Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.7 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 67 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Montesquieu on 2/25/2024 & rated 93 points: 4 hour decant. This seems to be sufficiently mature and harmonious to judge better than our PnP a few years ago. Yet my score is actually lower this time. It's a good wine that merits its price. It's not a 100 pointer. (1817 views)
Tasted by KurtPete on 12/30/2023 & rated 93 points: The wine looks crimson colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like raisin, mineral, bark and cinnamon. It tastes like prune, red currant, black currant (cassis) and bready. (2028 views)
Tasted by happy712 on 10/8/2023 & rated 93 points: Decanted 3 hours. Very interesting blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. Smells like old world style Bordeaux, fruit forward taste, but not the Cab makes it more elegant than your average Malbec. Would suggest pairing with a pork dish, perhaps mushrooms. (2773 views)
Tasted by randyjc on 9/20/2023 & rated 93 points: Smooth, subtle nose with smells of vanilla, stewed black fruit and expensive new leather shoes. Intriguing - wanted to stay with the smell for awhile. (The wine was decanted about 3.5 hours before consumption.) Tiny bit of alcohol appears on the nose but doesn’t detract. Lovely mouth feel - blackberry and currant with a streak of red fruit, slightly candied. A wine that really coats the mouth with fine tannins appearing only on the finish, carrying that finish for 30 seconds or so. Really a lush and luscious experience. Not sure what age will do for it so because I don’t think it will do much, I don’t really care. I’ll just drink the rest of these over the next 3 - 5 years. (2856 views)
Tasted by stschutz on 8/27/2023 & rated 94 points: Wonderful color, dark inky purple, and with, according to Tim, "All the best attributes of bark and plum" on the nose. This wine obviously possesses gorgeous purity of fruit, and with structure that makes one believe this will last " a looooong time". Drink 2023-2043. (2942 views)
Tasted by citizen1 on 8/16/2023 & rated 87 points: Good but needs more time (2668 views)
Tasted by Mascarello59 on 6/18/2023 & rated 93 points: From an Enomatic sample. Very Cab S aromatics, almost raw impression with highly perfumed nose and a good dose of oak. From the aromatic intensity one would perhaps thought this was more of a fruit bomb, but not at all. Fine tannin and medium body impression. Very Bordeaux like but I guess that’s what the wine was intended to be. Needs at least another 5 maybe 10 more years in the cellar. (2938 views)
Tasted by MRLT on 6/16/2023 & rated 93 points: Good now but needs some air, showing nice potential for the years to come. (1944 views)
Tasted by jkvedar on 4/25/2023 & rated 92 points: Popped and poured this one. Black fruits, mint/pencil shavings, some flowers and a hint of vanilla on the nose. Balanced on the palate . Medium tannins and medium acidity . Medium -bodied . Medium finish. Paired with pork braised in red wine, mashed potatoes and garden salad . Plenty of life ahead !! (2858 views)
Tasted by danchaq on 4/6/2023: 2 hr decant. Rich, chocolaty but with dark fruits of cab sav. Near the end of a long evening with friends so tasting notes are scant! (2660 views)
Tasted by Deo68 on 1/7/2023 & rated 85 points: Medium purple. Not a hint of ageing. Long legs. Sweet black fruit nose of plums, cherries and licorice. Palate is an elegant, controlled explosion of fruit and malbec silkiness within a net of tannin. Very well constructed. None of that in your face new world fruit bombs. Still tannin cloaked 60 minutes later.
Already drinking now but will be better in the next 2-5 years. Wouldn't agree with the 100 points from J Suckling. It's a good wine but not exceptional and I fear, a tad expensive at USD$100 for which it gets marked down. DBA Wah Lok DO61 (3486 views)
Tasted by peter.mancell@mfg.com.au on 1/5/2023 & rated 95 points: Glorious dark fruit, lovely smooth texture and just a great vino to enjoy.
Should only get better with a few more years in the cellar. (2995 views)
Tasted by randyjc on 12/1/2022 & rated 92 points: Not quite up to what it was like a couple months ago but still a pretty good piece of work. A bit of elegance and muted power. The malbec provides a bunch of flavor interest. I’ll hold off a while on the last few of these. (3487 views)
Tasted by DrZett on 11/10/2022 & rated 93 points: Medium to deep ruby colored. Very nice medium intense nose with lots of cherries, some violets and soft tar notes. On the palate surprisingly fresh - red cherries, dark cherries, blueberries and some licorice. Medium (+) bodied with a refreshing medium (+) intense acidity. Tannins are smooth and completely integrated. This is quite elegant, not a heavy fruit bomb. Great fruit depth and a nice complexity. The overall balance is beautiful. It’s a superb wine, not the most complex Bordeaux blend I ever tried, but it’s really smooth, elegant and enjoyable. The finish is long and leaves a velvety touch on your tongue.
It’s already in a beautiful spot, just give it some air. It’s not meant to age for another two decades but it feels like it could easily hold another ten years. (IG) (2680 views)
Tasted by richshoes on 10/21/2022 & rated 92 points: this wine has been disappointing relative to similar complex wines from the region...and relative to the price. astringent, acidic, bitter, not enough fruit--but nice well-balanced, medium bodied, elegant linear wine too (3177 views)
Tasted by HU on 9/13/2022 & rated 94 points: PnP. Medium body. Very smooth and elegant. This is not a powerful, overwhelming wine: rather a bit shy, but very delicious. Black and red cherry, licorice. Flowery. Could perhaps have more aroma, but very enjoyable. Will it develop in the next few years? Perhaps, hard to say: it is good to drink now. Tannins have largely receded. I would give it a 93+, my wife liked it a lot, though. Thus 94. (3055 views)
Tasted by Juliansi on 9/4/2022 & rated 88 points: Bordeaux blend from Mendoza, Argentina, with 2/3rds Malbec and the rest CS.

