Community Tasting Notes (average 88.3 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 38 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Montecalvo on 11/23/2022 & rated 51 points: So young. Hard to believe. Great concentration and balance. Tannins are soft but in line with the fruit. Still more primary. (439 views)
Tasted by Montecalvo on 12/5/2019 & rated 90 points: still on the young side. (1468 views)
Tasted by rikipedia on 8/12/2016 & rated 90 points: Alc: 13%; Deep crimson to slight bricking rim.
Fairly intense tertiary bouquet with undergrowth, damp earth, warm spices, garrigue, dried lavender and smoky notes. There is an umami edge with sliced charcuterie and potpourri meet.
Medium-bodied, the entry shows a soft honey yet a firm, chamois leather texture. Mulberry flavours and date combine brown sugar, cracked pepper, and black olive.
The fruit is sweet and works nicely with the drying, grippy tannins. A long finish that shows tar, liquorice, date and sweet cherry travel sweets (almost cough lozenges) yet balanced by lively acidity and a perceived cool almost fresh note - lavender? The aftertaste also has an unusual dried apple skin and chive note?
Quite complex with the breadth from Grenache and structure from Syrah; this well-built frame contains a melée of softened cherry and blackberry fruits. (647 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 3/17/2016 & rated 89 points: Not much discolouration. On the nose old leather, dark cherries, slightly meaty, hints of shoe polish. On the palate open and generous with good ripe fruit, rather soft tannins, decent acidity and medium length. Well made and in a good spot, but no rush. 88-90 (3330 views)
Tasted by theRealPepe on 5/9/2015: Barnyard, meat, earth and olive on the nose. Palate is on the softer side, but still exhibits game, plum, violet, olive and earth, amidst its flavor spectrum. this showed very well and seems to have gained a little since tasted last. Excellent. (3603 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 7/5/2014: Old World Blind Tasting >$25 (Bin 75): Darker core with bricking; vanilla, olive, char, brine, red fruit, cedar, black pepper; lots of red fruit, vanilla, slight sandalwood, fresh acid, bright, soft tannin, sweet wood, good texture aged; probably towards the end of its best drinking window; very different from the much younger St. Cosme Crozes from earlier in the tasting. (4228 views)
Tasted by Montecalvo on 12/24/2013 & rated 91 points: still quite young but starting to develop secondary notes. (4067 views)
Tasted by theRealPepe on 6/2/2013: Barnyard, earth and meat on the nose. On the palate also a good, solid, meaty Croze. Fine for midweek meal where you don't mind capping after a glass or two. Very Good. (3675 views)
Tasted by madflyfisher on 1/30/2012: The colour is quite dark, almost black. The nose gives hints of some spice, cedar wood and black pepper but also some minty freshness to it. One the palate very expressed texture, meaty and dense. Definitely a rustic wine. Tannins and acidity quite balanced and not dominating at all. Flavours include liquorice and a little meat (perhaps even smoked meat) too. Nice, solid everyday food wine. (3236 views)
Tasted by robertek on 1/8/2012 & rated 88 points: Lost alot of its fruit unfortunately. (3107 views)
Tasted by microbox on 3/5/2011 & rated 88 points: opened and tasted 60 min later. dark ruby, 1 mm fading. nose: strawberry, blueberry, wet peat, clay, camphor, camomille (indeed), roasted maroni, still pretty much fruit-dominated, palate: med body, fine tannins (but still muscular), delicate, balanced, respectable 15 Caudalie finish with a bit of heat. this is Syrah the way I like it, although it is from the more rustic appelation Crozes Hermitage, but from an exceptional year. this is so much more appealing than the jammy Oz examples, and I feel the need to explore this further. just starting to approach drinking window. next bottle in 2013. potential to touch the 90 points (2980 views)
Tasted by cbuhlman on 9/19/2010 & rated 90 points: this wine is putting on weight and really coming together, nice N rhone nose, and good clean fruit. persistent spicy finish and overall, very elegant.
I'm beginning to think this wine is good enough to improve for years to come, perhaps another 5 years. (2985 views)
Tasted by rikipedia on 8/2/2010 & rated 90 points: Terroir-istes International - France, Rhone, Hermitage (Rodwell House): Medium ruby to narrow orange rim, the wine is slightly cloudy.
The nose shows almond, play-dough, marzipan and mineral/crushed rocks/quarry dust. There is a hint of caramel lurking.
Clearly some development; the entry shows a plum skin texture, some blackberries and black plums, marmite, roast meat and a hint of dark chocolate. Chewy with a mineral-edged acidity, the wine is medium-bodied with sweet fruit but a lovely freshness. Medium finish with a pepper edge. A nicely structured wine with some complexity even though it shows older. (273 views)
Tasted by robertek on 5/21/2010 & rated 90 points: A very solid wine that stands its grounds despite tough competition in the flight of Rhone wines. Consistent with previous notes! (3117 views)
Tasted by rhit on 5/6/2010: Camphor, strawberry and rhubarb, and booze on the nose. Flat, medicinal fruit and more tar/camphor, not much tannin in the mouth. Some heat on the finish. (2703 views)
Tasted by GGinSF on 10/5/2009 & rated 88 points: A juicy Syrah. Black fruits with a touch of spice. (3260 views)
Tasted by robertek on 7/1/2009 & rated 90 points: Primary aroma of rather strong blueberry with follow-on cassis. As the wine is exposed to air, herbs, meat and some peppry notes show-up and confrims the shiraz it is - although not so strong on the nose. On the palate - lots of fruit but also tannins that are fairly nicely integrated. Now also some smokiness showing up on the nose. A likable and really good wine. It has not developed in 9 months since I last tasted it. (3319 views)
Tasted by Riezin on 4/12/2009: Nat cork. A dark red-purple, opaque, juicy. A dark nose - damp earth, dark fruits, but generally indistinct. Full bodied, some spice, a bit meaty. Just a hint of heat but not unpleasant. Still nicely structured, a big wine. Got more interesting over time and was quite enjoyable. Very cohesive and well integrated. Went great with a grilled buffalo steak. Good. (3341 views)
Tasted by robertek on 9/26/2008 & rated 90 points: I like this wine. Very pleasant nose with intial loads of dark fruit and meat which after sometime in the glass opens up and offers more depth. On the palate it is very pleasant but with well rounded tannins but rather short. I believe this wine will improve over the next 2 years but not for as long as I would have thought. It will be interesting to follow over the years as I finish the case. (3450 views)
Tasted by JeffGMorris on 2/17/2008 & rated 90 points: Rednecks & Rhones Chave-a-thon. Thrown in as a ringer, this showed quite well - a testament to the strength of the 2005 vintage in the Northern Rhone and to the imporvements in quality at Yann Chave over the past few years. Rich purple color in the glass. Drinks young but very well. Gives the impression that it may be showing it's best now, but no reason to think it will start to fail any time soon. Lacking the depth of most of the JL Chaves but a really nice bottle of wine when judged on it's own. 50+12+12+8+8 = 90 (3780 views)

