Tasted by FredF on 8/15/2016 & rated 88 points: Dark, heavy nose that is filled with strawberries and cherries. Wood and earth , a bit of eucalyptus and a very lingering aftertaste. Nicely balanced food wine. (1435 views)
Tasted by toneb on 8/26/2012 & rated 87 points: Good wine. Nice acidity with some red fruit and quite decent tannins. Slight off smell @ first but then it got better after 30min. (3968 views)
Tasted by FredF on 5/5/2012 & rated 90 points: This is a big wine, toscano, and it is great by itself or with a meal! fruit. Cleansing, nice acidity, tannins. red fruit. great after taste and it handles everything you can eat! (3754 views)
Tasted by FredF on 12/17/2011 & rated 89 points: Nice blend and very good with a eggplant parm. Not too much garlic or heavy spice, just the tomato base. Wonderful match! (4187 views)
Tasted by bruinesq84 on 5/5/2011 & rated 90 points: have had this many times. always a nice accompaniment to an italian dinner, as it was this time. A little more attack in the mounth as the tannins hit a little too hard, but certainly not abrasive. The merlot/cab/ sangio blend is nicely woven with tart acid and nice oak treatment. A good value driven tuscan for about $20. (4446 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 3/25/2009: I like the ripe raspberry and red fruit that this show. Good structure, nice concentration. Complex because of the different varieties showing off. A touch of circus in the mouth but really not that bad. I like it allot better than I thought I would. Short finish, I wonder if it will broaden in time. Is it Tuscan? Or not short finish, but not quite all there. I think time will give it more.

Again, just switching from Tignanello and Compaccio and this really shows the cabernet and merlot. But in a nice way. Lush, moden, and big fruited for a Tuscan wine. Finely balanced. I guess it vaguely shows Italy to me but not much. On the other hand maybe it is just good wine to drink and worrying about typicity is yesterday's mellow drama. (2131 views)
Tasted by bin905 on 3/25/2009 & rated 90 points: Ruby red color. Raspberry, cherry, and spice scent. Full body, juicy, ripe, dark fruit with full tannins. (3567 views)
Tasted by ToniJ on 12/9/2008: A collaboration between Baron Lafite Rothschild and Castellare di Castellinathis, this is the entry level wine of this estate of Rocca di Frassinello. On the nose it has ripe plum anise pepper and Granite. 45 Merlot, 40 Cab and 15 Sangioveto. Great structure and length. Great value compared to the higher end wines from this estate. Great texture on the palate mochaey and black berries not red berries. (2509 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 12/8/2008: A partnership with Baron Rothschild. Rich, impressive yet balanced and well done. Very nice at $28. (1927 views)
Tasted by jeff nowak on 11/15/2008 & rated 85 points: a generous pour by the glass at restaurant noca. i sent the first glass back...very astringent/bitter; they were extremely responsive, no hassle, and opened a new bottle for the replacement glass. no real depth of fruit here, and, of course, the wine was tight with dusty tannin. nevertheless, not much to recommend. (1813 views)
Tasted by Champagneinhand on 2/7/2008 & rated 90 points: excellent tuscan QPR, lots of rasberry, tobacco, leather with a hint of smoke at the end, which lasted a little over 30 seconds. Smooth tannins for such a young red. Will surely buy more. (2139 views)

SuperTuscan Blend

SuperTuscan Blend refers to wines which feature a significant Sangiovese component combined with grapes not traditionally associated with Italy like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon. This separates it from "Sangiovese blend" which is used for wines which are predominantly Sangiovese and combined with traditional Italian varieties. There is often confusion as many wines most famous associated with the term "Super Tuscan" like Sassicaia, Masseto and Ornellaia have no Sangiovese and are properly linked to 'Red Bordeaux Blend.'

In fact, Super Tuscan was a term coined to refer specifically to wines such as Sassicaia and Tignanello. These were wines that "fell out" of the official DOCG classification of Italian wines because they either contained grapes not permitted (international varietals such as cabernet sauvignon or merlot,) were aged differently (I.e. in barrique) or were 100% sangiovese - which was not permitted at the time for Chianti (E.g. Fontodi Flaccianello.) Forced to be classified as simply "Vina di Tavola" these wines nontheless quickly found favour in international markets and comanded prices above the highest quality DOCG Chianti Classico & Brunello di Montalcino wines at the time. The wine industry and press began to refer to these wines as SuperTuscans because of their popularity and quality, but also because of the prices they commanded. Subsequently, the Italian authorities, under the Goria Law 1992, redrew the classifications, and included the category IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) to classify the SuperTuscans.
