Community Tasting Notes (average 93.2 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 44 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by hoservin on 2/24/2024 & rated 94 points: Decanted for one hour. Aromas of blackberry, currant, mocha, crushed rock and spice. Blackberry, currant, licorice, mocha, crushed rock and spice on the palate. Very long, layered finish. Full bodied. Served with reverse seared porterhouse and a red wine sauce. (616 views)
Tasted by michigan dogs on 12/17/2023 & rated 97 points: I had this wine 18 months age, same restaurant, same friends. I rated it 98pts then and 97 tonight. Excellent, big dense dark fruit, well balanced- really great wine for an average vintage. Both of my ratings are well above other posters but I'll stick with an excellent rating- not sure what others are getting. (1177 views)
Tasted by greg@newsomehh.com on 6/25/2023 & rated 93 points: aLL FAMILY DINNER IN jTOWN (1575 views)
Tasted by Yack Man on 1/13/2023 & rated 93 points: Very much like previous bottles, dark purple blue fruit, blue and blackberries, currants, and some tobacco. Solid fruit, but not ‘booming’ or impactful as previous III G vintages. Despite the challenges of this vintage, many of the 2017 Cabs are showing much better than I would have expected. This is a very good wine that more of a 93-94 point wine, but not as good as I would have anticipated. (2155 views)
Tasted by sonodoc on 8/6/2022 & rated 94 points: I wasn't sure what to expect with this wine, given the wide range of opinions in the reviews so far. Blueberry was the most obvious taste for me, along with some other red fruit flavors. It was smooth and enjoyable as a pop and pour when taken to one of our local restaurants, and it paired nicely with my coffee-encrusted venison, but perhaps lacked the boldness, complexity, and excitement of other vintages of this wine and of some of my other Napa Valley favorites.  Tasted by cab blends on 7/29/2022 & rated 91 points: Blind tasting at home; 7/29/2022-7/30/2022: 2 hour decanting

Probably the most disappointing of the night (after the unveiling).

Clearly young with only a light nose (maybe the wine is asleep and closed at the moment)

Dark and thick red in color.

After 24hrs - the youthful acidity in the finish clearly shows.

Tasted by michigan dogs on 4/25/2022 & rated 98 points: Perfect. that was my impression while drinking with Mike who agreed. Took to Oak and Reel (best restaurant in Detroit). This wine was so good despite imperfect preparation as it was in a hot car all day while travelling to Grandkids soccer games and only getting a short decant at the Restaurant. Glad I have an additional bottle. Best wine in a long time. My experience was so different than all other posters. (2360 views)
Tasted by Whisky&Wine on 4/22/2022 & rated 91 points: Intense blueberry pie filling flavor on this one. It really dominates. Not super complex or nuanced. Good showing for a 2017 but certainly not the same caliber as other vintages. Enjoyable, if a bit of a one note wine. (1973 views)
Tasted by Papillon1112 on 3/18/2022: Not a true representation of G3 vineyard or Mike Smith wines. Finding the '17 are hit-or-miss. (1995 views)
Tasted by Yack Man on 1/6/2022 & rated 93 points: A good wine that starts off muted, showing very little. With some air, the flavors began to come around and show. Dark berry fruits, cassis, and modest extraction but nothing like the best examples of this appellation. At the end, a good wine but not as spectacular as the 2013 and 2016 vintage on day one. 92+/ 93 Points. (3104 views)
Tasted by Decanting Queen on 12/15/2021 & rated 93 points: I have no idea why I opened this so young, but it has really improved from my last bottle March 2020. Really nice rich dark fruit, a touch of tobacco, tangy acid. Really delicious but will get even better. Be more patient than me. (3813 views)
Tasted by TastesGoodToMe on 11/12/2021 & rated 92 points: Decanted 2 hours. I love the '16 vintage. This was good - but nothing like 2016. (2304 views)
Tasted by Justinwine on 10/5/2021 & rated 93 points: I really like the vineyard. Lush. (2153 views)
Tasted by BinVA on 5/29/2021 & rated 91 points: I expected much more from this but it came up a little short. It’s very good but the wow factor was missing. All fruit forward with no rough edges to pull it together. (2641 views)
Tasted by DrBad on 12/29/2020 & rated 89 points: Drank over several nights, Coravin pour the first night and 1 hour decant the second, drinking over 2-3 hours with not much difference between the two nights. Some decent parts but nothing comes together with this wine. Much of MSU's notes are spot on: menthol aroma, sweet over extraction on the front, lacking mid palate action, mint and licorice on the finish are pleasant but the wine finishes off with a lingering bitter taste. (3557 views)
Tasted by NapaCabernet on 12/28/2020 & rated 96 points: Opulent, fascinating „out of this world“ fragrants. Reminiscent of summerberries with lots of violets and lavender, as well as strawberries and mocha-plums. Nice density and a good finish with integrated tannins and a subtile hint of acidity. For this vintage just phenomenal!
My first george iii.
Decanted for 30min then back to bottle. Looks like best in a year or two and will last for another 5-10.
96-97p. (2966 views)
Tasted by JLuch1 on 11/3/2020 & rated 92 points: Decanted this for a couple hours and drank the second half of the bottle on day 2. Same conclusion that I preferred this wine on day 2. I probably should have forgotten about this bottle for a few years, but instead I sacrificed it versus tempting myself with an 18.

