Tasted by GAET on 2/24/2024 & rated 93 points: 12.5%
Excellent (393 views)
Tasted by CarpeDiem! on 11/23/2023 & rated 90 points: Part of a 2020-1995 Verticale. Remarkable for a very challenging year. Silky and seducing, with port sweetness, tobacco, roast aromas and sweet spices. Some dilution in the finish shedding light on the difficult circumstances under which the wine was borne in a stormy year. (459 views)
Tasted by Cliffen80 on 8/5/2023 & rated 91 points: Very nice, perfect now (843 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 6/8/2023 & rated 90 points: The last of a 6 pack might be my favorite. Rosey garnet color. Typical Sociando nose that’s filled with black and red fruit, swamp and licorice. Bold and upfront. The palate is mature, slightly rustic and fun. A chunky Bordeaux without much finesse - but one that brings much pleasure. Not going to get any better. (90) (1121 views)
Tasted by Monvigliero on 5/21/2023 & rated 89 points: Clearly in its twilight years but nonetheless very pleasant. Showed a beautiful evolution in the decanter and drank very gracefully, albeit a bit past its peak. (1111 views)
Tasted by stayhappy21 on 1/17/2023 & rated 90 points: Brought this to Wah Lok (Carlton Hotel) for a wine dinner last night. Theme of the evening: wines from the Year of the Rabbit.

Decanted for 30 minutes before serving. A classic Bordeaux, aged for 24 years, delivers satisfaction and pleasure. Mature, with some complexity and ripe red fruits. Some cocoa, vanilla, and forest floor.

A wonderful wine. (1432 views)
Tasted by no leashes on 12/28/2022 & rated 90 points: drinking very nicely with a quick decant. (1224 views)
Tasted by CarpeDiem! on 11/19/2022 & rated 91 points: Twentysomething months after the last one I remain a fan. In an otherwise mediocre vintage SM did very well, offering a sensual blend of sweet mature fruit, subtle cask aromas, caramel, plum and liquorice, chocolate and some earthy notes, ending in a nice phenolic finish. But do drink up now! (1085 views)
(1430 views)
Tasted by Stefan75 on 1/6/2022 & rated 91 points: From Drag, in a very good window right now, some fruit left but all very nicely integrated, quite classic so definitely at or above expectations (1960 views)
Tasted by JChan on 12/31/2021 & rated 92 points: Still fresh with ripe black fruits, alcohol is still there. Not expect still energtic for such fully matured wine. Blackcurrant intermixed with vanilla, drinking quite silky and balance. Very juicy and delicious. (1655 views)
Tasted by JChan on 12/12/2021 & rated 93 points: Still very ripe dark fruits dominate, with coffee and cigar box and ripe dark fruits again. Long finish. Very good and delicious. (1666 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 11/22/2021 & rated 88 points: Solid, stern Bordeaux with a distinct mineral nature. Color is starting to turn ruby. The nose smells like a quarry - with some ripe plum and forest leaves mixed in. Masculine, firm and mature. Good but not exceptional depth. At peak. (88) (1691 views)
Tasted by Kyr on 4/17/2021 & rated 91 points: High inter-bottle variety - probably on the edge. I am going to consume all 1999 this year. (1986 views)
Tasted by Bernt Olav on 3/28/2021 & rated 92 points: Min andre flaske på en drøy uke. (1476 views)
Tasted by thebonnydooner on 10/13/2020 & rated 91 points: Not as great as the prior showing, but still nice earthy complete bordeaux. Good balance and complexity with a nice dark currant fruit profile. Went great with some steak. Would say drink up, but this was my last bottle. (1856 views)
Tasted by Kris G on 6/14/2020: A typical showing for Sociando-Mallet old style with lots of paprika from the Cabernet Sauvignon. Is going downhill. (2265 views)
Tasted by CarpeDiem! on 5/23/2020 & rated 91 points: Remarkably well kept 1999, a difficult year, but a real success for SM. Perhaps a bit less concentrated than in other years this bottle still boasts all Haut Médoc treats, filling your nose with subtle cask, caramel, plum and liquorice, adding chocolate, earthy notes in the mouth, finally yielding to a nice phenolic finish. But consider drinking up now. (2174 views)
Tasted by Anders Danielsen Lie on 5/1/2020 & rated 91 points: Frisk rød, sjenerøs og presis duft av cabernetfrukt, kaffe, seder, tobakk/sigar, blyant/leire, jordlige mineraltoner. Nydelig balanse hele veien, modne tanniner. Presence og nyanse. Ortodoks. 55 CS, 40 merlot, 5 CF. Mye vin og adresse for pengene (2066 views)
Tasted by Sheila62 on 3/28/2020: very good claret (2058 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 1/8/2020 & rated 89 points: A friendly and charming vintage of Sociando. All the hallmarks that you'd expect with pronounced bell pepper and leafy notes in a slightly softer and less robust package. Yet its no slouch -- good fruit with nice juicy acidity. Tannins are just about fully resolved. (2197 views)
Tasted by becassine on 4/11/2019: So powerfully smelly!
So intense that the nose scene corked
To be open absolutely two hour before drinking
Will they taste it again tomorrow (2619 views)
 Tasted by millesime66 on 3/15/2019 & rated 91 points: Idem à la dernière bue il y a exactement 1 an. (2581 views)
Tasted by thebonnydooner on 1/2/2019 & rated 93 points: Lovely wine. Bought en primeur and well worth the 17+ year wait! Nicely intense and powerful. Retains a nice core of currant, plum and cherry fruit. Notes of earth and leather as well as tobacco. Complex, mature yet fresh enough with nice acidity, mature soft tannins and a long tasty sweet finish. Overall this is a gorgeous mature Bordeaux that punches well above its weight. For a 1999 this is excellent. (2704 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 8/5/2018 & rated 91 points: A fine vintage of Sociando where you get all of the classic flavors and in a more moderately concentrated package. Great herb and bell pepper notes throughout. Has very good, sweet fruit with just a little less richness/concentration than you get in the warmer years. (3567 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Haut-Médoc

