Tasted by Quarked on 1/9/2024 & rated 89 points: Bottled by Fontanafredda (as are the newer Kirkland barolos), this is a reasonable though fairly simple barolo. This is drinking well at 7-8 years of age, with some tannins still apparent and plenty of kirchy fruits. Could go a few more years. (908 views)
Tasted by someshg on 12/15/2023: ok (855 views)
Tasted by Cabfrancophile on 11/21/2023 & rated 88 points: Very good, not great. Skews towards a Zin like character with Kirsch profile, yet nicely structured with baking spice and leather aromas. Tannins are a little astringent on the finish, though not oppressive. Strikes me as a Barolo to drink over the next few years, before age 10. (798 views)
Tasted by mwneil on 10/5/2023 & rated 92 points: Light red color, smooth tannins, good acid with generous fruit, nice balance, not sure if aging helped but it did not hurt, 14.0% abv, drank with whole wheat spaghetti and meatballs, on to the 2019 vintage, a good value, interesting that there was no sediment. (1189 views)
Tasted by KSWinegeek on 9/25/2023 & rated 90 points: Bright ruby red with slight orange hues on edge. Tar on nose. Cherry palate. Tannins prominent. Made for Costco by Fontanafredda. (1173 views)
Tasted by Miguelvino@yahoo.com on 7/9/2023 & rated 90 points: Light garnet color, at nose red dark cherries, some tobacco/leather, some mushroom, same at palate, medium tannings, medium-high acidity, medium length. Good with pizza. (1294 views)
Tasted by prasm on 5/26/2023 & rated 90 points: Appearance: Clear, light garnet.
Nose: Medium+ intensity with aromas of sour cherry, strawberry, tar, cinnamon, and leather.
Palate: Medium+ acid, medium+ youthful grippy tannins, medium body, medium intensity, 14.0% abv with flavors of sour cherry, black cherry, and spice with a medium+ finish.

Balance: Very good - slightly tart dominated
Length: Excellent
Intensity: Very good
Complexity: Very good (1297 views)
Tasted by DoubleMagnum on 5/9/2023 & rated 90 points: Aging nicely. Notes of rose petals, raspberry and forest floor. Acid and tannin in balance, no heat.
I still think this drinks like a great Langhe for the price. (1474 views)
Tasted by Old Wine Maven on 4/10/2023: A lighter wine, but very pretty. Good value (1440 views)
Tasted by Rjwhit on 3/11/2023 & rated 88 points: Pleasant but not particularly complex. Had kind of an astringent taste on the finish. Not exactly the king of wines but fine to have with a pizza or pasta. I guess I really can't expect much more for $20. (1520 views)
Tasted by guillermo- on 2/10/2023 & rated 91 points: A year and a half later this is showing beautifully with the same notes as my prior notes but more immediately open. Sad this was my last bottle. (1560 views)
Tasted by Jd6725 on 2/8/2023 & rated 91 points: Quite solid expression of Barolo. Although I preferred the 2015 a bit. Great QPR (851 views)
Tasted by TRguy on 9/16/2022 & rated 87 points: Great value, a style that drinks well when young. Enjoyable (2014 views)
Tasted by gnsti on 9/8/2022 & rated 90 points: 민트, 담배, 얌전한 과실(체리, 무화과), 제비꽃 향기도 살짝
중상의 산도, 미디엄 투 풀바디, 촘촘한듯 부드러운 타닌
피니시도 괜찮고, 단조롭고 구조감이 좀 떨어지지만
여전한 가성비! (1839 views)
Tasted by Les Kangas on 5/19/2022 & rated 90 points: Wish I had more, Reidel stemware (2228 views)
Tasted by Cabfrancophile on 5/14/2022 & rated 90 points: Consumed over 2 days. Decanted about 90 mins day 1, with the rest stored in a swing-top container in the fridge overnight.

