Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.3 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 111 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by stamperb on 3/20/2023 & rated 84 points: Nose: baked red plums, ripe cassis, meaty sweat (by the nose, I would've guessed this was an aged Bandol). Palate: smoked tart red cherries, plum cake, chalk, powdery tannins that give your mouth the sensation of skiing through powder (weird analogy, I know); dryness and raisin on the finish. Honestly, I wanted to like this wine more, but the lack of acid and its raisin-like finish that began to dominate with more time in the glass negatively affected my rating. The next day, everything was completely oxidized and to my tastes undrinkable suggesting my bottle was right at the end of its life. (956 views)
Tasted by Nelsongwinn on 12/23/2022 & rated 94 points: Inky color, leather , blueberry and oud! Decanted for an hour, opened nicely. Wish I had more in the cellar. (952 views)
Tasted by aChave on 11/26/2022 & rated 91 points: Big, dark, deep wine. Surprisingly soft, especially on day 2. Holds its alcohol well; integrated. Opened 2 hours ahead, though 1 hour was sufficient. We’ll into secondary phase. (1048 views)
Tasted by markcic on 4/30/2022 & rated 91 points: Drinking well at 15 years and still has years to go. Dark fruit on the nose, the palate was dark berries, sandalwood, leather and a touch of vanilla leading to a moderately long finish. (1446 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 3/17/2022 & rated 92 points: Quite complex, soft, notes of plums, cherries, spices, sweet tobacco, dark flowers, leather. Good acidity on the palate, elegant, good depth and length. 91-93 (1706 views)
Tasted by F1nchy on 1/29/2022 & rated 95 points: Decanted two hours before drinking; delicious ! (1289 views)
Tasted by theelvoid on 1/24/2022 & rated 94 points: This is a powerhouse and nowhere near the end of its aging. The color is a dark ruby with fruit-forward nose. Decanted for 3 hours it continued to improve over the next two hours. Rich glycerin blackberry fruit, a hint of eucalyptus and strong tannins with enough acidity to keep it fresh. This is drinking beautifully now and should be even better over the next 5 years. (1259 views)
Tasted by Fracostes on 12/19/2021 & rated 95 points: Magnifique, we can still wait to open the next ones (1130 views)
Tasted by PierreBrusso on 11/1/2021 & rated 87 points: Unremarkable. (1126 views)
Tasted by christyspring on 7/20/2021 & rated 92 points: Enjoyable wine from Argentina; very well balanced at this stage although I suspect it will go another ten years! (1278 views)
Tasted by maxima on 1/9/2021 & rated 93 points: Superbe vin encore une fois.
(2495 views)
Tasted by dalemosier on 12/19/2020 & rated 92 points: Loved the blend of the malbec and CS. Cork fell apart in opening but the wine was excellent. (1405 views)
Tasted by maxima on 8/13/2020 & rated 93 points: Super beau vin, pas mal à point que cette bouteille fut!
C'est souple et raffiné, des fruits rouges et des épices
avec des tannins fins et une belle
finale bien longue. Excellent encore une fois! (2599 views)
Tasted by Herschel Krustofski on 5/31/2020 & rated 92 points: Obviously more mature than 6 years ago or so, but can last another decade.
Softened enough to be drink on its own (after decanting for an hour) but would probably work well with a rich beef dish. Very polished. Dense, jammy but smooth.
Wine of this density is best served chilled to 18C.
Room temperature is too high right now. (1940 views)
Tasted by SebDD on 5/5/2020 & rated 91 points: Licorice, tobacco leaves, black currant black cherry (1754 views)

Excellent. (3308 views)
Excellent. (2949 views)

Tasted by Soxwin on 2/25/2018 & rated 85 points: Very nondescript. Not much fruit. Disappointing. Feels done. Not bad but that’s about the best I can say about it. (3074 views)
Tasted by MDRwinos on 11/29/2017 & rated 92 points: :30 decant. Crowd favorite. Opened up quite nicely. Well integrated, good balance. (2849 views)

Tasted by Mike Mann on 8/27/2017 & rated 91 points: great nose, silky smooth, well balanced with a great finish. (2907 views)
Tasted by MDRwinos on 5/12/2017 & rated 91 points: Needs :30 to open up, then most enjoyable. Well integrated, good fruit present. medium tannins. May soften a bit more but I would not wait too much longer to drink. (2905 views)
Tasted by bherbst4114 on 1/15/2017 & rated 92 points: Powerful wine. Very good with elk and steak. Could use and hour to decant and open. After that it was very smooth with light tannins (3009 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Argentina

Wines of Argentina

Argentina has been making wine since the 1500s, tracing its wine heritage back to Spain, France and, perhaps surprisingly, Italy. Italian immigration is second only to Spanish in Argentine culture, and the flavors of Italy show up strongly in the nation’s wine, food and cultural tradition. Historically, Argentina has kept much of its wine consumption at home, drinking most of the wine it makes. But we are now seeing more very serious Argentine wines north of the border, and Malbec is leading the movement. The wine-making region in Argentina ranges between the 22° and 42° South latitude. It spreads at the foothills of the Andean mountain range along over 2,400 km; from the province of Salta to the province of Río Negro, with a variety of climates and soils that makes each region a unique land. In general terms, the areas dedicated to vine cultivation are dry and arid with a low level of rain and humidity, determining factor as regards grape health. Abundant sunny days and thermal amplitude favor a good maturity and concentration of aroma and color in the grain. Soils are deep, permeable and poor in organic matter, decisive qualities at the time of obtaining good wine. Due to the low rain regime, irrigation is necessary. Water comes from the Andean range thaw, descending in the shape of rivers to become channels or ditches. Undoubtedly, the combination of these factors turns Argentina into a veritable oasis for the highest quality wine-making. Nevertheless, there is still a long way to go. Wine-making in Argentina, at the level that it achieves today, has a young history that goes back to a little more than 10 years ago. Technological progress, investment and some farsighted businessmen enabled a determining transformation. The province of Mendoza is the most traditional area in the viticultural industry, and is diverse enough to be divided into zones, according to their significantly different weather, height and soil characteristics. These include the Northern Zone, which is suitable for fruity whites and young reds, at a height from 600 to 700m; the Eastern Zone, with a height ranging from 600 to 700m, and the most productive zone in the province; the Uco Valley, a zone of colder weather and higher altitudes (between 800 and 1,400m over sea level); San Rafael, with heights ranging from 450 to 800m; and the High Zone of the Mendoza River, with heights ranging from 800 to 1,100m over sea level and various microclimates, this is the zone where almost all noble varieties have easily become adapted. It is a region that is remarkably well-suited to vine culture, protected from the Pacific’s cooling influence by the Andes and enjoying a long summer of cool nights and warm days, with a dry summer climate but plenty of water available from the region’s rivers. Malbec in particular is outstanding from this area, and it has clearly emerged as the star, the darling of both consumers and critics.
