Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 87.4 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 49 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by DbertCellar on 4/27/2024 & rated 92 points: An excellent Bordeau styled wine. Aromatic, fruity, dry, mellow taste, everything you would want in a wine to go with pasta. (74 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 12/14/2023 & rated 89 points: Day 1: Commerical tasting and a shame as this used to be a good wine. Spice, strawberry and floral notes. Simple wine and just an easy pass. A bit of a chemical taste on the finish. 80 points
Day 2: Second wine from yesterday that was terrible on day 1 and came around. Too many dump them out. While this is no Right Bank Anderson level improvement it is an improvement. More balance with cherry, spice, strawberry, floral, minerals and pepper. Longer finish and more concentrated.
Very drinkable and the price I paid a good QPR. 88 points
Day 3: Again, some improvement and 2 back-to-back bangers on the 3-day experience. Sour berries, cherry, floral, minerals and mild pepper. Very drinkable and would be a good party wine. 89 points
Recommendation: This will not achieve the mind blowing experience of the 13 of this wine but solid overall. Recommended a solid 3 hour decant. (430 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 9/23/2023 & rated 90 points: Diam 10 Best wine closure ever.
Day 1: Big fan of previous vintages but this one is dull to say the least and plenty of time has passed. Blueberries, mild spice, mint, earth and floral notes. While it is very drinkable it does not even get close to the quality, but this is only day 1 so hopefully will improve. 87 points
Day 2: Nice improvement on this wine. These wines age for a long time so not surprised didn't show its best on a the pop and pour. Blueberries, coffee beans, spice, pepper, earth and floral notes. This is not a powerhouse wine and has a lot of finesse. Short to medium on the finish. 90 points
Recommendation: Decant for 3 or 4 hours or hold until 2025. (557 views)
Tasted by kmicho on 5/7/2023 & rated 85 points: Agreed with KentW below who wrote in 2022: “Medium plus weight. Plum and blackberry notes. A bit sour, and strong mid-palate acidity that stays through the finish. Just a mid week drinker. Better with food but not memorable.”

I won’t be buying this wine again. For my palate, there are many many wines better at the $20-25 price point. (846 views)
Tasted by Z1nnfull on 11/2/2022 & rated 89 points: A story of bottle variation...
Our 8/22 review was less than stellar, but the bottle opened this week (let it breathe quite a bit for best results) was much better.
Very nice Argentinian Bordeaux blend, heavy on the Malbec, so fruit forward and tending towards robust. Good value and should continue to slough off the rough edges in the next year or two. (1270 views)
Tasted by Thebigbaby on 10/6/2022 & rated 85 points: Has definitely settled down since the last bottle with a nice balance of fruit and acidity. Paired well with carne asada tacos. Time will tell with the other bottles in my cellar. As noted by others, so far, this vintage just does not seem to hold a candle to previous vintages that I have had. (1373 views)
Tasted by Z1nnfull on 8/2/2022 & rated 85 points: We've had numerous vintages of this and the variation between vintages is significant. All three varietals are part of either/or left /right bank Bordeaux. Despite all afternoon breathing, it was a bit more rough than we would expect, with the Malbec overtaking the Cab and Merlot...very dark and up front black fruit. Tannins definitely still a bit sharp. Still a decent wine, just less approachable than prior vintages that were smooth and elegant, which this is not. Would serve this with grilled and/or spicy fare. (1423 views)
Tasted by Kentw on 1/30/2022 & rated 86 points: Medium plus weight. Plum and blackberry notes. A bit sour, and strong mid-palate acidity that stays through the finish. Just a mid week drinker. Better with food but not memorable. (1875 views)
Tasted by DbertCellar on 10/20/2021 & rated 90 points: Plum, spice rich aroma. Some tannin, well integrated, full bodied, pleasant. (2025 views)
Tasted by vaenoke on 9/25/2021 & rated 87 points: Deep Ruby to Medium purple colour. Black cherries, dark plums on the nose, with notes of fig and oak spice. Samee dark fruit in the taste, along with some cranberry notes, some mint and oak spice. Full-bodied, high tannins, high acid, high alcohol. Needs some time in the cellar, so hold on if u can. Otherwise, long decantation adviced. (1677 views)
Tasted by Thebigbaby on 5/12/2021 & rated 85 points: Deep and dark in color. Nose is subdued. An almost Syrah like flavor profile (Blackberries), consistency and acidity . Has developed since my last bottle 18 months ago, but needs more time. Good value right now at $20. Interested to see if it continued to develop in the bottle. (2161 views)
Tasted by Dominic Roy on 4/20/2021 & rated 84 points: Nose: Blueberries. Truffles. Oak. High intensity.

Palate: Blueberries. Blackberries. Dry. Medium to high tannins. Medium acidity. Medium body.

