Tasted by alba_br on 1/18/2018 & rated 89 points: Muito bom. Pronto para beber. (2143 views)
Tasted by vewheeler on 2/13/2016 & rated 88 points: Medium intensity plums, oak and some herbal notes on the nose. Tanins are still present but very fine now, more dark fruits and dark chocolate giving a slightly unpleasant bitterness. Overall it is dominated by oak and alcohol, with a medium acidity This wine is still developing, although I am not certain that the flavours it has are going to create anything of real interest. Disappointing. (2863 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 10/21/2013 & rated 89 points: Nice ripe modern wine (5258 views)
Tasted by Bjha on 5/30/2013 & rated 93 points: - Garnet color with medium forming legs. It's in total harmony with a medium/full body. Oily texture with a medium finish. (4924 views)
Tasted by Harley1199 on 5/21/2013: Abadia Retuerta Tasting (Bodega Santa Cecilia - Madrid): Dark crimson colour
Chocolate aromas at first giving some complexity. Merlot is there, opulently of plums.
Textbook RdD nose to me.
Tamed tannins in your palate, dry and pretty acid.
Not my kind of.

(5251 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 2/3/2013 & rated 90 points: A night of Spanish wines (mostly RdD) (Scott and Jo's): This was really good. Certainly better than the 07 version. A year more age or better vintage? I don't know. Similar in profile, there is a lot more depth here. Showing more complexity. (4328 views)
(2339 views)
Tasted by PSPatrick on 8/12/2012 & rated 89 points: The wine was bright dark ruby in colour. It was rather tight at first, but opened-up over time. The wine offered some strawberry, some raspberry, some black currant, green asparagus, chocolate, vanilla and hints of coconut and espresso on the nose. On the palate the light- to medium-bodied wine was juicy, with red fruits, strawberry, some black currant, coffee, some vanilla, some chocolate, some tobacco, and with dry but fine tannins. An elegant, easy-drinking wine with decent structure and complexity. A very good effort. I clearly preferred this to the 2007 Retuerta Selección Especial fruit bomb. Might age well. 89+ (2407 views)
Tasted by wdlohr on 2/26/2012 & rated 90 points: This has a very dark rich color with little of a briar green aroma. It surprises with the immediate taste of rich dark fruit mixture balanced by slow but steady tannin which carries the blend well. (1918 views)
Tasted by RussK on 2/18/2012 & rated 91 points: Russk dinner at Korean place w/ Marido and friends. Always good. Always a crowd pleaser. Wish I had more.91+ (1847 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 1/17/2012 & rated 87 points: Dark ruby color with somewhat floral nose. Medium weight on the palate. Plum flavor with good balance by its own but hot and unbalanced with food. Short length, pleasant finish. I would buy this as a week-day wine in a good vintage. (1610 views)
Tasted by M.Batard on 11/28/2011 & rated 88 points: Dark violet color, medium-full body. Black fruit aromas, carrying through to the palate, but quite tannic. Medium finish. (1969 views)
Tasted by njg6gs on 10/28/2011 & rated 91 points: Rich and polished, rather short on finish. (1971 views)
Tasted by PSPatrick on 8/30/2011 & rated 88 points: Interesting wine. We popped the cork and poured the first glass. I would recommend decanting the wine for an hour or so - the dark purple coloured wine was dry and a little awkward at first, started to come around about one hour after opening the bottle, and was probably best on day two. The wine was ripe and creamy but fresh on the nose, showing red fruits, red currant, green apple, green beans and vanilla. On the palate the wine was chewy, ripe and creamy, offering fig, red fruits, red currant, raspberry, vanilla, and Asian spices on the finish. A modern-style, oak-influenced wine. Enjoyable, though I would not enjoy finishing a whole bottle of it. (1912 views)
Tasted by njg6gs on 6/7/2011 & rated 92 points: Intense but elegant, clean on palate. (2097 views)
 Tasted by RussK on 1/8/2011 & rated 90 points: RUSSK GC@Eddie's 90+ (2283 views)
Tasted by RussK on 1/7/2011 & rated 91 points: RUSSK dinner with mark and john at eduardo. sweet, and round and very nice. maybe a touch of america oak. must buy. (38 views) (2458 views)
Tasted by RussK on 1/5/2011 & rated 90 points: RUSSK a couple of nights later. See previous notes. Nose of earth and ceder and some toasty amOak. Taste like Villacruces without the structure. Mostly fat. (2260 views)
Tasted by Pimenta on 11/13/2010 & rated 90 points: Excelente. (2923 views)
Tasted by brigcampbell on 10/22/2010: East Coast Road Trip; 10/19/2010-10/26/2010 (Jersey Shore and NYC): C: magenta
N: touch of heat
P: fruit foward with a probably the merlot making a statement
F: medium but dry finish with tannins and oak (3434 views)
Tasted by JOsgood on 9/22/2010: All I was getting was a ton of OAK. On the nose and on the palate. The oak dominates everything here. No balance to speak of. (2785 views)
Tasted by CkenS on 6/23/2010 & rated 90 points: Tannins were hard at first but this wine really smoothed and balanced out after about 45 minutes of air and became surprisingly luscious. Others were all remarking positively about this wine in comparison to the others we had. Not nearly as complex or as good as a 2001 vintage from this winery but good nevertheless and better than I remember my last bottle of this vintage. (3161 views)
Tasted by 7111 on 6/18/2010 & rated 85 points: No notes. Good but at it's end. (3033 views)
Tasted by Brady D on 4/9/2010 & rated 81 points: Do you like oak?

Opaque purple. Bright red fruit nose. Very silky texture. Massive drying oak tannins. I like tannins, but this wasn't pleasant.

Very international styled, reminiscent of cheap shiraz. Okay wine. Well, really more oaky than okay. (3298 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 3/30/2010 & rated 88 points: Very dark black red violet color; focused, black fruit, berry, floral nose; tart black fruit, charcoal palate; medium-plus finish (2843 views)

U.K. Importer (Addt'l Info)

Abadía Retuerta, located in the heart of the Spanish wine region known as the Golden Mile, where the most prestigious wine-makers converge.

Our philosophy, started by Pascal Delbeck and consolidated by Angel Anocíbar (named Winemaker of the Year by the International Wine Challenge 2005) is to produce wines that reflect the character of each terroir, which is the essence of estate wines.

The result is a range of exceptional wines, the most emblematic of which is our “Selección Especial”, made from a selection of the best grapes from the 54 plots on our estate, and recently awarded as Best Wine in the World by the International Wine Challenge 2005.

On our 700-hectare estate, you can also enjoy the charms of wine tourism, partaking in activities such as commented wine tasting and guided visits to the 12th century Santa María de Retuerta Abbey.

Tempranillo Blend

Tempranillo is the backbone of wines made ihvhhcn the best well-known Spanish regions Rioja and Ribera del Duero, but is also grown as far afield as Mexico and Australia.

As a flavor profile, red fruits like strawberries and cherries can predominate - but with a rustic edge. The Many wines made from Tempranillo will spend a few years in barrel and bottle before reaching the consumers . Many Tempranillo-based wines see a few years of oak - add that to a few years of bottle and the wine can give a subtle - and occasionaly not-so-subtle - leathery mouthfeel. The combination of the tart fruit and tannins make this wine very food friendly.

Selección Especial

*Wine that showcase the varietal characteristic

*Quality wines to drink on any occasion

Spain

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
