Tasted by PCVT on 2/13/2024 & rated 91 points: Très joli Nebbiolo équilibre - jolis tannins, profondeur de fruit et finesse (500 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 3/17/2023 & rated 91 points: Friday dinner at Wimborne. Pop and poured. Drank in Grassl cru.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of floral violets + rose, baby powder, red cherries, dark red berries, red plum, some leather with air. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), fine high tannins, medium+ almost full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of ripe red cherries, red plum, dark red ripe strawberries, sweet floral spice, slight licorice and leather. Medium+ finish.
Very good quality. Serious and good Langhe Nebbiolo. On the ripe side due to the vintage. Drinking well already. Another year or two shouldn't hurt too. (1381 views)
Tasted by Bakerbd on 2/18/2023 & rated 92 points: Red cherries and roses, lifted perfume, powdery tannin, med + acidity (1071 views)
Tasted by The Guzz on 12/12/2022 & rated 91 points: Delicious young neb. Sweet and open. (1211 views)

Tasted by Vas19 on 12/31/2021 & rated 91 points: Side by side with 2017 Rinaldi Langhe nebbiolo. Both very nice, this was a bit less structured and more ready to drink today. The nose was also slightly more complex at this point. But splitting hairs, both were very solid young wines. (1656 views)
Tasted by cct on 11/7/2021 & rated 89 points: Cherry and plum, rose, violet, and tar on the nose. Midweighted and supple, it's ripe and walking on the edge if overripe. Sappy and broad but not heavy, this still has excellent balance. An approachable, giving wine that is deceptively supple on entry but firms up on the back end. Fruit is ripe with hints of amaro, more tar, and roses. Firm back end tannins contrast the otherwise supple fruit. This lost some steam overnight losing both some of the freshness and balance. while I doubt this will fall off a cliff any time soon, I would likely err on drinking this in the short term for its approachable and still fresh fruit and perfume. I have some concern for the warmer fruit and where it will go. Very good but not a great vintage of this often terrific wine. (1450 views)
Tasted by soyhead on 10/7/2021: nose - strawberry , sweet red fruit
mouth - very ripe as point out by DC, clean, minerally, cherry, nice enough but I wont be chasing it down. (1449 views)
Tasted by abc55 on 8/24/2021 & rated 94 points: Stor næse - friske røde bær, fløde, rosenblade og udpræget marcipan. Lige så koncentreret i smagen, frugtdomineret og ligetil. Dog ikke mørk og forholdsvist let. Moden og knivskarp frugt med medium+ syre og høj tannin.

Måler sig nemt med Barolo på samme prisniveau. (1409 views)
Tasted by forceberry on 9/23/2020 & rated 89 points: From what I've understood (couldn't find confirmation), this Langhe Nebbiolo is made mostly with purchased fruit. 14% alcohol. Decanted for 4 hours.

Clear, very translucent and quite pale ruby red color. Savory and somewhat restrained nose of licorice, some smoky tones, a little bit of dark forest fruit, light mineral notes of sun-baked rocks and earth, a hint of old leather and a touch of ripe red plums. The wine is quite full-bodied and very ripe on the palate with rather tightly-knit and very dry flavors of ripe dark forest fruits, some leather, light notes of earth, a little bit of licorice root and a hint of gravelly minerality. The overall feel is pretty lean with the high acidity and moderately grippy tannins, yet the mouthfeel is surprisingly suave and silky. The finish is quite tight and tannic with dry flavors of sour cherries, some tart cranberries, a little bit of earth, light gravelly mineral notes and a hint of licorice root.

A ripe yet enjoyably structured Nebbiolo that feels relatively understated fruit-wise. I can imagine this kind of tannic wine might feel excessively tough and aggressive for many, but I found this structurally very enjoyable. However, flavor-wise the wine came across as relatively linear and simple, lacking the depth I look for in a Bartolo Mascarello. This wasn't a bad wine in any way, it just didn't leave a lasting impression. Hopefully it will open up and pick up some depth and complexity in the cellar. Let it wait for a long time - this is built for it. (2688 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 6/7/2020: Highly aromatic, penetrating, even. The palate is med/med+, the feel is a power without the expected weight equation. This has a lot of complexity already, and will probably prove, for most, difficult to let rest. Sure, it could go several more years, but if you have a few, you really should open one now. Better, more even/harmonic, at 90 minutes open. Another year of rest will likely only help. Lovely, and a pure joy. 14,0% abv. highly recommended

Bartolo Mascarello

Ken Vastola's fabulous guide to Bartolo Mascarello labels

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.
