Tasted by Es7e2003 on 8/21/2023 & rated 92 points: Deep ruby in glass. Medium plus intensity on the nose. Plum, meat, tar and violets. So elegant and light on its feet. Well integrated tannins. Great example at a great price. (585 views)
Tasted by jlhkiss on 5/15/2023 & rated 93 points: Funky, rustic, and sharp, this was layered, textured, and overall quite lovely. We decanted 1-hour ahead of dinner but this still needs more time to resolve some of the tension. Drink 2025-2035. Technical score: 93. Enjoyment score: 93. (649 views)
Tasted by orwines on 7/3/2022 & rated 92 points: A syrah lovers Syrah (1183 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 3/12/2021: This opens up with a dirty nose of farmyard, tar, smoke, green olives and dark fruit. With air, the dirty notes slowly dissipate. Great purity of fruit on the palate, this is quite dark, marks of pepper, olives, smoke and tar. Really good complexity already, plenty of character and sense of place. Serious, manly St-Jo. Worth seeking out for sure. (1656 views)
Tasted by forceberry on 7/3/2020 & rated 93 points: Made with biodynamically farmed grapes, 80% destemmed. Fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. Aged for 11 months in old (2–6 yo) oak casks (92% pieces, 8% 400-l demi-muids). 13% alcohol.

Youthful and very deep blackish red color with subtly blueish overtones. Permits rather little light through. Classic, clean and wonderfully perfumed Northern Rhône Syrah nose with aromas of sweet black raspberries and brambly red raspberries, juicy boysenberries, some fresh blackberries, light floral notes of violets, a little bit of cracked peppercorns and a gamey hint of raw, bloody meat. At first the nose feels slightly tight, but opens up quickly, becoming more seductive by the minute. The wine is dry and ridiculously juicy on the palate with a supple, medium body and vibrant flavors of ripe blackberries and succulent boysenberries, some black raspberries, a little bit of meaty umami, light sanguine notes of iron and a hint of cool, stony minerality. The structure relies mostly on the high acidity, whereas the ripe tannins feel very soft and textural, contributing more to the firmness than to any tannic grip. The finish is long, gently grippy and quite noticeably bitter with a rather pronounced streak of sour cherries and tart lingonberries, followed by juicy flavors of ripe blackberries and boysenberries, some stony mineral tones, a little bit of sanguine iron, a savory hint of meaty umami and a touch of peppery spice.

A very beautiful, tasty and eminently hugely drinkable Northern Rhône Syrah. Although I prefer Syrah wines with a bit more tannic action, I'm not complaining: the emphasis here is on the balance, accessibility and purity of fruit, i.e. the wine definitely isn't tightly-knit or sauvage in any way. The wine is very drinkable and so very enjoyable already now, but seeing how very youthful, primary and fruit-forward it is at the moment, I can imagine it will continue to improve for years more. I'll probably wait for another 4-6 years before returning to this, just to see where it goes with age. Priced according to its quality at 26€. (2236 views)
Tasted by kuumies on 12/6/2019: Markedly volatile/animalistic on the nose that speaks very clearly of its origins: pure, bright blackberry fruit, iron and stony notes. Extremely attractive aromatics. On the palate it is quite perfectly proportioned. Medium-bodied with high acidity and silky tannins. Super juicy, just classic as hell with huge drinkability. A very complete wine. (1758 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.
