2007 encore une fois.
Mauvais! (677 views)
Tasted by P&F on 3/17/2024 & rated 90 points: Typical left bank, good but nothing too special. We had a glass and opened something else. I've had better from a "lesser" wine in a good vintage. (538 views)
Tasted by Deyue on 8/22/2023 & rated 91 points: Drink on Chinese Valentine’s Day. Deep garbnet, bright rim, dark hue, a well preserved vintage bottle. Generous aromatic nose of blackberry and tobacco, as well as probably cedar and graphite scents (I am not quite sure about it). Medium-bodied palate shows fine-grained tannins and crips. Well-balanced and lengthy, not as intense as some other vintages, performing well enough in a non-outstanding vintage. (1634 views)
Tasted by ThMeyer on 7/22/2023 & rated 90 points: Needed some time in the decanter to open up (2h). Classic Bordeaux flavours appearing but also a slight hollow mid-palate - a hallmark of the vintage !? (1573 views)
Tasted by platpeeps on 7/6/2023 & rated 93 points: Cassis laden, smoke, spice & charcoal underpinned with some melting tannins to develop an intense hit of mocha and bitter chocolate. Sweetly fruited but a lovely dry tannic finish. Superb, and savoured every mouthful. 93 pts (1689 views)
Tasted by Oechsle on 12/26/2022 & rated 92 points: Nose dominated by Sous bois, Lift, hints of cassis, raw beef with neutral wood. Palate entry is impressive almost silky, Dry, Red fruited, salinity, Blood, strong underlying beam of acidity that’s not sharp but, showing a green edge. Salivating, Good Length. One of the last sub $100 futures releases from this chateau as they doubled than tripled pricing since April 2009. 08 is in a good place if you like your Bordeaux showing some resemblance of the grapes it was made from. I don’t see the acidity bowing out gracefully here while allowing other cast members to come forward in the future. If you’re squirreling these away and haven’t yet tried, you may want to start a’crackin to make your own assessment. Seemed to be at its best after 90 minutes. Purchased as futures and stored accordingly… Na zdrowie (2634 views)
Tasted by vanderpee on 3/2/2022 & rated 90 points: Still a solid wine, but not a long future ahead anymore. Day 1, PNP, I liked it best; dark fruit, integrated tannins and medium finish. Day 2 was less interesting. (3851 views)
Tasted by Pubu on 12/18/2021 & rated 90 points: decanted. still young, probably need a few more years. we like it. (3440 views)
Tasted by gordy240 on 10/3/2021 & rated 93 points: Decanted and started to open up after 1hr. In a fantastic place right now. Tannins well integrated, beautiful fruit on the nose and palate, made up of vanilla and dark berries. Well balanced with nice touch of earth and minerality. Exceptional value from an underrated vintage. If you like fruit and silky tannins, she’s good to go. For more leather and tertiary notes, hold another 4-5yrs and beyond. (3931 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 5/2/2021 & rated 92 points: Juicy dark and red berries, vanilla and bell pepper, good acidity and tannin. Showing the first signs of development. Next bottle in 2024. (4871 views)
Tasted by R Z on 4/9/2021 & rated 88 points: Dull, muted, lacking in fruit or vitality, closed, no nose, muddy maturing tannins, rioja notes, menthol. Cork was in perfect condition, murky appearance in the glass with color masked, some sediment. Decanted for an hour before trying, then drank over next three hours. Improved after 4 1/2 hours in the decanter. (3921 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 8/29/2020 & rated 92 points: Still young, but this was very pleasing. I particularly liked the nose on this, with its lovely sweet aromas of cassis, black cherries and plums, some loamy earth, then drifts of violets and fragrant tobacco spice. With time, a hint of something that smelt of koji floated up as well. A lovely, feminine bouquet. The palate was a bit tight at first, but opened up quite nicely over the next hour or so to show juicy gobs of cassis and plums, these seasoned with a little touch of spice, and then all ringed with a garland of violet florals. Not the most powerful Calon Segur, but there was enough depth here to be satisfying. Decent structure too, with pretty fine tannins and nice acidty framing the fresh flavours all the way into a pretty lengthy finish. Nice stuff, with its best years still a decade or so ahead of it. (4225 views)
Tasted by mrgarreth on 7/3/2020 & rated 92 points: A big, bold nose of ripe cherries, leather, and oak. Drinking alright, though it will benefit from at least another 5 or six years. Not much weight - it needs time - but a super mouthful of fruit and just-there tannins. (3766 views)
Tasted by tphilca on 7/3/2020 & rated 91 points: Very traditional profile, but more of a creamy texture than many. This has subtle fruit, a classic northern Medoc nose and a strong beam of acidity. This is more on the savory side with not a ton of fruit left. To my palate, it's in a good spot now and I'm not sure how much improvement remains. It goes great with food now and did not evolve much after several hours of air. (3404 views)
Tasted by wihong on 4/25/2020 & rated 90 points: Dark opaque purple with dark purple brown rim. Aroma of stewed fruit, jammy fig with anise undertone. Palate entry of savory preserved plum. Mid-palate with silky smooth tannin and intense licorice and preserved orange peel. Medium long finish of candied fruits and fully integrated oak. Aging along nicely with great acidity and backbone, tertiery flavor starting to come out with intense dried preserved plum. (4099 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 8/1/2019 & rated 92 points: Nicely balanced and very enjoyable, with a creamy texture, tart red fruit, some cedar and a nice acid backbone. Substantial upside from here. (6834 views)

