| Community Tasting Notes (average 91 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 9 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by richard.presser on 6/6/2021 & rated 88 points: Fine cool, climate Shiraz nose. Acid evident. Some spice, little bottle devt. Restrained, austere Northern Rhone. Light-Med. weight. Dictated to by the acid and some tannin. Will it develop??? Not a wine to buy going forward. Opened up somewhat after 6-7 hours. (1036 views) | | Tasted by guy12 on 5/14/2021 & rated 89 points: Clear Ruby. Closed on the nose with a hint of spice & black fruits. Palate is dry with med acidity & tannins, & more pronounced spice & black fruits. Full bodied, med+ finish (906 views) | | Tasted by WineCenturyAZ on 1/25/2019: Deep ruby in the glass with a purple core, pronounced aromas and flavors, youthful nose with black fruits and vanilla, plate is dry, blackberry, black currant, plum, toast, full bodied, long finish, tannins are high, alcohol medium. Very good quality. Enjoyable now but will continue to evolve with bottle age.
WSET 3 tasting (1552 views) | | Tasted by Aravind Asok on 8/12/2018: Pop and pour. Nice nose, showing primary black raspberry, a hint of charcoal and a touch of savory character. On the palate, acidity is vibrant and this is very lively, supporting the black raspberry and char. Finish shows a lot of very finely grained acidity. We'll see how this one evolves. (2053 views) | | Tasted by chatters on 6/16/2018: World Cup 2018: France vs Australia (Prince Sydney, 40 Hansard Street): Peppered fresh blackberries, spice, slight earthy. Juicy, drying, gritty tannins, exceedingly muted fruit. Time? (2259 views) | | Tasted by kevinleeht on 6/7/2018 & rated 93 points: Deep purple in colour. Developing with medium (+) intensity of roses, blackcurrants, blackcherries, blackcurrant leaf, vanilla, dried blackberries. On the palate it is dry with medium (+) acidity, medium (+) tannins. Body is medium (+) and medium alcohol. Flavour intensity is full and palate has same as nose and includes savoury notes and finishes medium (+). Quality is very good, good complexity and intensity. Can drink now and suitable for aging. (1540 views) | | Tasted by chatters on 3/10/2018: Rhone with Stephane Ogier (Prince Sydney, 40 Hansard Street): slightly funky with wild ferment notes and also some quite polished black berry and red cherry fruits and a touch of volatile acidity. The fruits a little sour on the palate (though this could be the VA again) and the tannins are chalky and intrusively drying. Nah. (1779 views) | | Tasted by DerSchonWieder on 12/29/2017 & rated 93 points: Black and blue fruit, pepper, licorice (the salty one), sage and spice. Delicious and an excellent value. Cheers! | Yann Chave Producer Website - Read more about Yann Chave You may not have heard of this domaine before, but it won't be a secret much longer. Chave is making superb wines. - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator Yann, 36, has taken over from his father, Bernard Chave, and in 2001 the name of the Domaine became Yann Chave. It consists of 14,77 ha (35.4 acres) of Crozes Rouge, 1,20 ha (2.8 acres) of Hermitage, 0,76 ha (1.8 acres) of Crozes Blanc. The blanc is 70% Marsanne and 30% Roussane. (2006 is the first vintage we will be able to get). The Crozes "Classique" is a selection of vines all situated in the secteur "Chassis"; ranging from 18 to 40 years. Elevage is 20% in 2 year demi-muids and 80 % in tank with micro-oxygenation. The Rouvre is a single parcel in Chassis, his best parcel of Crozes, very "caillouteux" (large rounded stones) and the vines average 50 years-old. It is pure "vin de goutte" and is aged entirely in 1-2 year old demi-muids. The Hermitage is from two parcels, one in Baumes (next to Le Méal) and the other in "Péléat" :average age 25 years. The wine is aged in 100% new demi-muids. Pumping over is done twice a day but Yann does very little punching down (pigeage)- only two times altogether during the 3 weeks of vinification. He works hard in the vineyards - low yields, harvesting later at optimum phenolic maturity, natural viticulture, indigenous yeasts and no filtering - if you like loads of Syrah fruit and lots of texture on the palate, these are wines for you.Syrah Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)
Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent. The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)
Regional History: Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.
