NOTE: was brought w/ me to Switzerland with a layover in DC; the wines i brought with me were muted- due to travel shock?) (4753 views)
Tasted by zheem on 11/20/2010: Delicious, losing fruit, needs some time open, but fills out with good flavors. Simply not worth the money considering what's available for less. (2361 views)
Tasted by Sweet Nancy on 10/8/2010: This wine was very enjoyable. Dark fruit and spice with a good balance of fruit and acidity. Long finish. (2592 views)
Tasted by CRAUBER4242 on 7/11/2010 & rated 94 points: Decanted for 1-2 hours. A laser beam nose of ripe red cherry and raspberry fruit with the flavors following suit on the long, plush finish. Drinking wonderfully now and should hold for a few years. Enjoyed at Manresa. (2733 views)
Tasted by shaferguy91 on 4/2/2010 & rated 92 points: Popped and pour. I think it would have been a speck better with an hour decant. A tiny bit hot on the finish. (2434 views)
Tasted by budman on 1/31/2010 & rated 94 points: WOW!!! (2552 views)
Tasted by zheem on 10/4/2009: really delicious wine, with an earthy fall aroma, and smooth mouthfilling flavors of fruit basket and herbs, and a sweet and satisfying finish. No unpleasant personality or heat here. (2701 views)
Tasted by budman on 7/28/2009 & rated 93 points: Virtually flawless - cherry and spice. No heat. Excellent. (2823 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 6/20/2009: The OC Blind Crew (The Winery Restaurant In Tustin, CA): Sweeter and little heavier than the last time I remember tasting this wine. Sweet red apple, little syrupy, mineral and I would now say this wine is in the prime drink window. Doesn't seem to be pushing past the line but it's reaching close to it. Generous and bold but enough red fruit to carry. Hit it. (3685 views)
Tasted by WetRock on 6/20/2009: The OC Goes Blind (The Winery, Tustin, CA): Nose is a bit tight showing berry skins. Juicy and a bit light but balanced with some cinnamon. (3556 views)
Tasted by Paul Lin on 6/20/2009 & rated 91 points: OC Blind Wine Dinner (The Winery - Tustin, CA): Interesting to taste this wine a year later. My impressions are largely the same. Rich and full-bodied notes of strawberries, black raspberries, black cherries, and cola, which later evolved into a crushed mixed berry and black plum medley. Good balancing acidity and a touch of mineral on the finish. My WOTF and tied for WOTN. (3808 views)
 Tasted by shaferguy91 on 6/17/2009 & rated 92 points: Decanted 1 hour. (2945 views)
Tasted by Winetex on 5/22/2009 & rated 91 points: Clear ruby red; Spice and cherry aromas and flavors; Balanced and quite delicious. Seems to be one of the most "red fruit" of the KB line-up. Interesting that it was very candied in its youth but now has classic Cali Pinot flavors. Good. (2968 views)
Tasted by jbposell on 3/18/2009 & rated 93 points: Wow wow wow! In a great place right now, definitely no need to hold longer. This is what I love in a K-B pinot! (3187 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 2/15/2009 & rated 94 points: Classic KB! Rich core of dark cherry fruit and spice on the nose and palate with silky texture and a long long finish. (3079 views)
Tasted by shapida on 1/23/2009: Popped and poured. This wine seems to be in a really good place. Fantastic nose and truly delicious. Loads of red fruits, that classic cola and some spice. Also, no discernible heat, which has been an issue for me with other KBs in the past. Excellent. (3713 views)
Tasted by Screameagle on 12/28/2008 & rated 94 points: One of my favorite KB pinots of all time. An hour decant was just about right. A stellar pinot enjoyed with Christmas dinner. Seems to be entering it's prime drinking window but should drink well for at least 3-4 more years. Kudos Michael. (3249 views)
Tasted by pgordon62 on 11/9/2008 & rated 92 points: A nicely delineated nose of cherry pie, raspberry, a little damp forest floor and chocolate. Clean precise red fruit flavors, a little cola, dusty minerals/rock on the medium bodied palate. Crisp but sappy finish that has just the slightest hint of heat. The oak (and alcohol) is better integrated than a bottle 6 months ago. Seems ready now and for the next 1-2. (3213 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Keefer Ranch Vineyard

Keefer Ranch is located in the Green Valley appellation in the southwestern corner of the Russian River Valley. The 30 acre vineyard is located on gently rolling hills in an area known to have some of the coolest weather in the Russian River Valley. Morning and evening fog, gentle afternoon breezes, cool overnight temperatures and warm afternoon sun produce grapes with terrific natural acidity and a combination of elegance and intensity. Marcy Keefer and her son Craig Strehlow grow some of the best Pinot Noir grapes in Sonoma County and we are proud to have them as members of the family. The site has a superb micro-climate, offering just the right amount of warmth during the day and very cool nights, which leads to intensely focused red fruited wine with strong natural acidity.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
