Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 429 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by cephomer on 1/28/2024 & rated 93 points: Drank last nite w/Blancos & Waldmans. Nose of black cherries, leather & tobacco. Medium body is somewhat round, and still demonstrates good level of black cherry fruit. Tannins are resolved, notes of leather, dried fruit, leather, earth/garigue and meat. Pleasing long finish highlights the tertiary elements of this wine. All in all, a CdP that is fully mature, and drinking quite well. No reason to hang on any futher however. (817 views)
Tasted by wineton.mee on 1/22/2024 & rated 90 points: Ripe and hot cherry fruit, plums, a touch jammy. Big rustic tannins too. Thought this Italian and maybe super Tuscan with Merlot of sorts. On hindsight this is rather classic of CDP, I just wish the heat is less overt here. Feels like it’s gonna need quite a bit more time lying down. (924 views)
Tasted by bon vivant on 1/19/2024 & rated 93 points: At first a bit funky and even suspected a hint of TCA but thankfully this was not the case as it started to clear up nicely and tasted solid. It followed into a small surface decanter for 2 hrs and at that point it started to show beautiful balance between red and dark fruit, spice and Garigue. It ended up being a very clean bottle with elegance and nice mix of subtle flavors with some nice notes of leather and herbs on an old style (but not funky CNDP) which was very enjoyable. Side note Susan who is not a massive CNDP really enjoyed it . (857 views)
Tasted by Eric Wright on 12/25/2023 & rated 91 points: Surprisingly vibrant for the age. Some light bricking color. Mature tertiary notes on the nose, but not just port. Fruit almost fully faded. Enjoyed alongside a bottle of the 2019 which was overpowering. Nonetheless, this was lovely (834 views)
93 pts (1258 views)
Tasted by VinhoVerde on 10/21/2023 & rated 90 points: Light to medium red color with light brownish halo. Peppery, soft forward style. Mid-weight Chateauneuf, soft light finish. Enjoyable now, but drink quickly. (768 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 2/19/2023 & rated 94 points: Ski trip - Four wino familes; 2/17/2023-2/20/2023 (WISP Resort): Fully mature nose displaying ripe dark red fruit, strawberry jam, cherry pie, leather, strong tobacco, garrigue, roasted meat and earth. Fully integrated palate, slightly dry red fruit, nicely layered dry red fruit, silky and round, medium acidity, earthy mineral, and a medium to long dry red fruit driven finish with tobacco and leather at the end. This was served outside with bonfire which was perfect. It is drinking nicely. (2142 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 1/11/2023 & rated 92 points: Monthly Tasting Group HWS: Clos des Papes (By AH): The bouquet is at first slightly locked, but shows quickly what it has in store; garrigue, intense berries and cherries. On the palate a juicy start with a lot of garrigue, beautiful fruits like e.g. blueberries, good acidity and tannin and a good length. Beautifully fresh wine at its peak now. (2361 views)
Tasted by Munch on 1/10/2023 & rated 89 points: This is definitely fully mature and doesn’t seem suited for longer aging. Need to try a magnum and see if it’s a bit fresher Still very enjoyable with classic CdP mature flavor profile A bit musty on the nose, very transparent light brick red with a touch of haze. This did open up over 3 hours in open bottle then glass and is a pleasure to drink. (1485 views)
Tasted by Eric on 12/17/2022 & rated 89 points: A promising but ultimately disappointing bottle. White pepper and faint garrigue move to a plummy and ultimately figgy palate. Lots of dried fruit notes on top of juicy Grenache. This is not over the hill but clearly very mature and declining. (1910 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 11/24/2022 & rated 90 points: Thanksgiving in New Hope with the family: Last bottle from this vintage. Decanted for 90 minutes prior to drinking. This bottle had a bit of funk when first opened. Had this with the turkey and sides...

Last bottle 5 years ago - notes from that tasting;"Bright ruby color, no browning. Nose of dried red fruits, baking spice, cedar, some smokiness. Palate of dark cherry, plums, herbs, spice/cinnamon. Mid palate showed savory notes to complement the fruit. Long and layered finish."