2008- 91pts
2009- 93 pts

Tasted by Jeff Leve on 9/17/2018 & rated 90 points: Even though it is young, you can already sense the tobacco, cedar and wet forest secondary character. The wine is firm, austere and a bit stoic. This has concentration of flavor, as well as a wealth of tannin that needs perhaps 12-15 more years to soften before this is fun to drink. (6960 views)
Tasted by Jeongyahn on 9/9/2018: Black fruit, pepper, spices and oak
The taste is lighter than the nose.

Tasted by CarpeDiem! on 2/24/2018 & rated 89 points: Part of a vertical tasting (2012, 08, 06, 05, 03, 95). A bit hesitant in the nose, with hints of mature red berries, leather, liquorice, against a background of clay. Mineral, herbal attack in the mouth. Medium bodied, red fruit, liquorice, ink, and still much acidity. Clearly requiring 10+ years to melt towards a potentially pleasant wine. (8099 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 11/14/2017 & rated 92 points: Medium/full bodied with a spicy, peppery, cedar, cassis and tobacco character. Classic in nature, the finish is quite bright and fresh. This needs at least another decade in the cellar. (8734 views)
Tasted by JustinHandlin87 on 10/30/2017 & rated 93 points: I had this next to an 04 Jarvis Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve and the differences were just as expected. This wine showed more herbal, leather, dark mineral, and red fruit on the nose and palate. Also, this had plenty more acidity. I agree with others that it could use a good decant if drinking now, but probably better to hold a few more years. It evolved the entire time we had it open. (6789 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

St. Estèphe

Read more about St. Estephe and its wines Whereas the first activity recorded in Saint-Estèphe goes back as far as the Middle Bronze Age, the first vines date from the Roman Occupation. But it was the Bordeaux merchants who by aging and selling Saint-Estèphe wines themselves were largely responsible for this appellation's fame. And in the nineteenth century, noted for its prosperity, the great estates of today were created. The movement continues today with the merging of small estates.

A land of great wines, Saint-Estèphe is situated almost in the centre of the Médoc, close to the Gironde Estuary. The appellation is equidistant from Bordeaux and the Pointe de Grave.
The beds of soil are characterized by their remarkable diversity, the result of their undulating relief and excellent drainage. Quartz and well-rounded pebbles mingled with light, sandy surface soil are found everywhere, giving the wines a distinctive finesse. And the subsoil is made up of the famous Saint-Estèphe limestone, which outcrops on the west of the commune.

Tasting
Thanks to ideal conditions of climate and geology, Saint-Estèphe wines are characterized by their sturdy qualities and robust constitution. Accordingly, they can be laid down for a very long time while yet preserving their youth and freshness. Distinguished by a subsoil which is more clayey than that in the other communal appellations which lie by the river, the wine here attains a distinctive individuality : a very rich tannic structure, a fine deep red colour and an exceptional backbone with aromas of great finesse.

Production conditions (Decree dated September 11, 1936):

In order to have the right to the Saint-Estèphe appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the communes of Saint-Estèphe, "excluding any parcels in that area which are situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