With the next wine, the crowd becomes a bit touchy, for while the label says “Chave” it lacks the requisite “Jean-Louis.” Grumbles that someone is getting a little “legalistic” with R&RR rules are heard about the room. Who in SamHill, a shirt-tail cousin of TomHill, would substitute a $50 Yann for a hun’rd dollar Jean-Louis, for cry’n out loud?! Someone trad’n on trust and understanding, that’s who! Someone who knows how to manipulate words and understand’n. Now why the room’s eyes settle on me, I do not know, but a damn curious feeling takes ahold of me. But hell, they drank it nonetheless.

Yann Chave Le Rouvre Crozes Hermitage 2005
100% Syrah. This is an odd juxtaposition of Old and New World showing its cigar tobacco, cedar on the one hand, but also candy apple. A velvety, sexy mouthfeel. Very young, but not too young to open. Someone remarks that, “This is a classic Brad Harrington wine; rich, warm, somewhat California-like Syrah.” (Damn, that boy was good ‘cause Brad had picked out this wine!) A bit of heat on the finish, but not so much as to make it off putting. This will last 5 years, but 15 would be only a hope. 13% alc (250 views)
Tasted by cbuhlman on 2/5/2008 & rated 90 points: notes similiar to last, but just felt it was overall a bit better esp. as it relates to the finish, which I thought was quite strong (3696 views)
Tasted by Ben Andersen on 12/24/2007: I've had this wine about five or six times now, including once at the winery in May 2007. It's a dense, substantial Crozes, with nicely ripe - yet typical - dark, slightly pruney fruit. Elements of prune, plum, cassis, with undertones of tar, light earth, tobacco and cocoa. Well-structured, old school Northern Rhone Syrah. I would assume this will age well in the short-medium term. Impressive. (3881 views)
Tasted by J-Sho on 12/8/2007 & rated 91 points: 90-91. Still very young. Nose with spice, cigar box, earth and dark brooding fruit. Broad shouldered wine aka very structured. On the palate with good minerality and fruit that came together with some moderate complexity. Present but unintrusive tannins. Nice extended finish. Drinks well now but likely better in the next 3-4 years. (3801 views)
Tasted by danstrings on 9/30/2007 & rated 89 points: La Strada, nice and fresh, lighter than remembered last time, but solid and a good juicy Crozes. (3938 views)

Yann Chave

Producer Website - Read more about Yann Chave
You may not have heard of this domaine before, but it won't be a secret much longer. Chave is making superb wines. - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator Yann, 36, has taken over from his father, Bernard Chave, and in 2001 the name of the Domaine became Yann Chave. It consists of 14,77 ha (35.4 acres) of Crozes Rouge, 1,20 ha (2.8 acres) of Hermitage, 0,76 ha (1.8 acres) of Crozes Blanc. The blanc is 70% Marsanne and 30% Roussane. (2006 is the first vintage we will be able to get). The Crozes "Classique" is a selection of vines all situated in the secteur "Chassis"; ranging from 18 to 40 years. Elevage is 20% in 2 year demi-muids and 80 % in tank with micro-oxygenation. The Rouvre is a single parcel in Chassis, his best parcel of Crozes, very "caillouteux" (large rounded stones) and the vines average 50 years-old. It is pure "vin de goutte" and is aged entirely in 1-2 year old demi-muids. The Hermitage is from two parcels, one in Baumes (next to Le Méal) and the other in "Péléat" :average age 25 years. The wine is aged in 100% new demi-muids. Pumping over is done twice a day but Yann does very little punching down (pigeage)- only two times altogether during the 3 weeks of vinification. He works hard in the vineyards - low yields, harvesting later at optimum phenolic maturity, natural viticulture, indigenous yeasts and no filtering - if you like loads of Syrah fruit and lots of texture on the palate, these are wines for you.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

### 2017 vintage ###
"The first red wines already tasted in the Northern Rhône promise a beautiful vintage, with a quality close to the 2015 or even the 2009 vintage" - NEWRHÔNE MILLESIMES