Mostly consistent, this bottle seemed to lack depth and slightly off on the mid palate. The culprit most likely CdP bottle variance, not age. This one was good not great on this showing. Good thing the turkey was a hit...:) (1373 views)
Tasted by Karl Henrik on 9/10/2022 & rated 93 points: Still delivering, sadly this is my last bottle of 2000. Gets even better in the glass as time goes by. (1202 views)
Tasted by VDLT Wine on 7/29/2022: Such a pleasure to catch a wine at what seems like it’s optimal state. This “old school” Clos des Papes was impeccably balanced and subtly nuanced. The red fruit flavors were bright and fresh, yet evolved and so delicious. Hard to imagine this could offer anything more. (1249 views)
Tasted by Milos on 6/3/2022 & rated 92 points: Drank together with the 1993. Bright dark red colour; bright. The nose is forward with dark red and black fruit, mineral notes and earthy complexity. The palate is bright, with great balance and ripe fine tannins in the finish. Perfect accompaniment to a grilled steak at Mayrik. Drinking well now yet still quite primary. Will keep for another decade and likely more. Showed a hair better than my previous bottle in January. (1662 views)
Tasted by Amberissey on 5/7/2022 & rated 91 points: Lots of age in the appearance, tremendous clarity, you can see straight through it. Dried herbs, balsamic, iron, dry undergrowth and barbecued meat. Sweet cured meat, Parma ham or something on the attack, giving way to kirsch and over ripe or baked red berries on the mid palette, and more barbecue on the finish. More typical of the appellation than the 2003 that we had a few weeks ago. Also wonderful. (1649 views)
Tasted by paintinginacave on 5/7/2022 & rated 94 points: Stood up for two weeks. Three hour slow oxidation. Showing far more age than you’d expect for a wine of this age with a deep garnet core fading to a pale garnet outer edge. Bears a passing resemblance aromatically to the 2003 where cherry is once again centre stage only with a little less purity and intensity. However, it needs to be stated that the nose of the 2003 was truly exceptional so we’re taking a very high bar here. Rusty nails, balsamic, red liquorice, lavender, a touch of ground green peppercorns, and lightly grilled red meat join the party. A highly concentrated palate impresses greatly with ultra-ripe red berries, cherry kirsch liqueur, Prosciutto di Parma, and the aforementioned grilled red meats. At a beautiful point in its evolution. Outstanding. (1413 views)
Tasted by Javachip on 4/29/2022 & rated 93 points: Decanted 1 hour. Clear garnet-blood red color with bricking at the rim. Beguiling notes of juicy red cherries, raspberries, pomegranates, roses, lavender, garrigue, herbs de Provence, beef jus, hint of mincemeat. Medium-full body, seamless, balanced, aging gracefully. (1224 views)
Tasted by SGoenophile on 1/31/2022 & rated 90 points: Decanted 1 hour. Light body, tannins fully resolved. Musty note on the palate. Fruit seems to be fading. Seems to be past it’s prime on a gentle decline. Quite average and forgettable. 14% abv. (1651 views)
Tasted by Milos on 1/22/2022 & rated 92 points: Colour indicates maturity; the nose is forward red fruit, lots of complexity, palate silky and reasonably well balanced but the alcohol does show little high; enjoyable now and not likely getting any better. (1582 views)
Tasted by Zitan on 12/31/2021 & rated 94 points: Frickin’ gorgeous - right at the top or a tiny bit past - tastes like Provence - floral and earthy and spicy and feminine - secondary spicy sweetness at the very end - drink ‘em if you got ‘em - Happy New Year! (1337 views)
Tasted by beatles on 11/10/2021 & rated 91 points: Soft, friendly, sexy, open with sweet fruit and tannins fully dissolved. Very typical for the vintage, mature and ready to drink. No need to hold.
#ChezAvril (2237 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 7/28/2021 & rated 93 points: Refined, elegant, soft and silky, the sweet red fruits are spicy, vibrant, clean and pure. Fully mature, medium-bodied, charming and fresh, the peppery, earthy, herbal strawberry cherry and raspberry finish hit the spot. There is no reason to hold this any longer. (4108 views)
Tasted by thomaskeil on 6/28/2021 & rated 93 points: Elected to not decant, left open for 3 hours prior to serving. Lighter in color than 6 years ago. Complexity and expressiveness have were both in play. Layers of fresh and mature aromas and flavors. Very balanced with light, silky tannins and a good dose of acidity. Long finish. (1976 views)
Tasted by Vini Ciclismo on 6/11/2021 & rated 91 points: BBC Long weekend 2021; 6/11/2021-6/13/2021: smooth, earthy, silky, classic flavours (1938 views)
Tasted by SAND on 5/29/2021 & rated 90 points: APPEARANCE: Medium garnet. A lot of sediment. 14.0% ABV.
NOSE: Plum marmalade, old leather, farmyard, well hung meat, camphor, sage, estragon, dates, honey, black currant juice. (90p)
TASTE: Mature, lovely sweet fruit, medium rich body, plums, dates, figs. Slightly drying finish. (89-90p)
OVERALL: Definitely mature but still drinking very nicely. TOTAL SCORE 90 points. (1850 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
