Tasted by z_willus_d on 11/1/2019 & rated 88 points: In the context of CA Syrah/Pinot in the 2000's, these Copain Tous Ensemble wines really stood out for their restraint, balance and sense of terroir. Somehow in this next decade it seems like more wines are following in this mold, and this once special specimen is now competing with many other, albeit often more expensive, excellent, fresh and vibrant wines from the region. The transparency and precision of those wines render this one almost a bit obtuse, heavy and extracted. Regardless, for a $15-20 bottle of Syrah that's well over a decade old now, this has held up incredibly well. It drinks like a well made CdR that has a couple years of bottle age. The bouquet is somewhat muted plums and cherry drops, but on the palate this is full, mouth filling, and considerably deep and long lasting. The flavors are of plum, dusty blackberries and cherries. It has a creaminess to the fruit, and the structure that has melted through the years has let this maintain a freshness that was once tarry and rubbery - now smooth, semi-sweet, and full. This has lived up to its promise, and even if its simple and slightly uninteresting, it was well made so it's a vastly better wine to drink now than many of the CdP wines from '07 that were 4x the price with their lauded scores.  Tasted by Dbass1979 on 11/7/2018 & rated 93 points: Wow. Great color. Fresh. Beautiful balance with fruit and structure. Seems like it might have another 4 - 6 years in it. (1188 views)
Tasted by Colorado Native 3G on 3/26/2018 & rated 88 points: Dark cherry fruit in color with no signs of age. With decanting of 20 min, the nose is boysenberry, blackberry and a tinge of smoked meat. The fruit is fading, but still very drinkable. The wine is medium bodied with a palate of dark and cherry fruit. Finish is a bit tart with lingering tannins. I estimate this wine was showing at it's peak 2 years ago which seems to correlate with other 2015- 2016 reviews. Drink up soon. (1480 views)
Tasted by JLPwine on 2/4/2016 & rated 89 points: Drinking well now. Enjoyed more than the last bottle a couple years ago. Violet, nice nose and finish. Really enjoyed this. (3453 views)
Tasted by AKeats on 5/24/2015 & rated 90 points: It tastes like blackberry, plum and cherry. (3320 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 3/20/2015 & rated 90 points: At home, last bottle of this on a snowy evening. Decanted and drank over 2 hours.

Color is deep garnet, no signs of age. Nose is savory meats, smoke, baking spices, a bit gamey, interesting and rich. Palate is blackberry, cherry, leather, olives, rust. Savory and meaty like the nose. Medium to long finish.

Should hold at this level for a while, a substantial wine with nice balance. Savory profile not for everyone (3393 views)
Tasted by Bellissimo on 10/23/2014: Dark slight gaminess on the nose. Blackberry, boysenberry, iron, dried leaves. Very interesting sub $20 point. (3563 views)
Tasted by cos82 on 9/26/2014 & rated 88 points: A nice Syrah for the price. Black cherry in color. Nose of raspberry, spice and leather. Initial jolt of cherry fruit, but became very balanced over time. Cherry, leather, pepper and minerals. A nice wine. (3372 views)
Tasted by Bellissimo on 2/3/2014: Got a glass on 2nd night of being opened. Olives, dark fruit, slight herbalnes. Everything nice, restrained and in balance. Still a great by at $20 or less. (2422 views)
Tasted by lewisrise on 9/21/2013 & rated 87 points: Nose of white pepper and raspberries. Red fruits and meat with a finish of cedar. (2548 views)
Tasted by cbbrown3 on 4/2/2013 & rated 90 points: The wine is a nice garnet color. The easy going nose has blackberries, red raspberries, minerals, warm baking spices, black pepper, smoked meat, vanilla, and fresh wild flowers. This has medium body, fairly well integrated tannins, and very nice acidity. The palate is lead by mineral laden fruit, black pepper, and a meaty element. The finish has nice length and adds a touch of dark chocolate. This is in its prime drinking window and I'd recommend opening this one over the next year, maybe two. (3013 views)
Tasted by Bellissimo on 2/1/2013: PnP, consumed over 3+ hours. Nice, reserved, medium weight with blackberry, boysenberry and minerals showing thoughout the journey. Balance is key here and the best glass was the last glass. (2984 views)
Tasted by Bellissimo on 8/9/2012: PnP, did't take detailed notes. Had one glass and hope to follow up next day with additional notes. Reserved dark fruits, rocks, minerality, excellent balance. Not in your face; nice and reserved. (3791 views)
Tasted by Lord Rodney on 8/2/2012 & rated 90 points: This was a real charmer! Deep complex nose of black tea and herbs. Lots of blackberries! (3324 views)
Tasted by JLPwine on 7/22/2012 & rated 82 points: Last place in the blind wine tasting, but we enjoyed. Peppery, spice and some berry. Violet in color, medium body. (2751 views)

Tasted by Scotty M on 5/15/2012 & rated 89 points: - Violet color with medium forming legs and aromas of cloves, dusty and bacon. It's balanced and has flavours of chocolate and blackberry with a medium/full body. Satin-Like texture with a medium finish. (2376 views)
Tasted by curtispomeroy on 5/9/2012 & rated 89 points: Really nice on day one. Developed some flavors on day two that wife described as "smoky" which lowered our enjoyment by a notch. (2230 views)
Tasted by RyanJames on 4/27/2012 & rated 90 points: Very sold stuff for the $. Black fruit on the nose and palate. Definitely new world, but has some gaminess/bacon-y/black pepper (lots of it actually...try this with black pepper Carr's crackers, the perfect pairing) action that makes it varietally correct. Very well balanced and it will be interesting to see what happens with these over the next 5 years. Delicious now, needed 2-3 hours to fully blossom and will probably come together even more over the next 2-3 years. I can't wait to try the single vineyard stuff. The versatility, balance, and terroir-driven style of wines by this producer have elevated them to my top 5 list in CA. (2181 views)
Tasted by Dave Dalluge on 3/29/2012 & rated 89 points: Followed over about three hours and didn't change much. Medium weight with good balance and nice texture. Showing plenty of black fruits but with some complexity on the nose and palate. Delightful. (2565 views)
Tasted by Bellissimo on 3/17/2012: Tasted on 2nd night of being opened. Continued to be impressed with this. Dark fruits, a little tartness, minerality all nicely balanced. Very nice QPR. (2385 views)

2007 Copain Syrah Tous Ensemble

* This is our first blended syrah consisting of fruit from Alder Springs, Eaglepoint Ranch, Hawks Butte and McDowell Valley vineyards. All the fruit was fermented with 30-50% wholecluster and barrel aged in 15% new french oak. The wine was lightly egg white fined and bottled unfiltered. Copain's appellation program is dedicated to producing top-quality wines which represent a blend from some of the best vineyards in the appellation. All of our vineyards are organically farmed. We produce our wines with the goal of being varietally correct, lower in alcohol and most importantly, food friendly.
* Tasting Notes: Great comlexity on the nose and palate with black currant, black rasberry, pepper, dark chocolate and subtle smokey notes that are all well intergrated. Medium bodied with well balanced flavors, supple chalky tannins, good structure and long finish. Ready to drink now, but another year in bottle will help meld the flavors even more. We suggest a brief decanting prior to serving. This Syrah should cellar quite nicely over the next five years.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
