Community Tasting Notes (average 91.1 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 138 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Andrew H on 9/12/2020 & rated 88 points: Red with hints of orange/brick. Opens with a syrupy sweetness that integrates with some time (20-30m). Cranberry and not-quite-ripe cherry, ample spice of nutmeg and warm winter spice. Alcohol prominent and adds heat. Time to drink though likely could hold a bit longer. (906 views)
Tasted by DougLee on 7/20/2020 & rated 87 points: On the palate, nice berry fruit but a lengthy wave of hot alcoholic burn at the end of each sip. Not my favorite. (974 views)
Tasted by il_diavolo on 8/12/2019 & rated 88 points: This wine is appealing and quaffable at some level, but is just too big and sweet for a Pinot Noir. Seems the winemaking stamp is a bit excessive. (1116 views)
Tasted by Acohen on 3/17/2019 & rated 91 points: Sweet light cherry with slight cinnamon and nice finish (1075 views)
Tasted by djpin on 2/16/2019 & rated 94 points: Very smooth. A bit sweet upon opening but that dissipated quickly. Very well integrated and balanced at this stage. (1037 views)
Tasted by mattdathan on 4/17/2018 & rated 94 points: OMG, what a great Pinot! This is ethereal but with strength... (733 views)
Tasted by mwrock on 1/20/2018 & rated 92 points: Very smooth and light, a little funk in the nose to start, but cleared quickly with air. Fruit in taste still strong, apple, sour cherry and strawberries with a light taste of vanilla. Might have lost a little of its taste, but still a wonderful wine, everyone really enjoyed it. (762 views)
Tasted by TahoeRick on 12/24/2017: Probably waited too long to drink (680 views)
Tasted by texaswinelover on 11/25/2017: Stewed fruit, little Pinot typicity, at least heat is minimal. Touch leafy or brushy. Honestly this has held up better than I’d expected. (773 views)
Tasted by Legend38 on 12/26/2015 & rated 88 points: Nose: stewed cherry, red delicious apple skin, raspberry. Smoked ham, leather and faint bay leaf.

Taste: red delicious apple, sour cherry and strawberries and cream. Leather, vanilla and charred beef.

It's worth noting I coravinned a sip of this yesterday, so I'm not sure if there was any consequence there. Not sure how much longer this should sit. (2424 views)
Tasted by tomlee on 4/9/2015 & rated 91 points: Light red in color. 14.7% ABV. Black fruits, baking spice and rose petals on the nose. Light body with medium acidity. Mouth coating and voluptuous in a manner in which I have come to expect from this producer. Black cherry, brown sugar and black tea on the palate. Lacks the hedonistic fruit that Kosta Brown so often delivers but delicious nonetheless. Drink in the near term. (2609 views)
Tasted by cns on 9/22/2014 & rated 89 points: KB is a style that is too fruit driven and too big. There is a fantastic pinot in there, but the winemaking style is way too big for me. But if you like fruit forward, big jammy pinots, this is for you! (2784 views)
Tasted by jimmythesaint on 2/14/2014: Drank with another couple on V-day. KB's one of my wife's favorites and now it's the favorite of another. Drank with a 2011 Shea Shea (lovely bottle) and it's not a fair comparison but the KB was more refined with baking spice, dried cherry and a soft finish. (3259 views)
Tasted by Ronfeldman on 2/12/2014 & rated 92 points: Coravin test bottle. Used coravin and drank 1/2 of the bottle. Waited 2 weeks and opened the bottle and finished. Wine was every bit as good, maybe a little better. Don't think it will get much better, but has some life in it. Grade for coravin -A+!! (3408 views)
Tasted by cns on 11/4/2013 & rated 88 points: Too fruity, candy like and not a lot of structure. I keep being disappointed by KB ... (2158 views)
Tasted by Andrew H on 11/1/2013 & rated 92 points: Deep red with some heat on the nose. Deep cherry with some raspberry, vanilla and winter spice hints. Heat on the finish that increased as bottle warmed from cellar temperature. (1813 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 10/27/2013 & rated 91 points: Classic delicious KB. Forward, rich nose has cola, black cherry, sage and all-spice aromas. Palate sports mouth-coating rich black cherry pie filling with modest kick of acidity providing just enough freshness. Medium plus finish. Conceals the alcohol well. Very consistent with a bottle drank two years ago. (1615 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 5/20/2013 & rated 86 points: Dull garnet - mature looking as the purple is gone. Rich Pinot/cola nose with just a bit of heat. Substantially better that other KB's of the vintage. That said, this wine is still out of balance and lacks flavor penetration. Lots of weight and alcohol but not enough balancing flavor. What is there is good. Wine is most inviting on the nose. (86) (1700 views)
Tasted by pelwart on 1/5/2013 & rated 93 points: Still a great wine, not as heavy as other Kosta Browne pinots, the fruit was still forward tasting light cherry. (2059 views)
Tasted by Phredd on 10/20/2012 & rated 91 points: Dark in the glass, but not completely opaque, the nose showed notes of hay and grass as the first element, which was a little odd. There were also the more expected tones of cherry and cinnamon. While it did not smell particularly sweet, the palate had a good deal of sugary character to it, but less vanilla than the prior effort. Instead of cherry pie, it came across more like sugared cherries. Unfortunately, it was also quite a bit too hot, and a check of the ABV showed this was 14.7%, so it really is pretty high octane. It seems surprising that this six-year old bottle was not showing a little more in the way of secondary notes. It is still a good wine, and I scored it at the time as 90-91, slightly behind the Coleman Nicole. The original price on this wine was $68, and the auction price is around $200, so the CN is by far a better QPR. I expected more from KB. (1695 views)
Tasted by TwistedArmadillo on 10/13/2012 & rated 93 points: Wow, amazing KB. This wine has mellowed and does not have that distinct KB earthy flare. Rich chocolate cassis cherry tobacco nose with a hint of hay. Very elegant wine. (2181 views)
Tasted by Ragav on 9/18/2012 & rated 92 points: We had two over dinner last night with friends. Decanted both and was surprised by the colour, in that they werent as deep as I thought they would be. Both were very smooth and they reminded me more of Burgundian pinot, which was a pleasant surprise. (2466 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 7/31/2012 & rated 91 points: Wine Dinner at Providence; 7/30/2012-7/31/2012 (Providence): Obvious but judicious use of oak here with good concentrated blackberry-black cherry CA pinot fruit; a little underlying minerality, not heavy but medium plus intensity, not too complex; very nice balance all around. (2677 views)
Tasted by t_moderne on 7/1/2012 & rated 90 points: Pop and pour and followed over 6 hours. Good rich color. Nose of spice and some earth and red fruits. Goo fruit and structure. If any criticism, it would be that it is lacking in elegance. (1979 views)
Tasted by kleinahoe on 6/26/2012 & rated 91 points: Nice, but maybe just a tad tired (1819 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Keefer Ranch Vineyard

Keefer Ranch is located in the Green Valley appellation in the southwestern corner of the Russian River Valley. The 30 acre vineyard is located on gently rolling hills in an area known to have some of the coolest weather in the Russian River Valley. Morning and evening fog, gentle afternoon breezes, cool overnight temperatures and warm afternoon sun produce grapes with terrific natural acidity and a combination of elegance and intensity. Marcy Keefer and her son Craig Strehlow grow some of the best Pinot Noir grapes in Sonoma County and we are proud to have them as members of the family. The site has a superb micro-climate, offering just the right amount of warmth during the day and very cool nights, which leads to intensely focused red fruited wine with strong natural acidity.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