Still very much a big wine with predominately Black cherry/berry fruit, cedar, and a streak of earth/minerality. Sweet tannins provide a enjoyable and reasonably long finish. A really good wine, so nit picking here, but does have a bit of that grainy mouthfeel I have seen written elsewhere on the 17s. Not a big deal, but a consideration when comparing it to other Myriads of different vintages.

This site to me always falls short when compared to Dr. Crane and since they are priced the same, felt appropriate to drop my overall rating on this wine to a 93 average. (3430 views)
Tasted by Jay A on 9/3/2020 & rated 93 points: Inky, ripe, hedonistic, opulent all come to mind. It is almost like candy. Blackberry, black cassis, mild spice, graphite and cedar all come together to make a very showy wine. Lively and exuberant. Finish is long and ultra smooth (very ripe tannins). Not my typical style - it is too showy - but I like it. Drinking it young, so maybe it will settle down into a 'proper' Cabernet with some time. It does have all the ingredients. (3421 views)
Tasted by RockyII on 8/30/2020 & rated 94 points: Pnp and drank over 90 min. Deep opaque eggplant. Heavy nose and taste of blackberries, cedar, earth, ash and strawberry leaves. Medium well integrated tannins and medium plus acidity give a great mouthfeel. Really nice now and likely even better in a few years. About 94. (3226 views)
Tasted by Crawfordesquire on 8/23/2020 & rated 95 points: from a shitty vintage, this wine is well made and has a great interplay between fruit and oak. did around a 3 hour double decant. id suggest 3-5 hours. pH seems to be around 4.1 :)
drink now or within the next 40 months. (2701 views)
Tasted by CoryDean44 on 5/1/2020 & rated 93 points: I could hold the glass to my nose and take in those aromas for hours. Musk, earthy, campfire, and cedar. Blackberry, walnut, slightly smoky, with a brief pepper accent on the finish. A vibrant expressive Cabernet Sauvignon that is developing nicely. 93 points. (2987 views)
Tasted by msuwine on 4/11/2020 & rated 89 points: This ripe and sweet wine seems top-heavy at the moment, with a whole lot of fruit - but not much mid-palate or structure. I've enjoyed more than a few 2017s, but this is my second Myriad from this vintage that just seems disjointed. I am a fan of Mike Smith, big fruit, and modern Napa Cab, but this wine is currently too boozy to be that enjoyable, at least to me.

Dark purple in color and full in body, the wine offers aromas of plum, blueberry, and menthol (altogether, kind of like a cough drop). The flavors are similarly extracted, with notes of cherry liqueur, leather, and crushed gravel, with a sugary and somewhat bitter finish (like cooked bay leaf). The mid-palate is almost non-existent, as the wine drops through the mouth without leaving much of a trace. A little better on second day, but it still seemed jammy. 14.8% alcohol. Hold until 2022, and hope / pray for the best. (4944 views)
Tasted by Decanting Queen on 3/14/2020 & rated 90 points: Even on day 2 this is much too tart to drink now. Needs much more time. (4126 views)
Tasted by Arottenstein on 1/9/2020: Good. Very young. Night 1 is all red fruit with a finish that has some coconut, clove, and a hint of greenness. Will update on night 2 (3576 views)
Tasted by Yack Man on 1/4/2020 & rated 94 points: Good stuffing composed of ripe dark reddish purple fruit, blue and blackberries, black cherry, currants, anise note and a hint of tobacco. Solid fruit, but a tad less impactful than previous III G vintages which is surprising in my opinion. Earlier vintages of Myriad III G’s have been very impactful on the palate and senses, big and fruit driven, full of flavor, wines that I drink sooner rather than later. Despite the challenges of this vintage, many of the 2017 Cabs are showing much better than I would have expected. This is a very good wine that I would score 93-94 points but less power than expected. Hold for now. (4309 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
