Community Tasting Notes (average 91.4 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 23 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by SimonG on 10/11/2023 & rated 88 points: Mid to full straw. Lovely mid weight with a lanolin and subtle peach kernel nose. Mid weight, very smooth. Finishes well but lacking complexity though the mid palate — more about harmony and smoothness, and lacking a little detail and precision. Very drinkable. *** (463 views)
Tasted by lim.calvinb on 10/8/2023 & rated 93 points: Opens up about 30 minutes after p pouring into the glass. Good complexity, peach, yeast hay. Great long finish, good acidity, excited to see this wine age (337 views)
Tasted by Irish_Wine on 8/16/2023 & rated 93 points: Rich, expressive, layered nose. Toasty peach and mango. Spiced honey, lemon pith and beeswax. Almond biscuit notes. Full bodied on the palate with great concentration. Sustained rich, savoury finish. Lovely. Drink now or hold.

WSET Notes:

Pale lemon.

Pronounced on the nose with peach, lemon pith, mango, toast, cream, vanilla, nutmeg, beeswax, honey, chamomile, smoke, biscuit and almond. Developing.

Pronounced and dry on the palate. Full body, high alcohol, medium acidity, long finish.

Can drink now but has potential for aging. (471 views)
Tasted by Mark1npt on 6/6/2021 & rated 93 points: Ha-ha.....opened this for Carol pre dinner with the kids and she and my son finished off most of the bottle. Rich Semillon fruit...I cannot improve on the last note here which was incredible in its details. Thanks to Forceberry for that! Carol did something very out of character for her.....she made me get online and hunt down some bottles for her own personal stash.

The only difference I noted was the oak had not integrated much in this bottle...or perhaps it just wasn't open to air long enough? (3486 views)
Tasted by forceberry on 11/17/2020 & rated 93 points: The grapes are sourced from three vineyards, planted in 1902, 1936 and 1942. Fermented spontaneously and aged for 14 months in barriques (90%) and concrete eggs (10%). No MLF. 13,7% alcohol, 2,3 g/l residual sugar, 5,0 g/l acidity and pH 3,38. Tasted in a Boekenhoutskloof Sémillon 2017-2005 vertical.

Youthful, pale yellow-green color. Fresh, bright and quite dry nose with aromas of tropical fruits, some creamy oak tones, a little bit of sour apple candy, light herbal notes of currant leaves, a hint of exotic spices and a touch of hay. Compared to my previous experience with this wine 1½ years ago, the oaky tones have shifted to the background and the overall feel has lost some of its sweetness. The wine is ripe, youthful and lively on the palate with nuanced and even somewhat crunchy flavors of ripe golden currants and Golden Delicious apple, some notes of beeswax and just general waxy richness, a little bit of apricot, light notes of hay, oaky hints of savory wood spice and creaminess and a touch of stony minerality. The wine shows good sense of complexity and the overall feel is enjoyably dry and savory despite the obvious ripeness. Balanced, moderately high acidity that lends good sense of balance and structure to the wine. The finish is long, dry and quite acid-driven with savory flavors of spicy red apple, golden currants, some hay, a little bit of exotic spice, light waxy tones, a hint of nectarine and a touch of creaminess.

An enjoyably balanced, structured and fresh Sémillon that effortlessly combines ripe tropical fruit and creamy oak tones to enjoyably dry and fresh overall taste, balanced acidity and crunchy fruit tones. The wine has gained quite a bit of finesse and sense of harmony since I last tasted it, but seeing how youthful the wine still is, I can imagine this will continue to improve for years more. Most likely this won't be peaking within the next 10 years. All in all, a lovely and harmonious vintage of Boekenhoutskloof Sémillon and perhaps my favorite of these younger vintages. Priced according to its quality at 38,89€. (2930 views)
Tasted by Fat1Wombat on 10/17/2020 & rated 92 points: Nervous about this wine given how soft the cork was when opened.
Medium straw.
Lifted lemon grass and fresh toast. Toast from both the subtle oak and developing Semillon flavors.
Rich well structure palate. Fine acid. Nice length and texture with more toast, citrus and lemongrass.
Lovely wine. (2019 views)
Tasted by Genghis88 on 10/7/2020 & rated 91 points: My first time opening this bottle, and I was impressed.

