Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 33 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by ccrida on 7/17/2023 & rated 91 points: Stewed red fruits with just a hint of brightness, softened by age made for a nice painting with a rib eye steak, with the acidity cutting through without being sharp. Drink now. (311 views)
Tasted by dmitchell4 on 8/13/2021 & rated 92 points: Drinking beautifully (813 views)
Tasted by mdanyc on 8/1/2020 & rated 91 points: This was great with grilled steak, after about four hours decanted in cellar. Harmonious - feels like it can hold up for several more years. (1038 views)
Tasted by Aravind Asok on 2/21/2019: Very nice on a cold winter night. Nice nose with orange peel and sweet balsamic coated strawberries, a suggestion of caramel on the back end. On the palate, good acidity, and more blood orange and wild strawberry. Finely grained tannin on the finish. Good typicity, esp given the vintage. (1795 views)
Tasted by Enfant sauvage on 1/1/2019: Drinkable but definitely showing the vintage and then some to my taste. Stewed fruit. Not in a ridiculous New World way, but not particularly interesting. (1707 views)
Tasted by dmitchell4 on 4/2/2018: Took to Barry’s for Jean - retirement (2104 views)
Tasted by SpoochMan on 3/9/2018 & rated 92 points: Brought to dinner with Brian and Alpa. Last of 3 bottles, and it drank very smoothly. Consistent with previous notes. This was an excellent buy from Garagiste at $40 (1684 views)
Tasted by Aravind Asok on 1/14/2018: Different from my previous bottle: very fruit forward with loads of sweet strawberry and balsamic. On the palate, good acidity and more fruit. Finished with fairly dense, grainy tannin. (1615 views)
Tasted by zlasker on 12/18/2017 & rated 93 points: Smoothed out and round and lovely. All the power of Montalcino without the rough edges. Eminently quaffable. (1315 views)
Tasted by miadelt on 11/12/2017 & rated 93 points: Very good flavors and intensity. Brunello dryness coming through. (1558 views)
Tasted by RWG on 11/5/2017 & rated 91 points: Very nice full bodied Brunello. Nicely mature, drink now, not too many years ahead. Wood chips, graphite, raspberries. (1063 views)
Tasted by bklynwine on 10/28/2017: Big, dark, sun-baked Sangiovese fruit; very Tuscan and very much ready to drink in terms of integrated (and waning) tannin and acidity; not destined for long term elegance like other vintages, but buy this one at a lower price and enjoy (993 views)
Tasted by jlhkiss on 9/20/2017 & rated 90 points: Consistent with previous notes. Mature and best with food. Technical score: 91. Enjoyment score: 90. (1105 views)
Tasted by SpoochMan on 7/21/2017 & rated 92 points: Brought to going-away dinner for Ryo. No detailed notes. This was a very nice bottle of brunello. Fruit was still very bright and acidity very lively. Drank pretty smoothly. Very good value at $40 from Garagiste. (1155 views)
Tasted by Enfant sauvage on 6/28/2017: Not bad, especially at the fairly low Garagiste price. This definitely shows the vintage, with a bit of stewed fruit, but not to the point of ruining things. I'd also suggest this may have seen a touch of heat in storage or shipping, based on partial seepage, slight protrusion of the cork, and a slight taste of maderization. While this could have been so much more (and in my view, unlike some others below, the acid is the key element that is lacking), still, I wouldn't say I was disappointed. Many of my high acid, natural wine, true believer comrades (with whom I side 95% of the time) would probably belittle this, but I found there to be pleasure in it.

Probably not a rebuy for me but not a write-off either. (1475 views)
Tasted by RWG on 6/11/2017 & rated 91 points: Nice brunello! drinking well now - some sediment. happy camper. Full - tobacco & cinnamon notes. (1214 views)
Tasted by Aravind Asok on 5/19/2017: The damp earth was dominant at first, but after a couple of hours open, this changed significantly. A hint of damp earth, and then loads of sweet strawberry and orange peel. On the palate, great acidity, more sweet strawberry; ever-so-slightly grainy tannic finish.

Day 4 open (in the refrigerator since last opening): much simpler and plain fruity on the nose; shows no real signs of oxidation. On the palate, this is denser and the finish is as tannic with the texture of chewable vitamins. (1111 views)
Tasted by Aravind Asok on 3/19/2017: Pop and pour. Very good. A touch of orange around the edges, but deep ruby red through the center. Great nose, showing loads of orange peel, sandalwood, a touch of coffee, some minty/herbal notes and loads of strawberry and raspberry. On the palate, good acidity, but nice texture; a touch of methol, a bit more coffee and some raspberry liqueur...medicinal herbs and slightly grainy tannins on the finish. Paired well with lasagna bolognese.

Showing very well, but the tannin could softer further.

Day 2: Has softened nicely. This is pretty much ideal. Drink-by dates seem perfectly appropriate if this bottle is any indication. (1449 views)
Tasted by Hermosabritdad on 3/10/2017 & rated 92 points: Amazing how after two hours this became soft and almost sweet red fruit on the palette, after starting in a very closed and unyielding fashion. Very moorish and with this bottle I start to understand the fuss made about this producer couple who are so close to Biondi Santi in location and are ultra Biodynamic in their philosophy. Lesson for me is their wines need a lot of time in the cellar, and then some serious time to breath, but that it is worth the wait. Am going to try and hunt some more down. (1370 views)
Tasted by Rgauvin630 on 2/22/2017 & rated 89 points: Improved after almost 2 hour decant (1216 views)
Tasted by SpoochMan on 2/12/2017 & rated 93 points: Drank this awhile back and forgot to enter notes. But I remember that it was a very nice smooth Brunello that was drinking great. Was a good value at $40 from Garagiste last year. (1093 views)
Tasted by RWG on 2/3/2017 & rated 91 points: Really enjoyed this with a dinner with some good friends. let breathe for about 1H before drinking. Drinking well now. (1085 views)
Tasted by Dalex on 11/23/2016 & rated 92 points: Really enjoyed it. Had next to 1998 argiano and Preffered this. (1099 views)
Tasted by Vinophiliac559 on 11/12/2016 & rated 92 points: Friends Fall Gathering; 11/11/2016-11/12/2016 (Fresno): Solid aged Brunello. Nothing really stood out either good or bad, just a really solid mature Brunello. Typical sour cherry, dried herbs, resolved tannins and nice medium length finish. Good acidity and very nice with food. (1399 views)
Tasted by jlhkiss on 10/26/2016 & rated 91 points: Opened and let air for 30-min prior to lasagna dinner. Pale, cloudy crimson color with a ruby hue. Sour cherries, raspberries, strawberries, wild herbs, and toasty nuts on the nose. The palate is medium, smooth, silky, and linear, bringing black cherries, ripe blackberries, orange rinds, black tea, loads of tobacco, and sweet cassis. The finish is smooth and elegant. Not the best QPR but reasonably good balanced drinking. Fully mature so drink now before 2020. (1006 views)

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