@Mika Tyson Teau thanks for spoiling us, and prepping this for over 5 hours; Even at the start if its drinking window, it's already showing refined and polished tannins.

Blackberry and plums with a sophisticated and lasting mouthfeel, the cherries and silky vanilla coming through at the finish was very enjoyable.

Deserving of the JS100? I am not quite sure today, but perhaps down the road in 5 years or more. Cheers!

Tasted by tedcholl on 7/2/2022 & rated 93 points: This Argentinan Bdx blend is 62% Malbec and 38% Cab Sauv. Still young it nevertheless displays great structure and balance, very rounded tannins, juicy black fruits, blackberry, blueberry, dark chocolate, and cherry. Paired wonderfully with grilled steak. (3248 views)
Tasted by acyso on 6/5/2022 & rated 88 points: Vinetasters: This and That (Chicago, IL): Served double blind. A significant step up from the Clos Apalta alongside. This is much more in balance, with some leathery notes and grainy tannins. Restrained, with lovely earthy tones and high-acid black fruits, this is obviously too young, but I expect for it to improve with time. I particularly like the balance of earthy notes with the high-altitude fruit notes. (4520 views)
Tasted by valedeniro on 5/22/2022 & rated 94 points: Appealing,bordeaux-esque nose of blue and black berries, blond tobacco, floral aromas, spices and subtle minerality.Very good ripeness, rich, with nuances of dark chocolate; builts quite intensely on the palate.Very fine tannins and lovely weight.Such purity of flavors, this is drinking beautifully now and should be even better over the next 5 years. (5998 views)
Tasted by PghMike on 3/25/2022 & rated 94 points: Definitely still young but opened up with time. Deep purple core brighter at the edges. Cherry predominant on the nose. Loads of dark fruit, with some leather and earthiness. Could use a longer finish and a little more acidity to score higher but very nice. (3580 views)
Tasted by maxima on 3/22/2022 & rated 92 points: Très beau vin.
Excellent. (4040 views)
Tasted by Montesquieu on 3/16/2022 & rated 94 points: Saw this on the wine list at Mariposa restaurant in Sedona, AZ, and decided to try it knowing that I have another 7 bottles cellared at home. Very good, but certainly not mind blowing at this early stage of development. It'll have to transform over time to merit the professional scores. Can it? For sure, given the tannins and structure, which are there in spades. My rating is for enjoyment today. I have hope, but not experience, that it'll be notably better in 5+ years. (3152 views)
Tasted by tedcholl on 3/13/2022 & rated 94 points: One of Argentinas most famous wines. A joint venture between Terrazas de los Andes and Ste Émilion's legendary Premier Grand Cru Classe A producer Chateau Cheval Blanc. 62% Malbec and 38% Cab Sauv. I decided to try 1 of my 3 bottles young and to my surprise very drinkable. Silky smooth and fully integrated oak and tannins. Unbelievable finesse and balance. A wonderful nose. Will add additional complexity with additional age. Drinking this wine pushes out of the mind all negative thoughts and worries. (2847 views)
Tasted by John McCabe on 12/30/2021 & rated 96 points: Clearly a very accomplished and special wine, the quality is quite obvious right out of the bottle. This is well balanced with structure, inviting dark fruit and some acidity. Clearly young, but still showing quite well. The sense of terroir is very clear too - the Malbec structure and fine delineation shines. Glad I have a few more. Will try and forget about them for a few years to let secondary and tertiary notes develop. (4173 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Argentina