Light lemon in color,
Scent of wet wool, lemon hints, grapefruit, and honey dew
Well balanced. Mild acidity. Mineral notes. More light lemon, and a slight hint of vine. Longish finish. An excellent wine for the price.

This producer makes good wine. Their Cabernet is even better. (2334 views)
Tasted by MalcolmV on 9/9/2020: Wool, lemon, sage, and thyme on the nose. Vinous, textured, waxy, lemon pith and grapefruit with sage and thyme. Some bitterness on the finish. A yellow rather than green expression. Still an infant!

Tasted by Pontifax on 9/4/2020 & rated 94 points: Well....Labour Day weekend ...
I am indeed spoiled ....I have 3 bottles of this left, supposedly to " age" .
But....life is short.
Once again, consistent notes on palate from August 31st.....but this bottle is leaner and more focused on mineral notes , on top of ALL above notes ....a gem.
A great companion to potato salad and cold chicken on this hot evening (1190 views)
Tasted by Pontifax on 8/31/2020 & rated 94 points: Bottle #3 of this gem.
ALL of the tasting notes from 6 months ....but with added range and complexity after a 3 hour decant .
Further flavours of fennel, tarragon, a ghost of vanilla and white pepper, added to the range of citrus and fruit notes.....as it warms up further a spicy note of tiger lily , clean new oak( pefectly woven into the mix), and tart pears......and at HALF the price of a 2013 ch.de Fieuzal blanc tasted recently ....similar profile!
A great companion to Sea Bass or Salmon Wellington. (919 views)

13,5%. Kjempebra éndrue-semillon (870 views)
Tasted by Mark1npt on 3/5/2020 & rated 92 points: First bottle of this SA producer.....very pleased. This is a rich, creamy old vine Semillon. Peach and citrus front end, nice weight in the mouth with a great acidic structure throughout. It's the acidic backbone that keeps this from getting flabby. Oak is prevalent but in good balance. Splitting the bottle between 2 over dinner with chicken and a spinach, white cream butter sauce, it goes very well and by the end of the meal makes you wish there was a 2nd bottle. (2367 views)
Tasted by Pontifax on 1/23/2020 & rated 93 points: A landmark old vines South African wine.
On nose:smoke, fresh apple skin and nougat.
On palate : all of the above flavour notes, in addition to a complex , layered array of flavours including quince, tarragon , hay , sea salt , notes of Seville orange and a strong( but not overbearing note of barrique oak).
As it warms up after two hours in the decanter , ripe pears and stoney minerals with a touch of charcoal ash , make themselves known....the wine shows a fine platinum/ gold colour in glass, and a civilized 13.5 % alcohol level .....this can and will age beautifully ...try again in 2023......perfect wine for Salmon , Sea Bass and roast chicken.  Tasted by forceberry on 5/19/2019 & rated 91 points: The grapes are sourced from three vineyards, planted in 1902, 1936 and 1942. Fermented spontaneously and aged for 14 months in barriques and concrete eggs. 13,7% alcohol, 2,3 g/l residual sugar and 5 g/l acidity, pH: 3,38. Tasted blind.

Neutral, pale whitish-yellow color. Toasty, slightly smoky and quite complex nose with aromas of white peach, some toasty oak, a little bit of red apple, light pineapple tones, a hint of beeswax and a touch of creamy richness. The wine is medium-bodied, balanced and quite youthful on the palate with rather primary flavors of fresh pineapple, creaminess, some white peach, a little bit of toasty oak spice, light mineral notes of wet stones, a hint of spicy red apple and a touch of savory wood. The wine is medium-to-moderately high in acidity; not enough to make the wine particularly fresh or crisp, but enough to keep the wine nicely structured and in balance. The finish is long, bright and tasty with youthful flavors of pineapple, some red apples, a little bit of creamy richness, light notes of savory wood spice, a hint of sweet toasty oak and a touch of apricot.

A stylish and harmonious new world wine with great sense of balance. The overall feel is still very youthful here and the wine could definitely use some further aging - now the fruit is a bit too much on the primary side and the oak influence is still rather pronounced, but perhaps some 3-5 additional years in a cellar might make the wine come together much better. All in all, a surprisingly nice and harmonious effort with good potential for further development. Although a wine made in a style I normally don't enjoy that much, I found this wine very enjoyable.  Tasted by FMRsommelier on 3/14/2019: Robe jaune clair aux reflets dorés. (810 views)
