Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.4 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 8 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Robmcl920 on 3/28/2024 & rated 93 points: The '20 Coutet is an attractive, fresh and lighter example of Sauternes. This was tasted next to the '19 and '20 D'Yquem, and was able to hold its own. It was much closer to the '20 D'Yquem than the '19, but of the three was the lightest in terms of concentration and perception of sweetness.

On the nose, I found apricot, ginger, sweet spices, and floral honey. On the palate, the wine is medium to light in body with tangy apricot fruit, honey, white floral tones and spices, with good acidity, very fresh and vibrant. It does not come across as super sweet, so I can see this being a good Sauternes to pair with food. Compared to the D'Yquem wines, this does come across as a bit short in body and concentration. In a way, this seems like it needs age more than the D'Yquem, showing a bit less expressive and more coiled. (608 views)
Tasted by remyworldpeace on 3/2/2024 & rated 92 points: No detailed note but score during WSET. Good but needs more age (687 views)
Tasted by chatters on 11/17/2023: Apricot, pineapple, orange, smidge of sulphur, tasted oak, sweet spice, a little caramel underpin. Juicy, sweet, slight woody texture, a little burnt jam quality to the fruit which shows pineapple and apricot jam. The touch of bitterness on the finish isn't off-putting...Okay (1226 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 3/21/2023 & rated 94 points: The attention-seeking nose grabs you due to all of its honeysuckle, candied pineapple, orange blossoms, apricots, and mango drizzled with honey, and spice. The wine is perfectly balanced between all of its sweetness and vibrancy, leaving you with ample freshness to provide lift and cut to all of its honeyed, tropical fruits. Drink from 2023-2050.  Tasted by Roger Patterson on 1/26/2023 & rated 87 points: Big but lacking complexity. At UGC LA (1785 views)
Tasted by vvWine.ch on 5/22/2021 & rated 93 points: 92-93 vvPunkte Verhaltene Nase, zeigt Blütentee, Aprikosen, Pfirsich, Rosmarinblüten und etwas Rauch. (April/Mai 2021) (3753 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 5/20/2021 & rated 95 points: Lemon meringue pie, honeysuckle, candied pineapple, orange blossoms, flowers and spice create an enthralling perfume. Sweet, yet zesty, rich and racy with a shot of cinnamon and honey-slathered yellow tropical fruits and vanilla that linger. This decadent sweet treat works because of its balancing acidity that keeps everything fresh and vibrant. 94-96 (2658 views)
Tasted by Shrewsram on 4/23/2021 & rated 93 points: Fragrant, fresh nose with excellent definition and pronounced Rock Rose, light spicing, elegant notes of tea.
Nice botrytis here, very clean honey, some sunny touches and complex notes of ginger root. (1752 views)

Château Coutet

Producer website - Read more about Chateau Coutet

A prestigious 1er Cru Classé estate, Château Coutet is the oldest and largest property in Barsac. The estate has been owned by the Baly family since 1977. The name ‘Coutet’ is derived from the Gascon’s word for knife and the estate’s wines are renowned for their fresh ‘cutting’ acidity and crisp lively palate. Château Coutet has 35 hectares of vineyards planted to Sémillon (75%), Sauvignon Blanc (23%) and Muscadelle (2%). In their youth the wines show beguiling aromas of citrus, tropical fruits, white flowers, honey and ginger, revealing more candied fruit, gingerbread notes with age. The wine is matured in oak barriques for 18 months.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
