Community Tasting Notes (average 90 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 2 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 1/15/2019 & rated 90 points: Love the dark, inky aromas of blackberries, plum sauce and currant paste, with mint and spicy elements. Deep and inky on the palate but zesty acidity, so it feels velvety. Great core of tangy black fruit, laced with spicy anise and mint, floral incense, coffee. Many, many years ahead here. (508 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 5/28/2018 & rated 90 points: Virginia Governor's Cup Wines: Rich purple color. Deep, big aromas of concentrated blackberries, tart cassis, with eucalyptus, mint, magic marker and some woody-cedar notes. Concentrated and young on the palate with stiff tannins (serious grip) and medium acidity. Blackberry fruit, plum skin, tart cassis, with complex notes of incense sticks, eucalyptus, graphite, anise. This needs a long time in the cellar but the quality is obvious. Includes 10% Merlot, aged 16 months in 20% new French oak. (750 views)

Varietal character (Appellation America)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