Read more about Haut Medoc and its wines Long-standing fame The legally created division into Médoc and Haut-Médoc dates from 1935. But as long ago as 1815 a Chartrons broker, whose word carried weight, spoke of great red wines in the Haut-Médoc, so recognizing the high quality successfully achieved by this region's growers in the eighteenth century. The same Bordeaux broker revealed that the business world of the Chartrons and the great Bordeaux proprietors had established a sort of league-table of the parishes in which the vine-growing communes of today's Haut-Médoc appellation showed up well.

The Haut-Médoc appellation stretches over some thirty seven miles from north to south, from Saint-Seurin de Cadourne to Blanquefort. Within this area, certain zones produce wines exclusively with the Haut-Médoc appellation. It has terroirs of remarkable quality. And although we may note a certain predominance of layers of gravel (essentially Garonne gravel) from the Quaternary, all these sites are characterized by their wide diversity. Today in the southernmost communes of the appellation, the suburbs of Bordeaux, numerous vineyards which existed at the beginning of the twentieth century have disappeared, victims of urban expansion. But the vines live on... because man has retained his devotion to them.

The astonishing variety of different terroirs, the result of the very extent of the area, explains the diversity of Haut-Médoc wines, a fact which is rare within one and the same appellation.
But, over and above the differences, linked to this mosaic of climatic and geological influence, all these wines have the same family traits of character.
Alert and lively, full-bodied without being too powerful, and harmoniously balanced, they acquire a rare bouquet over the years.

In order to have the right to the Haut-Médoc appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the communes of Blanquefort, Le Taillan, Parempuyre, Le Pian, Ludon, Macau, Arsac, Labarde, Cantenac, Margaux, Avensan, Castelnau, Soussans, Arcins, Moulis, Listrac, Lamarque, Cussac, Saint-Laurent de Médoc, Saint-Julien, Pauillac, Saint-Sauveur, Cissac, Saint-Estèphe, Vertheuil, Saint-Seurin de Cadourne "excluding all the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (48 hectolitres per hectare).
