Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 93.5 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 23 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Rywyine on 12/23/2023: Drank this with steak and it was decanted for about a bottle of champagne at dinner. Beautiful red fruited/cherry nose. The palate had a fantastic mouth feel. Cherry, ripe strawberries, savory. Mineral finish. Tannins poking out at the end but with steak they weren’t an issue at all. Just enough ugh acidity. Great wine. (1426 views)
Tasted by Esmags7 on 9/29/2023 & rated 95 points: 4 hour decant - absolutely booming, needs that much air.

Massive, black fruit, lots of mineral. Pair with lamb.

Stellar, and not subtle. Still young. (1478 views)
Tasted by rpfaffjr on 8/5/2023 & rated 97 points: Fuligni never disappoints me. I think my first of their Riservas. I can't be sure if it's better than an Annata for any given vintage, but if the price is right, like this was, can't hurt to step up to it. As Tim Heaton wrote in a TN on 6/23, "I'll plan to drink my remaining six bottles in the coming ten years - even if it can go longer than that, and still be good/interesting.". Will do same with my 4 reaming. And maybe buy more. (1803 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 6/29/2023: With pigdaddy. This PnP was allowed to breathe for ~ 30 minutes prior to service. As good as this wine is, it was always a step behind the very fine company. I'll plan to drink my remaining six bottles in the coming ten years - even if it can go longer than that, and still be good/interesting.

Tasted by finlero on 3/24/2023 & rated 95 points: Stellar after a four hour decant, and not a minute sooner. This is tightly wound stuff, tastes quite traditional to me. Garnet. Big, but balanced: black cherry, leather, minerals, a bit of smoke. Still very tannic, with an extraordinarily long finish.

Great with food like any BdM, but this one is best on its own.

This has all the elements to hold for at least another decade, but it's into its drinking window with ample air. Fuligni has seldom punched me in the gut the way it seems to for the pro critics, but this was by far the best I've had from this house. (2344 views)
Tasted by hadukla on 7/20/2022 & rated 95 points: A very well made wine. Very delicately balanced, complex, smooth. Beautifully long finish. Perfectly drinkable now. Tasted alone first then with 60-day aged rib-eye (2792 views)
Tasted by MattMauldin on 6/6/2022: Favorites - 2022 Wine Spectator Grand Tour - Las Vegas: Exotic aromas of cedar, leather, eucalyptus, currant, melted stone. Rich and round palate, with great elegance and precision. Expressive fruit with total secondary integration. Very finely structured and long. (WOTF-1) (3105 views)
Tasted by miadelt on 12/24/2021 flawed bottle: Flawed. It feels like it was exposed to heat. Such a disappointment. (2409 views)
Tasted by melvinyeowq on 12/2/2021: Brunello with some roses: Another modern Brunello. This had greater depth than the Il Poggione, but showed the warmth of the vintage more at the same time. Firm tannins but the fruit balanced it out on this one, very good. (2617 views)
Tasted by brianofthevine on 8/18/2021 & rated 94 points: Oh wow...this is good, albeit still young. Red cherry, strawberry, and red plum. Still pretty tightly wound with notes of spice, leather, tobacco, and red licorice. Firm acidity and tannins with a great long finish. You can certainly open one now but I think this will warrant another few years to lay down. (2678 views)
Tasted by rylanreynolds on 12/30/2020 & rated 93 points: Very tasty bright fleshy cherry, raspberry donut filling, minor in leather. Tannins still present yet well balanced acidity. (2668 views)
Tasted by JGinMO on 5/14/2020 & rated 93 points: Exceptional. Still young, but with an hour in decanter I thought it was drinking quite well. Viscous mouthfeel, a bit of bloody meats, great depth. (2598 views)
Tasted by belfast taxman on 1/2/2020 & rated 90 points: Madness, infanticide, but NYE demands something special in our house. This wine has a lot of potential but far too early to judge. Decanted for a couple of hours but still closed and brooding. There is dark cherry and alcoholic liquorice on the edge. Tannins moderate but definitely there. I will now leave for a few years, maybe five. (2948 views)
Tasted by RussK on 5/27/2019 & rated 91 points: Russk. Wine Spectator Grand Tour. 91- pts (3226 views)
Tasted by Goodwine4ever on 5/20/2019 & rated 97 points: Wow tasted it today and this is truly an amazing wine !
So much depth, layers of dark fruits and amazing freshness and the final is LONG, gotta say this is one of the best Brunello ive taste in my life and its only a Baby right now. Congrats ! (3108 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 2/20/2019: {winery} Wow, is this ever special. A big, fleshy Brunello with a river of fresh acids, silky tannins, copius layers of red fruits, and a grand final. This is drinking incredibly well now with aeration in decanter, or can age for decades. Buy more than you can afford. Totally brilliant. very highly recommended

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
