Tasted by Chamwine on 11/30/2012 & rated 90 points: Rich but not overpowering. Probably too much for appetitive. Rounded bouquet. Very satisfying (4132 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 9/27/2012 & rated 89 points: 29th Birthday Chateauneuf du Pape Tasting (Weygandt Wines - Washington, D.C.): I picked this white Chateauneuf to start of what would inevitably be a red wine-dominated tasting. It’s a blend of 40% grenache blanc and 20% each of roussanne, clairette and bourboulenc. On the nose: white flowers, papaya, hint of cotton candy, apricot blossom. Palate: fresh acid leads to a nutty, white peach and toasted nut palate with lemon zest and honey on the finish. Very acidic for a CdP, and Val said it was too much acid for her. For me, I was excited to see such a complex CdP blanc have so much fresh acid. Even better after five hours being open. (5143 views)
Tasted by nigelb on 11/15/2011 & rated 89 points: Improved on third day and served in chardonnay glass. Full bodied and rich texture. (4553 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 2/4/2011 & rated 91 points: Old Châteauneuf-du-Papes tasted with Harry Karis (750 Wines, St. Helena, California): Light medium lemon yellow color; ripe grapefruit, lanolin, ripe lemon, pineapple nose; tasty, tart lemon, lanolin, mineral palate with good balance; medium-plus finish (2466 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 9/28/2010: Light yellow. Beautiful rich nose of lemon, apple cocconut and rich fruit flavours and a perfect dry finish. This and the 09 were our favorite whites of the trip. We were lucky enough to meet Monsieur Raymond at the tasting room and loved him and his wines. (4719 views)
Tasted by last chance on 7/31/2010 & rated 89 points: Châteauneuf-du-Pape tasting: The nose had green apple and lemon/lime aromas. The palate had some tart stone fruit flavors with grapefruit coming out near the finish. Nice acidity though. Showed much better than the Vieux Telegraph Blanc we tasted this next to. (5501 views)

Raymond, not to be confused with Pierre, Usseglio lives on the edge of the village of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, on the road to Courthezon. Half his vines are situated near that road in the lieu-dit "La Crau" and the other half on the hill across the road from the actual ruins of the new castle of the Pope (Chateauneuf du Pape). He has the good fortune to have very old vines. The average age for his Chateauneuf vines is between 50 and 60 years old, and the Cuvee Imperiale is 100-year old vines. My principal selection from his various cuvees bears the name Girard, and was bottled for us without any filtration. Grenache comprises about 70% of the blend, Mourvedre most of the balance, with Syrah and a field blend of old vines, the remainder. Raymond’s son, Stephane, is now joining him and their already excellent wines appear to be getting even greater. Stephane also vinifies for us a small amount of Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc in barrique, and we are now taking all of the Roussanne pur that he can vinify for us. This is a domaine to watch.

White Rhone Blend

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
