achieves its renowned fineness and power.