Wines of Argentina

Argentina has been making wine since the 1500s, tracing its wine heritage back to Spain, France and, perhaps surprisingly, Italy. Italian immigration is second only to Spanish in Argentine culture, and the flavors of Italy show up strongly in the nation’s wine, food and cultural tradition. Historically, Argentina has kept much of its wine consumption at home, drinking most of the wine it makes. But we are now seeing more very serious Argentine wines north of the border, and Malbec is leading the movement. The wine-making region in Argentina ranges between the 22° and 42° South latitude. It spreads at the foothills of the Andean mountain range along over 2,400 km; from the province of Salta to the province of Río Negro, with a variety of climates and soils that makes each region a unique land. In general terms, the areas dedicated to vine cultivation are dry and arid with a low level of rain and humidity, determining factor as regards grape health. Abundant sunny days and thermal amplitude favor a good maturity and concentration of aroma and color in the grain. Soils are deep, permeable and poor in organic matter, decisive qualities at the time of obtaining good wine. Due to the low rain regime, irrigation is necessary. Water comes from the Andean range thaw, descending in the shape of rivers to become channels or ditches. Undoubtedly, the combination of these factors turns Argentina into a veritable oasis for the highest quality wine-making. Nevertheless, there is still a long way to go. Wine-making in Argentina, at the level that it achieves today, has a young history that goes back to a little more than 10 years ago. Technological progress, investment and some farsighted businessmen enabled a determining transformation. The province of Mendoza is the most traditional area in the viticultural industry, and is diverse enough to be divided into zones, according to their significantly different weather, height and soil characteristics. These include the Northern Zone, which is suitable for fruity whites and young reds, at a height from 600 to 700m; the Eastern Zone, with a height ranging from 600 to 700m, and the most productive zone in the province; the Uco Valley, a zone of colder weather and higher altitudes (between 800 and 1,400m over sea level); San Rafael, with heights ranging from 450 to 800m; and the High Zone of the Mendoza River, with heights ranging from 800 to 1,100m over sea level and various microclimates, this is the zone where almost all noble varieties have easily become adapted. It is a region that is remarkably well-suited to vine culture, protected from the Pacific’s cooling influence by the Andes and enjoying a long summer of cool nights and warm days, with a dry summer climate but plenty of water available from the region’s rivers. Malbec in particular is outstanding from this area, and it has clearly emerged as the star, the darling of both consumers and critics.
