Community Tasting Notes (average 90.1 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 22 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by rjquillin on 1/5/2020: Killed this one off a couple weeks ago; opened 12/15. No notes, but no regrets pulling the cork. Three more to go; I'll not rush. Cathy makes them to age well, no exception here. (1493 views)
Tasted by klezman on 3/9/2014: Right from PnP this was great. Truffle, cassis, earth, intensity, plum, etc. Perfectly balanced and delicious.

Continued to get better over the next couple horus in the dencanter. Just a delicious and balanced wine. In a great window right now, imo. (4698 views)
Tasted by PJRONeill on 6/25/2012 & rated 93 points: At Bar Boulud this evening, just a great bottle of old school, well aged, restrained and elegant Cali Cab. Still ruby in color, lovely medium intense nose of blackberry and blueberry with some pine/eucalyptus notes, terrifically harmonious mouthfeel with well integrated tannins, a wonderfully balanced ABV at 12.8%, plush black fruits, and a generous finish. This is drinking perfectly now, its a lesson in restraint and shows how well this traditional style of Cali cab can age. (4456 views)
Tasted by sfern on 1/21/2012 & rated 93 points: Drinking beautifully now, gorgeous nose; find a reason to open one asap! (4874 views)
Tasted by no leashes on 9/20/2011 & rated 85 points: The anise has taken over, this almost tastes port-like. Not enjoyable, will try again in a few hours. (5019 views)
Tasted by mathwonk on 10/17/2010: This was delightful. Whereas the 2000 we had was almost as young as the 2004, this 1992 was obviously quite aged and evolved, but not yet over the hill There were no hard edges left at all, and the wine had become light, fragrant and delicious. Although I have had many aged wines that tasted older than this, I did not enjoy them as much as this. I.e. to me this is at the peak point of aging and I would not wait any longer to drink this. It was not yet orange, but a light purplish red, and the taste had a hint of beginning to "turn" but not offensively so, and it dissipated in a few minutes. Of the two bottles the first had a cork that broke upon opening but we pushed it in and then strained the wine into a decanter and it was fine. The one that came out clean tasted a little better, but not a big difference. Purchased from UVA, in Brooklyn, NY. Thanks to cellar tracker members for notes on this wine, causing us to choose it over the 1997. (4895 views)
Tasted by dougsmith on 9/20/2010 & rated 91 points: Deep ruby color. Somewhat funky, earthy nose with elements of fruit, smoke, dry leaves and black fruit, with a touch of floral. Medium bodied on the palate with some fine tannin on the finish. (2857 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 8/27/2010 & rated 92 points: Fight Night Wines VI; 8/27/2010-8/28/2010 (my place): nose: well balanced and classic nose of dill, mint, dark red cherries, cassis, vanilla, herb tones, and some bits of american oak

taste: full bodied with tones of dark red cherries, cassis, vanilla, bits of herbs, dill, anise, red currants. Very well balanced with good tannins still showing themselves, but good layering as well

overall: All California Cabernet should strive to be like this. Beautifully balanced with nice and warm fruit that really screams from the get go. (2941 views)
Tasted by Grand Cru Fr on 4/8/2010 & rated 90 points: Excellent Calif Cab. Even at 18 years still tasted fresh and fruit forward. A great example of the Cali style. (2470 views)
Tasted by muchomaas on 2/4/2010 & rated 90 points: surprising wine of the night for me as I wasn't sure what to expect. very nice cab, direct flavors. (2534 views)
Tasted by Blair Curtis on 3/14/2009 & rated 93 points: Really superb wine. Purchased this bottle a few years ago from Cathy Corison as she took my girlfriend and I through a tasting of her wines at Corison in Napa Valley. She offered some library wines with impeccable storage. Her assistant winemaker felt that in a recent vertical the 1992 showed best, so we bought that one. This wine lived up. Elegance (in this case, not code for no fruit...) and balance. A wine with lovely symmetry and great length. An example of what should be done more in Napa. Nothing overdone or out of place. And aging very gracefully. (3011 views)
Tasted by DUSTOFF on 1/9/2009 & rated 92 points: This is exactly what I love about Corison. Elegant, precise, and exactly what a balanced Cabernet should be. (3253 views)
Tasted by Johann Von Mastiff on 1/4/2009 & rated 85 points: Not a bad wine but this bottle has a bit of reduction that is giving it a little too much burnt rubber. (2758 views)
Tasted by no leashes on 11/29/2007 & rated 91 points: Delicious, well integrated dark cherry, coffee, currant flavors, medium bodied, great texture. Drink now. (2991 views)
Tasted by eclpm2 on 8/20/2007: Lovely. Lavendar and violet notes. (3087 views)
Tasted by psmith on 8/20/2006 & rated 91 points: A really pretty and well-integrated nose with lots of cedar and red fruits. Medium-body and with typically sappy, well-textured body. Great length and balance throughout, but for a touch of alcohol on the finish. An excellent Napa Cabernet with lots of time left - it's unfortunate so few make them like this anymore. (3429 views)
Tasted by wahoff on 4/30/2005 & rated 88 points: La Lagune Vertical (Brussels, Belgium): Evolved color. Good fruit on the nose. At maturity: well integrated tannins, still a lot of body. Lacks somewhat complexity; average length. Very good wine.

Couleur évoluée. Nez bien fruité. A maturité: tannins bien intégrés, encore beaucoup de corps. Manque quelque peu de complexité. Très bon vin. (5185 views)

Corison

Producer website

Corison Winery is located just south of the town of St. Helena in the upper Napa Valley. They are on the west side of Highway 29, about a quarter mile north of Zinfandel Lane, at 987 St. Helena Highway, Saint Helena, CA 94574.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
