Community Tasting Notes (average 89.6 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 20 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by rs on 2/21/2015 & rated 93 points: Fabulous! Problably the Paul Sauer I've tasted. In perfect harmony right now. Pure fruit and melted tannins and striking balance. Still plenty of life in this. One of the most ageworthy wines from ZA. (2674 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 9/22/2014 & rated 88 points: Weekly tasting group #135; A mixed set of wines. (@ The factory by MN): The bouquet is a bit dusty with ripe red fruits, some spiciness and vanilla. On the palate juicy red and black forest fruits, a good balance between acidity and sweetness and friendly tannin. Not the best Paul Sauer ever produced, but certainly a beautiful wine. Ready now. (3211 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 8/24/2014 & rated 89 points: Birth year wines (plus some extra's) (@ JB): Just a few notes: Beautiful bouquet with cassis and pleasant oak. On the palate Cabernet and some bell pepper and a beautiful classical style of wine. Ready now, but no hurry. (3051 views)
Tasted by mwanasheria on 4/20/2014 & rated 92 points: Quite funky bouquet of herbs, chocolate. On the palate smoke, licorice, cassis. Really quite good. (3076 views)
Tasted by Timbalimba on 12/7/2013 & rated 91 points: Open, generous nose, plenty of cedar at first, later giving way to Margaux-like sweet cassis. Full bodied but not overpowering on the palate, juicy fruit, cedar, oak, toasted Asian spice. Clean, long finish. Very nice, balanced, textbook claret copy. No sign of burnt rubber or heat. Drink or keep. (3306 views)
Tasted by David Meddings on 1/14/2013 & rated 92 points: Decanted 1 hour. Notes from memory. This was open for business and very enjoyable. Full on bouquet of liquorice, plums, spices and cigar. Palate long, silky and immensely enjoyable. (1957 views)
Tasted by mwanasheria on 11/19/2012 & rated 90 points: Quite wild and funky. Initially I did not know whether there was a funny cellar note in the nose, but I grew to like it. Full bodied with tobacco, licorice, game, underwood. (1720 views)
Tasted by tracydo on 1/19/2012 & rated 85 points: Drink soon (2424 views)
Tasted by urga on 3/28/2011 & rated 89 points: 14% alc., dark garnet, youthful color with just slightly bright edges.
elegant nose of red currant, sour cherries, some leather, a little earth, still very fruit driven nose, fresh.
on the palate mouthwatering acidity, again red berries and sour cherries, no secondary or exceptional flavors, the acidity maybe stands out a little too much, otherwise elegant and balanced.
sappy medium finish.
for me, this is a very nice food wine, no 90 pointer, but a very nice and enjoyable effort. (2480 views)
Tasted by David Meddings on 11/21/2009 & rated 90 points: Decanted 1 hour, served at 15C. Dark crimson. Bouquet of cassis, raspberry, some whiffs of cinammon, a faint vegetal note, and a hint of oak. On the palate this is suave and supple in attack and quickly builds to a complex mid-palate dominated by dark berries held in check by fine dusty tannins and a strong core of acidity. Medium to full bodied and a good lengthed final. This went very well with beef roast and I look forward to the next bottle after another year or two. (2983 views)
Tasted by Northern on 3/2/2007 & rated 89 points: Nice Bordeaux look-alike. 14% according to the label. Ruby colour with a clear rim, on the nose bell peppers, sweet cassis, earth, cherries. Medium bodied with soft tannins, no SA smokiness, no heat. Not very long. Nice wine, would buy more if slightly cheaper (approx $34). (3176 views)
Tasted by Mlermontov on 2/23/2007 & rated 92 points: BDX blends offline (blind) (Fairway): one of my favorites tonight - this is trully excellent. anyone know where to get some? didnt find any on cellartracker.
rich eucaliptus on the nose, seems like a ton of fruit but the palatte is smooth and with beautifull mineral tones, excellent balabnce and acidity, blackberries, tobaco. this is trully delicious. (3823 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 1/11/2006 & rated 89 points: Monthly Tasting Group HWS #009; Bordeaux blends worldwide. (By me): Blood red. Impressive deep bouquet, keeps on developing with new dimensions. Wood. In the taste a lot of juice, some sweetness. A fruit bomb, blackberries and black currants goinig through your mouth. Soft tannins in the finish. Although a wonderful wine, the finish is where it lacks a bit; a little short. (3502 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.
