| Community Tasting Notes (average 88.8 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 7 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by alamoave on 3/1/2009 & rated 89 points: Very pleasant white that is surprisingly dry, with a clean finish like a good savinierres, and a worthy alternative to serve to the unsuspecting chard addict (1681 views) | | Tasted by abbulf on 11/26/2008: The nose has lots of grapefruit and fresh grass, minerals and some honey. Crisp and very nice. The front palate is a bit anonymous. Then it grows in weight, and explodes in a medium long finish of spice and pepper. You can feel the alcohol (13,9%) in the finish, but it is not disturbing. The wine is not very acidic, but there is a linear elegance in the mouth that I find appealing. Definitely a would buy again at 22 $. (1944 views) | | Tasted by peternelson on 10/24/2008 & rated 88 points: Rosso: Very nice, med. full; white frt, flowers; solid. (1305 views) | | Tasted by CADomer on 9/30/2008 & rated 90 points: Best Chenin Blanc from the Foxen boys yet. Really good stuff. Tropical fruit all over the place with this wine and had crisp acidity that actually paired fairly well with the spicy mexican food I drank it with. (1770 views) | | Tasted by bobfrank on 6/10/2008 & rated 89 points: Enjoyed with BBQ chicken. (1821 views) | | Tasted by nwk on 1/29/2008: Nice melon and wax flavors in a full, bbl ferment?, style of chenin. Just manages to stay alive enough though it is a bit heavy and tropical. (968 views) | | Tasted by GalvezGuy on 9/28/2007 & rated 88 points: Santa Barbara Tasting Day (Foxen Canyon Run and Solvang): Classic chenin on the nose with peach and lychee. Bone dry on the palate, with flavors closer to Loire than Cali. Nice finish, very well done, would pair well with seafood. (1669 views) |
| Foxen Producer website
Bill Wathen and Dick Doré have been making wine together since 1985, when they founded Foxen Winery & Vineyard at the historic Rancho Tinaquaic in northern Santa Barbara County.
Since that time, their dedication has remained the same—the creation of very small-production, vineyard-designated wines using a "minimalist" approach to winemaking. The winery is named in memory of William Benjamin Foxen, an English sea captain and Dick's great-great grandfather, who came to Santa Barbara in the early 1800's. In 1837, this Santa Barbara County pioneer purchased the Rancho Tinaquaic, a Mexican Land Grant that originally totaled nearly 9000 acres and comprised most of what is now known as Foxen Canyon. Captain Foxen adopted the distinctive "anchor" as his ranch cattle brand, which has become a trademark of the winery. It is very fitting that FOXEN has made its home on the 2000-acre Rancho Tinaquaic, which remains in family hands.2006 Foxen Old Vines Chenin Blanc Ernesto Wickenden VineyardWINEMAKER NOTES: This is our third vintage of Chenin Blanc from this historic vineyard - marking its 40th birthday. 2006 yields were moderate, and the fruit was clean and perfect. We fermented 70% in stainless steel to preserve the "minerality" and purity of the fruit; while the remaining 30% was barrel fermented, where we stirred the lees regularly that contributed to its texture and richness. The finished wine show chalky, "stony" aromas with intense lemon blossom. In the mouth, the chalky minerals continue, carrying lemon peel, kiwi, and quince - with bright natural acidity. This wine would be a perfect match with oysters on a hlaf shell or fine Japanese cuisine. 750 cases.Chenin Blanc Varietal character (Appellation America)USAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Central Coasthttp://www.ccwinegrowers.org/links.html
