Tasted by Decanting Queen on 10/26/2019 flawed bottle: Sadly this was corked. I say sadly because the tannins had completely mellowed but there was a perfect acidity and some nice sweet fruit poking through. I smelled the TCA right away but there was so much fruit I thought maybe it wasn’t actually corked and would blow off so I drank a bit. It really was so good under that nasty mildew note but I couldn’t get past it. (3633 views)
Tasted by andyf on 4/18/2019 & rated 96 points: Wunderful and not expensive wine. Still great to drink. Last bottle unfortunately. (2158 views)

Tasted by callmeacab22 on 1/19/2019 & rated 93 points: Bottled was stored in a friend's controlled wine cellar. Wine and cork were in excellent condition. Full bodied, great deep color and nose, and flavors that just seem to linger from start to a long finish. Unfortunately this was my last bottle. (1764 views)
Tasted by nmoreilly on 12/25/2018 & rated 93 points: My last bottle. Still in very good shape and can't see it getting any better. Drink em you got em (1274 views)
Tasted by tinycellar on 9/3/2018 & rated 92 points: Been sitting my cellar since 2000. Lovely, cherry, plum, nose and taste that matched the nose precisely. Tannin still holding albeit light. Silky, long finish. Hits the spot. Drink now. (1292 views)
Tasted by AV2012 on 5/23/2018 flawed bottle: Corked or flawed. (1425 views)
Tasted by JS1056 on 12/24/2017 & rated 92 points: Decanted for about 3 hours.
Very structured wine. Dark fruit with some tobacco and spice box. Tannins are firm but resolved. The wine is in balance.
A very good age cab but just missing that extra something that makes it really memorable. (1636 views)
Tasted by Redteeth on 12/5/2017: The cork fell to pieces. But, the wine was pretty good. It has a bit of a funk initially, but then opened up and was enjoyable. it is definitely an old wine experience while showing the beauty of these old style Robert Mondavi Napa Cabs. (1613 views)
Tasted by orange boy on 6/10/2017 & rated 96 points: not a easy 96 guy but this was amazing. Drank over 3 days and held its core. Dark fruit and balanced aged tannins. Full complex wine without the austere of a Bordeaux (2879 views)
Tasted by nmoreilly on 5/29/2017 & rated 92 points: See previous notes, would add drink me you got em, ready if not slightly past ready (2642 views)
Tasted by JKelly05 on 5/15/2017: Ok bear w/ me...
Ruby core, slightly oxidized bricking to the rim.
Musty red fruits, smells old world, some candied dark cherry, violet florals, hint of vanilla oak.
Med+ body, soft and plush, finishes long, alcohol and tannins are integrated beautifully, acid rip balances.
This was an experience for me. The wine sang to me and consumed me. Ethereal, wine is balanced, silky red fruits dance across the tongue and down the throat coating and finishing long and clean. Cherry medicinal notes, green herbs, black pepper, vanilla.
Apologies, may be ridiculous, but this is as perfect as an experience as i've had w/ a wine. (2339 views)
Tasted by efeldhake@yahoo.com on 1/15/2017 & rated 91 points: Bright garnet in color. Nose of red fruits, cherries, tobacco and hint of menthol. Tastes of cherries, green olives, tobacco, and hint of earth. Took an hour to open. Was very austere for the first 30 minutes, but opened nicely with great balance of fruits and acid after a half hour. At its peak but should drink well for several years. (2539 views)
Tasted by BBoulais on 12/2/2016 & rated 90 points: So fun when you drink a wine that is at its best.Should have bought more or should i say my dad could have given me a couple more.§ (2691 views)

Couldn't believe this is a 1997, still at it's peak with intense fruits. (1864 views)

palate:nice integration.manage to display reasonably concentration despite so many years.nice acidity support.pretty decent depth.wud like to hve better finishing.getting lots of graphite finishing with more air.each fresh pour, show gd richness of primary character but subsided after a while.the fruits complement nicely with the secondary notes.

conclusion:seems to me tat tis bttl stil has slite room to improve.if not,its at its prime now.just wonder how many bordeaux wine can perform at such level at this peanut price?? (2417 views)
Tasted by Bordeaux_Jon on 5/23/2016 & rated 95 points: First pour from a coravinned bottle. Wow! This wine had some nose. Over the course of 2 hours, I smelled every kind of black fruit - plum, black currant, cassis, black cherry, and blackberry. Added to that there was oak, walnut notes, vanilla, and an interesting loaminess. Finally, there was a very fresh menthol/mint note like a Heitz Martha's Vineyard Cabernet. The nose was just incredible, and having had, in the past couple years, the 1997 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet, the 1997 Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernet, and the Robert Mondavi Reserve To-Kalon Vineyard Cabernet, I can say that this wine's nose was without a doubt, the best.

However, the palate left some to be desired. The wine did not feel particularly concentrated on the mouth, and the alcohol was a bit noticeable. The finish was somewhat short. Mostly it tasted of black fruit and some oak. It wasn't bad, but a serious disappointment after the nose. Needless to say, I spent 2 hours smelling my 3 ounce pour.

There were some tannins still, so I might argue the wine might just not be mature enough yet. With the nose so primary I could see it going for another 15 years. I really can't believe it's a 1997 or that it's 19 years old.

I debated the 95 score a lot given the palate, but this wine's nose blew away the 2001 Harlan and 2001 Araujo I had a couple weeks back, so it just feels like the wine really earned those points. It's a steal at $55. (2153 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 4/20/2016 & rated 93 points: Wine more than 10 years' old session (Pine Close): Tasted blind. Pop and poured. Drank over 2 hours.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of tobacco, cigar, earth, blackberries, blackcurrant, chocolate. Developed.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14.3%), soft plush medium+ tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of blackcurrant, blackberries, dark chocolate, earth, tobacco, cigar. Long finish.
This felt like a ripe Bordeaux!
Very good quality. Drinking at peak now. Unlikely to improve with further ageing. I think this is probably only 75+% Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot and Malbec softening it up. (2862 views)
Tasted by The Raven on 6/26/2015 & rated 94 points: Smells like heaven! Taste even better! (3162 views)

(Mondavi "Oakville" Cabernet Sauvignon) Great nose of spicy oak, bell pepper, cassis, tar, leather, black fruits. Got deeper and more complex as the night went on. Full palate with nice balance and tremendous richness. Very concentrated. Got that sweet CA fruit. Ripe tannins ... but finishes kind of gritty like a young Bordeaux. Lots of glycerin and fat but does not go over the top. Restrained in it's delivery and ripeness. Very nice stuff and should improve for maybe 10 more years and then hold on for around 7 more.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
