Community Tasting Notes (average 91.1 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 92 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Bob H on 12/21/2023: This is very nice - not a big wine, but very tasty. (982 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 11/1/2023: Served in a trio with '90 and '01, and in spite of the the 18 year age gap remarkably youthful and very close to the '01 in freshness and elegance. Mild amber with notes of apricot, lemon, honey and roasted cashews. Outstanding. (1220 views)
Tasted by jonboy74 on 9/30/2023 flawed bottle: cork pushed in. totally oxidized (1310 views)
Tasted by NoahCap on 8/31/2023: Half bottle. Opened for early 40th bday along with Ch Margaux.

Deep gold/light amber in color. On the nose: Not a hint of mustiness. Smells incredibly fresh. Deep honey, dried apricots, white flowers, overripe peaches, a bit of pie crust. In the mouth: the first impression of acidity before the sweetness. So lively and zing-y! The sweetness comes right afterwards and coats the palate with flavors of lemon drops, sweetened chamomile tea, white and yellow flowers, honeysuckle, juicy yellow peaches. Smooth and velvety on the long finish.

This is a beautiful Sauternes that was a wonderful accompaniment to an array of savory appetizers. It’s not the most complex Sauternes I’ve ever had, but it’s distinguishing feature to me is how alive and fresh it is. Maybe that’s funny to say for a 40 yr old wine, but this is tastes like it is just starting to barely pick up the caramelly nutty aromas/flavors of age. This will last a long long time. (1371 views)
Tasted by Jhalpern27 on 8/29/2023 & rated 92 points: Still going strong at 40. Needed to use the Durand as the cork was slightly pushed in to the capsule. The end of the cork ended up breaking off anyway. Beautiful apricot nose and youthful taste. I’m not sure how long these will last but I plan to keep drinking my remaining 5 bottles sooner than later. Cheers (1312 views)
Tasted by crazywineguy on 8/26/2023 & rated 93 points: Big Bottle Lunch: In a great place of developed complexity. a real pleasure to drink. Get a bottle in good condition and you are in heaven. (953 views)
Tasted by crewald on 8/2/2023: Ended middle weekend captain's dinner with this. Beautiful wine, but lacking in complexity. Orange marmalade. (868 views)
Tasted by JLCFan on 3/18/2023 & rated 89 points: A gorgeous bottle.

Still full of youthful vigor - this possessed the sweetness and the fruit character of a much younger Sauternes.

A smoky minerality and a slight tendency towards mushroom were the only hints towards its age.