My enjoyment is a bit higher this go 'round. Vintage character aside, there's plenty of Nebb character and Barolo weight. Sour cherry, even a bit of tar and rose inner aroma, savory herbs. Tannins provide a nice grip without being overbearing--you are drinking a structured Nebbiolo, but not being punished for doing so.

Drink (if you don't mind a bit of structure) or hold (though I'm not sure this needs to develop much further). (2079 views)
Tasted by Wild Boar on 3/14/2022 & rated 89 points: Delivered a Barolo profile for a value price (mine was a gift). Decanted for an hour, fruit and tannins nicely balanced especially considering its youth. All in all, very pleasant Drank it with meatloaf and Mac and cheese. (2701 views)
Tasted by Cabfrancophile on 3/5/2022 & rated 87 points: Consistent with prior note. Bold mix of strawberry and cherry, herbs, full bodied, gobs of acidity. Chewy tannins, manageable by Barolo standards, finishes with intermittent heat.

But as NAS20 observed, it doesn't have the anise and menthol notes that really shine in many 2016s. It's monolithic and lacking in finesse. Good QPR for $20, I just don't see this evolving or otherwise competing with mid-level Baroli. (2230 views)

Martha’s Vineyard blind taste
Costco $20 (2194 views)
Tasted by nrulis on 2/20/2022 & rated 89 points: This was lovely. As others have said, not overly complex but notes of cherry, rose, a little bit of tar. Easy drinking nebbiolo was terrific with food. High QPR. (1776 views)
Tasted by nas20 on 1/19/2022 & rated 86 points: Honestly, it's fine. Not great, not good. Had the expected tannins and acid. Doesn't really give me some of the complexity, particularly the mint or anise notes I tend to get in the nicer barolos. If I had tasted without seeing the bottle, probably just would've thought it to be a $15ish Langhe nebbiolo, nothing special. (2165 views)
Tasted by evjoh on 1/18/2022: Costco delivers once again. This is by no means the best Barolo I’ve ever had, but that’s not a bad thing. It’s simple and modern, which is just what I want from a young $20 Nebbiolo.

Red fruit, leather, tar, licorice, and sharpie. Strong, fine tannins and high acidity. It needs a lot of air; it even survived three or four days in the fridge. I don't have that much experience with this grape, but I'd say it's comparable to similarly-priced Langhe Nebbiolo. (1629 views)
Tasted by Shavedaddy on 12/16/2021 & rated 88 points: Nice. I think I'm coming around on barolo. Seem to have better luck with older ones. Nice sour cherry cranberry and raspberry. Good balance acidity in check. (1900 views)
Tasted by gnsti on 12/11/2021 & rated 89 points: 페어링 탓에 지난번만큼은 아니었지만 이지 드링킹 네비올로의 역할로 퍼펙트 (1906 views)
Tasted by kyleemail on 12/1/2021 & rated 90 points: My first Barolo! Consumed it with Osso Buccco, based on a recommendation. Quite wonderful. (1774 views)

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Barolo

Regional History:
The wines of Piedmont are noted as far back as Pliny's Natural History. Due to geographic and political isolation, Piedmont was without a natural port for most of its history, which made exportation treacherous and expensive. This left the Piedmontese with little incentive to expand production. Sixteenth-century records show a mere 14% of the Bassa Langa under vine -- most of that low-lying and farmed polyculturally. In the nineteenth century the Marchesa Falletti, a frenchwoman by birth, brought eonologist Louis Oudart from Champagne to create the first dry wines in Piemonte. Along with work in experimental vineyards at Castello Grinzane conducted by Camilo Cavour -- later Conte di Cavour, leader of the Risorgimento and first Prime Minister of Italy -- this was the birth of modern wine in the Piedmont. At the heart of the region and her reputation are Alba and the Langhe Hills. This series of weathered outcroppings south of the Tanaro River is of maritime origin and composed mainly of limestone, sand and clay, known as terra bianca. In these soils -located mainly around the towns of Barolo and Barbaresco -- the ancient allobrogica, now Nebbiolo, achieves its renowned fineness and power.
