Made from a blend of 75% Tempranillo, 11% CS, 11% Syrah and 3% Merlot, aged for 12 months in FR & US oak barrels, 75% new. Deep ruby colour. Medium+ intensity aroma of plums, leather, cherries, earth, hint of cedar. Medium+ body, bold and powerful, juicy and round structure, medium acidity, medium+ tannins. (1270 views)
Tasted by Zoro1122 on 5/18/2023 & rated 92 points: Nice one!! Medium purple in colour, Initially oak is nice but a bit dominant, an hour of decant helps to balance the flavours. Pretty nice on the nose already. Sweet notes of plum and vanilla. Palate then blackberry, bit of plum and nicely integrated oaky notes of vanilla and bit of coconut. Finish is absolutely harmonious and long. Drink nor by 2028. can even be enjoyed below 16 degrees, try it out. Incredible value for the money! :) (1454 views)

Tasted by Paul D on 7/6/2022 & rated 85 points: From Alma, La Santa, Lanzarote. Ripe blackcurrant fruited nose, touch of mocha. Medium/full bodied, ripe dark fruits, soft tannins, subdued acidity, finishes a little flat. Attractive in an obvious kind of way but ultimately a bit dull. (2193 views)
Tasted by Duncan.dewhurst@gmail.com on 4/24/2022 & rated 91 points: Intense nose of blackberry, cherry and chocolate

Nice acidity on the palate and well rounded. Not a huge amount of tannins

Subtle finish with some vanilla and oak notes (1901 views)
Tasted by apple1813 on 1/2/2022 & rated 90 points: 2017 Abadia Retuerta Selección Especial was a decent example of Tempranillo-based blend on the riper end of the spectrum. The developing Sardon de Duero wine was clear and deep ruby in colour without any sediments. It was decanted for two hours to open up the aromatics, and then transferred back into the bottle. Aromas of ripe dark cherry, fig and crushed violet were followed by dark chocolate, smoke and a hint of balsamic.

The mouthfeel was dry and full-bodied, with medium levels of acidity and medium-high level of chalky tannin. There were flavours of blackcurrant, cassis, toffee and a hint of earth in a medium spiced finish. The 14.5% alcohol was manifested through its spices, ripe dark fruit flavours and rich mouthfeel. While it was agreeable and somewhat balanced, it was not on the same level as the 2015 vintage that showed more depth and salinity. The empty bottle weighed 600 grams.

The blend is composed of 75% Tempranillo, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Syrah and 3% Merlot. The wine is raised in a combination of French and American oak barrels for twelve months. (2376 views)
Tasted by Jules197 on 12/22/2021: Très bon, du goût (1426 views)
Tasted by John Kraainem on 5/15/2021 & rated 85 points: Lovely smooth plums with vanilla and chocolate. (1823 views)

U.K. Importer (Addt'l Info)

Abadía Retuerta, located in the heart of the Spanish wine region known as the Golden Mile, where the most prestigious wine-makers converge.

Our philosophy, started by Pascal Delbeck and consolidated by Angel Anocíbar (named Winemaker of the Year by the International Wine Challenge 2005) is to produce wines that reflect the character of each terroir, which is the essence of estate wines.

The result is a range of exceptional wines, the most emblematic of which is our “Selección Especial”, made from a selection of the best grapes from the 54 plots on our estate, and recently awarded as Best Wine in the World by the International Wine Challenge 2005.

On our 700-hectare estate, you can also enjoy the charms of wine tourism, partaking in activities such as commented wine tasting and guided visits to the 12th century Santa María de Retuerta Abbey.

Tempranillo Blend

Tempranillo is the backbone of wines made ihvhhcn the best well-known Spanish regions Rioja and Ribera del Duero, but is also grown as far afield as Mexico and Australia.

As a flavor profile, red fruits like strawberries and cherries can predominate - but with a rustic edge. The Many wines made from Tempranillo will spend a few years in barrel and bottle before reaching the consumers . Many Tempranillo-based wines see a few years of oak - add that to a few years of bottle and the wine can give a subtle - and occasionaly not-so-subtle - leathery mouthfeel. The combination of the tart fruit and tannins make this wine very food friendly.

Selección Especial

*Quality wines to drink on any occasion

Spain

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