A beautiful bottle still in its relative youth. However, at 40 years of age, I expected more complexity. (1251 views)
Tasted by Maphill01 on 2/24/2023: Amber color, hints of bronze. Modest nose of caramel. Much more expressive on the palate, marmalade, orange peel, mango, ginger and honeycomb. Dense fruit, but medium body, with nice acidity for freshness. (1288 views)
Tasted by Jhalpern27 on 2/7/2023 & rated 93 points: This is the second bottle of this I’ve opened. The cork was sunk in and the capsule was somewhat corroded. However I pierced it with the Durand and the cork came out clean. My last bottle the cork slid right into the bottle. I was concerned these bottles were bad. However, quite the contrary, this Suduiraut is in a good stage. The wine had a great perfume of honey apricots and marmalade with a 45-50 second finish. Just a lovely Sauternes. (1436 views)
Tasted by NickA on 2/2/2023 & rated 91 points: 1985 Bordeaux-o-rama (Noize): Icing sugar, orange blossom and a touch of botrytis on the nose, then some delicious grilled pineapple on the palate. Very tasty, but seemed slightly subdued; I often can't help thinking the sweet wine is my favourite of the evening, but that didn't happen this time. (1692 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 2/2/2023 & rated 93 points: Jason’s 85 Claret @ Noizé, table 2 (Noizé, London): Mid amber. Nicely restrained botrytis nose of saffron, barley sugar and crème brûlée. Sweetness, line and a touch of custard. Lovely. **** (1655 views)
Tasted by Miguelvino@yahoo.com on 1/3/2023 & rated 89 points: Passed its peak. Dark golden color, dried peach Still complex , good acidity , medium to full body , long aftertaste. (1331 views)
Tasted by ohne_musik on 6/3/2022 & rated 93 points: Loving this Suduiraut. Despite a loose cork that dropped straight into the bottle (barely touched by the ah-so), this is still remarkably fresh for an almost 40 year old bottle (much more so than the ‘83 Climens a couple year ago). The sweetness has almost completely dropped off - this now reads as off-dry, comparable to a kabi feinherb — including a laser bear of still fresh acid. It has fairly intense botrytis on the nose, with more subtle saffron-citron marmalade in the mouth, with a stronger saline mineral intensity, layered florals, a couple drops of bitters, and an almost chenin-like waxiness. Creamy texture, with a moderately short finish - the one thing holding this back from being exceptional. (2038 views)
Tasted by partymonk on 2/4/2022 & rated 93 points: golden brown in color. nose- botrytis, balanced, bright. palate- syrup, less sweet compared to crew, very balanced, stone fruit quality (2470 views)
Tasted by jlgnml on 10/1/2021 & rated 90 points: Pull this out of the cellar and the cork had fallen out. No panick, color was youthful, good notes of apricot, and a stern finish. Pretty good especially for its age. Drink. (3206 views)
Tasted by Border Boss on 1/30/2021: Similar to my notes from 2019. Still just moderately sweet with a good acid base. I prefer this style of wine with foie gras instead of with dessert. A really nice wine. (3306 views)
Tasted by dream on 6/1/2020 & rated 88 points: Medium-bodied and fairly unctious and creamy with decent acidity to keep it in balance. Tasty flavors of orange marmalade and apricots lead to a moderately complex finish with notes of white minerals and brown spices. Lacks the intensity of the top wines at this point but it’s well-made if a bit tiring after the first glass. (4131 views)
Tasted by wihong on 5/3/2020 & rated 92 points: Dark, unctuous amber. Aroma of marmalade, passion fruit, canned pineapple and dried mango. Medium full body, medium acidity and high sweetness. Palate entry of intense marmalade and mint, followed by mid-palate with passionfruit, dried mango, sweet pineapple and seedless clementine. Long finish with butterscotch, lychee, dried apricot, thyme and clove. Mouth coating Sauternes with tropical fruits and great acidity to balance with the unctuous sweetness, could use a bit more complexity to make it great. (3276 views)
Tasted by Sommameteur on 6/11/2019: Mistake (3406 views)
Tasted by Border Boss on 4/30/2019 & rated 90 points: Medium golden color with moderate sweetness and balancing acidity. Paired well with foie gras at the beginning of the meal and the praline souffle at the end. Fully mature with no sign of degrading at all. Many years of life left. (4016 views)
Tasted by Satoshi Nakamoto on 12/30/2018 & rated 92 points: Drank with the family and Wilson to celebrate a 1983 anniversary.

At 35 years old, this has an intriguing nose of sweet egg yolk, butterscotch, toffee, ripe Asian pear, candied orange peel, and just a hint of persimmons. It even has an element of alcoholic heat, which you quickly detect on the palate.

The flavors are more of the same, except the emphasis is more on figs, candied orange peel, and marmalade. It’s actually a fairly simple and almost too approachable wine without rich layers, bright acidity, or much complexity. This is a simple wine of celebration and not one of analysis.

The only way this gets a higher score is if it gets even older, to the point where people glorify it more for its old age than its drinkability. All in all, a fun wine to explore. (4228 views)
Tasted by JustBad on 10/18/2018 & rated 97 points: WSET Level 2 Class; 9/13/2018-11/4/2018 (The Texas Wine School): Outstanding quality Sauternes that is clear, deep gold in color. On the nose, it's clean with a pronounced intensity. It has aromas and flavors of honey, nectarine, marmalade, dried apricots, dried apples, caramel, nutmeg, almond, walnut, and sweet spices. On the palate, it's sweet with high acidity, full body, and an extremely long finish.

At this point, this is the oldest wine I have ever had and it is absolutely incredible!! Super creamy smooth, wonderful balance and complexity, great length of honey and nuts... And while being sweet, it is not overbearingly so and the sugar is not what lingers...just the wonderful honey and nuts... My best rating so far!! (4194 views)
Tasted by forceberry on 3/2/2018 & rated 96 points: Deep golden yellow color with subtly bronze highlights. Incredibly rich and complex nose with aromas of cream, browned butter, melted beeswax, acacia honey, some floral perfume notes and a hint of dried peach. The wine is sweet, rich and very intense on the palate with body that is definitely more on the medium - even somewhat light - side than on the heavy department with flavors of pithy lemon bitterness, some spicy and slightly bitter wildhoney, a little bit of dried blood orange, a hint of creaminess and a touch of browned butter. Overall the wine seems to have dried up a little bit, emphasizing the moderately high acidity and subtle bitterness over sweetness, making the wine come across as surprisingly delicate and fresh. The finish is very long, complex and slightly bitter with intense flavors of stony minerality, butter, some honeyed richness, a little bit of dried pineapple, a hint of peppery spice and a touch of pannacotta. The honeyed richness carries on for a long time without making the aftertaste feel heavy or sticky.