Finish: Medium. (1942 views)
Tasted by Thomasrager1973@outlook.com on 4/2/2021: Not our taste (1807 views)
Tasted by D_RICH on 3/12/2021 & rated 91 points: Decant. Initial impressions: Black purple. Dark fruits on the nose. Dark fruits, very primary. With several hours of air, opens up a bit. This wine is developing in the bottle and remains very promising. Give it another couple of years or a long decant. (1506 views)
 Tasted by Pontifax on 11/14/2020 & rated 92 points: Well....bottle #5....LAST BOTTLE.
On nose and palate....very satisfying and consistent blend....great steak wine....look forward to the 2017 vintage. (2192 views)
Tasted by corkscrews on 10/17/2020 & rated 91 points: A nose of brooding dark fruit and spice, dark black purple in color. A full bodied red blend with blackberry, cassis, some bitter chocolate and spice on finish, needs a decant. www.winelx.com (1719 views)
 Tasted by Pontifax on 10/11/2020 & rated 92 points: Canadian Thanksgiving....bottle #4.
A very open , rich full flavoured New World blend...my previous notes tell the tale!
Good value at $26.00 in Vancouver. (1793 views)
Tasted by Pontifax on 9/15/2020 & rated 92 points: So....another bottle of this New World gem.
Consistent notes on both nose and palate since May, with a softening of the oak component , and a push forward of the berry and black currant notes ...a big , full flavoured wine....but with the tannins and clean acidity to keep it focused and fresh as a great pairing with steak and lamb...can age for another decade. (1864 views)
Tasted by wcf1946 on 8/14/2020 & rated 86 points: Dark garnet color with purple highlights. Slight vanilla nose. Very smooth and balanced flavors. Subtle peppery tannins. I was expecting more complexity and depth because of the color and combo Malbec, Cab, and only 30% Merlot. Still a pleasant drinking experience w/wo food. (1873 views)
Tasted by mats13 on 7/21/2020 & rated 91 points: Huge vanilla aromas and flavors. Nilla wafer in a glass. (1508 views)
Tasted by D_RICH on 6/1/2020: Very dark purple, opaque. Nose is closed. Full bodied, concentrated dark fruit masked by tannin and acid. Nowhere close to being ready to enjoy. After 2 hours in decanter, showing just a little more. I wouldn't touch this for at least several years; if you must try it now, decant for several hours. This is a very promising wine - judgment reserved. (06/01/20) (1589 views)
Tasted by Rhollander on 5/20/2020 & rated 90 points: Great blend. Full body and full of fruit. Oak, tobacco, chocolate, vanilla. Mellow tannins. Fantastic value (1661 views)
Tasted by Pontifax on 5/6/2020 & rated 92 points: Bottle #3....perfect for Rib eye steak tonight.
Notes on par with 6 weeks ago.....
Oak is blending well with the fruit and tannins elements .
Notes of cassis , tobacco and ripe figs after two hour decant ....a bold new world wine, without excessive alcohol. (1649 views)
Tasted by DougLev on 4/21/2020 & rated 75 points: Mild with just a bit of bite at the end. (1387 views)
Tasted by Hamersly on 3/29/2020: Still rough but has the stuffing to improve greatly in a couple of years. (1489 views)

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)

NORTON
Astonished at the features of the place, and pushed by his visionary spirit, in 1895, an English Engineer, Mr. Edmund J. P. Norton planted the first vines importing them from France, thereby giving origin to what was the first winery in the area. Almost 100 years later, Austrian businessman, Mr. Gernot Langes–Swarovski, travelled to Mendoza and experienced the same fascination for the region beauty, the warmth of its people, and the excellent conditions for vine growing. By means of an innovative work system called Mapping the practice “Vineyards inside the vineyard” is applied. For that, vineyards are divided into small parcels that enable the work and individual tracking to achieve their maximum potential. The 5 farms have over 1200 ha fit for growing vine, 680 ha out of which are currently cultivated.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Argentina

Wines of Argentina

Argentina has been making wine since the 1500s, tracing its wine heritage back to Spain, France and, perhaps surprisingly, Italy. Italian immigration is second only to Spanish in Argentine culture, and the flavors of Italy show up strongly in the nation’s wine, food and cultural tradition. Historically, Argentina has kept much of its wine consumption at home, drinking most of the wine it makes. But we are now seeing more very serious Argentine wines north of the border, and Malbec is leading the movement. The wine-making region in Argentina ranges between the 22° and 42° South latitude. It spreads at the foothills of the Andean mountain range along over 2,400 km; from the province of Salta to the province of Río Negro, with a variety of climates and soils that makes each region a unique land. In general terms, the areas dedicated to vine cultivation are dry and arid with a low level of rain and humidity, determining factor as regards grape health. Abundant sunny days and thermal amplitude favor a good maturity and concentration of aroma and color in the grain. Soils are deep, permeable and poor in organic matter, decisive qualities at the time of obtaining good wine. Due to the low rain regime, irrigation is necessary. Water comes from the Andean range thaw, descending in the shape of rivers to become channels or ditches. Undoubtedly, the combination of these factors turns Argentina into a veritable oasis for the highest quality wine-making. Nevertheless, there is still a long way to go. Wine-making in Argentina, at the level that it achieves today, has a young history that goes back to a little more than 10 years ago. Technological progress, investment and some farsighted businessmen enabled a determining transformation. The province of Mendoza is the most traditional area in the viticultural industry, and is diverse enough to be divided into zones, according to their significantly different weather, height and soil characteristics. These include the Northern Zone, which is suitable for fruity whites and young reds, at a height from 600 to 700m; the Eastern Zone, with a height ranging from 600 to 700m, and the most productive zone in the province; the Uco Valley, a zone of colder weather and higher altitudes (between 800 and 1,400m over sea level); San Rafael, with heights ranging from 450 to 800m; and the High Zone of the Mendoza River, with heights ranging from 800 to 1,100m over sea level and various microclimates, this is the zone where almost all noble varieties have easily become adapted. It is a region that is remarkably well-suited to vine culture, protected from the Pacific’s cooling influence by the Andes and enjoying a long summer of cool nights and warm days, with a dry summer climate but plenty of water available from the region’s rivers. Malbec in particular is outstanding from this area, and it has clearly emerged as the star, the darling of both consumers and critics.