An incredibly beautiful and captivating Sauternes, although surprisingly light and fresh at that. This wine had passed the concentrated unctuousness of Suduiraut and moved on to the part where the sweetness is there, but it doesn't taste that much nor does it contribute as much to the body as in the youth. Incredible depth and complexity here, you could just sniff the wine for half a day and sip and savor for the other. Pure bliss. Definitely worth its price at 20€ for a 8 cl glass at Wine & View Bar, Helsinki. (4707 views)
Tasted by FransS on 11/6/2017 & rated 88 points: Lovely colour, a modest bouquet (a bit flat), a bit waxy, some caramel/cinnamon smooth taste, missing complexity, a bit short finish. (4220 views)

Chateau Suduiraut Sauternes Bordeaux France

Just down the road from Yquem, is the large, beautiful estate of Suduiraut, 40 km from Bordeaux. On the left bank of the Garonne, Comte Blaise de Suduiraut built the this noble and aesthetically brilliant Château that is replete with stunning gardens designed by the very famous Le Nôtre. Suduiraut is one of the great wines of Sauternes, reknowned for their aromatic complexity and wealth of exotic flavours. The Château’s privileged sandy soils are well-drained and layered with gravel. In September misty mornings are followed by warm afternoons that allow for the development of botrytis cinerea, or noble rot. This in turn delivers the rich and distinctive taste of sweet but balanced wines kissed by honey and marked by lively acidity and opulent textures.

This Sauternes displays harmony, power and marked complexity.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Sauternes

Le Grand Crus Classés de Sauternes et Barsac 1855 (Crus Classés de Sauternes et Barsac) - Read more about Sauternes, Barsac and its wines
– Read more about the 1855 Sauternes Barsac Classification

Forty kilometres south of Bordeaux, Sauternes is an AOC that includes together 5 communes, including Barsac. For centuries, humans have been patiently learning to master this region's climate, soils and grape varieties. But Mother Nature did a good job laying the foundation. The Sauternes terroir is distinguished by a geological predisposition to gravel and pebbles that cover limestone streaked with veins of clay. In the communes of Fargues and Sauternes, a layer of hardpan (iron-oxide cemented sand) in which vines flourish can be found. The vineyards at the highest elevations and farthest from the river have the best terroirs and produce the majority of the Crus Classés, including the monumental Château Yquem.Sauternes wines are made from Sémillon (80% of vines planted) and Sauvignon (15%) grapes. A bit of Muscadelle occasionally is used to give the wines an untamed touch. Sauternes have an "aged gold" colour that is denser and darker than other dessert wines. When they age, they develop a stunning amber colour. The nose has aromas of flowers and fruit that melt together to create a bouquet of remarkable complexity and balance. The primary aromas include almond, quince, mango, pineapple, stewed peach, dried apricot and passion fruit. There are also floral notes, with touches of linden, acacia, mimosa and honeysuckle. And as is typical with Sémillon, there are also notes of beeswax, almond and hazelnut. In the mouth, Sauternes wines have a powerful style that is viscous but extremely elegant. Its strong sweetness is captivating. Finally, its aromatic finish is something that simply must be experienced.

2013 Vintage Notes:
"the extractive ratios in th[is] year are in the phenomenal range and there's ripeness/botrytis to cover two treks around the globe [...] so appealing is the immediacy of the wines. Many can be enjoyed now for their sheer joy and delicious nature. [Some] should also age" - Jon Rimmerman

2014 Vintage Notes:
"a golden vintage for Sauternes. It may not have the depth or weight of 2010, but it has some of the richness. What has set 2014 apart is the intense lime and lemon flavors that cut into any overblown cloying character and allow both the fruit and the honeyed noble rot to sing." - Wine Enthusiast
